Favorite cold weather foods

The weekend is forecast to be warm enough to work in my garden but it is in the 30s now so I'm indoors. I'm considering Frito pie for dinner. Here is a list of cold weather dinner favorites:

Chili
Frito Pie
Chicken pot pie, the kind with a biscuit crust
Beans made with sliced sausage and hot peppers
Lasagna
Pizza
Barbecued ribs

Graywings--yes, the $45 one is exactly the one I have. it's not 'vintage'--I bought it new about 20 years ago--at an outlet center. For FIVE $$$$. No, not afraid of it leaking. It seals well. I did have the gasket replaced on it a few years ago, to be on the safe side, but as I said, I've been using it for decades with no problem. I usually use mine when I'm sitting doing something like reading, watching TV. Don't take it to bed with me. We've got apillow top mattress--those things are like furnaces, once I'm in bed, I'm generally too warm no matter what the temp.

I've gotten some really good ideas from everyone who contributed to this thread, so thank you! I will add for anyone still reading a few that we have had recently that absolutely hit the spot during our cold, Pittsburgh winter. Beef stew (obviously everyone already knows about this one!). I finally found a recipe I really like and I think I've made it three times since the weather turned cold in November. Will likely make it again in a week or two. Old fashioned beef and noodles - I found an excellent recipe on a blog called The Spiced Life. This might be my favorite winter meal. Chicken Noodle Soup - I love it but never had a recipe I like. On another forum online I found a nice recipe that uses turmeric which I think is what my other recipes were missing. The only problem with this soup is that it feels more like a lunch or a side dish - my husband doesn't consider it a "dinner." haha. Chicken Paprikash - the New York Times recipe is out of this world. We like it with buttered egg noodles. Pasta with Bolognese. In the summer, I do a lot of lighter, quick sauces especially when our garden tomatoes are fresh. In the winter, we like that long simmering, thick, rich, red sauce.

No one has been rude and I am truly sorry you feel that way, Lynn. Presenting different information and letting readers see different facets is helpful in developing an understanding, especially when it relates to health issues. We appreciate your help. Surely that does not mean than we cannot bring up other information that might be of value even if it differs from information you have presented?? It seems to me that participatory health, where people have conversations with their health professionals and are encouraged to learn about themselves and whatever medical conditions they may have is a more positive environment than the olden days when the doctor's word was gospel and no one disagreed or asked questions. Teamwork in no way decreases the value of medical professionals, on the contrary, I suspect it may save lives. Doctors make mistakes. Patients mis-comprehend. Without a healthy exchange of information, either of those can result in needless loss of life/good health.

It was wet and cold most of today. Turkey stone soup time. Turkey bones, and scraps, leftover gravy, couple pieces of ham, 2 huge carrots, celery with tops, big onion put whole into pot, salt and pepper. Simmered and skimmed - all the foamy stuff is removed - so it was clear after 4 hours. All parts and pieces of turkey and other meats are strained before serving. Wantons made with cooked meat from freezer, cabbage, green onions, eggs, chopped and folded into wanton skins from market. Soup was dark, clear and delicious. Extra wantons were coated with some Pam spray and baked in 425 degree oven till brown and crunchy and served with dipping sauce, catsup, soy sauce, other Asian flavors and severed at room temp with hot wantons. It is about 36 degrees here tonight. Fiddly dinner but worth every minute.

At least once per week I make some type of soup during the winter

and every once in a while I splurge and buy bell peppers and make stuffed peppers. (I know that's a summer-fresh from the garden recipe, but it's soooooo good!)

I love to make soups, something we have a couple or more times a week for lunch and/or supper.

Braised pot roast, cooked with lots of veggies.

Roast chicken.

Homemade veggie & beef soup, pinto beans & cornbread, and curry over rice. Which my daughter's friends were craving the other day...so they are coming this evening for curry. ( :

In Santa Fe, cold weather has nothing to do with it!

I agree with most of the foods listed, except chili or anything remotely spicy....even a little spicy...even with black pepper.
