How to get rid of new-carpet smell???
Comments (22)We bought an area rug made by Safavieh and it has a STRONG chemical smell to it, very much like floor paste wax. I discovered that the chemical toulene, used in some paste waxes, is also used in the latex that backs some rugs. We tried baking soda, no result. We ordered a product that's supposed to remove such odors, nothing happened. We had to get rid of the rug, couldn't return it because we had "treated" it! Please note that other rugs that we have from Safavieh do NOT have this problem. Some houseplants DO remove odors from the air by the way, but they don't neutralize them at the source. A bad rug will continue to off gas, even if houseplants keep the smell down. Toulene (banned in Cal.) has lots of lousy side effects when inhaled. A real shame that the latex backing used on affordable rugs can't be made without horrible smelling chemicals by now, in the 21st century....See MoreHow do you get rid of polyurethane smell?
Comments (53)I'm sorry, I have not had a chance to get any charcoal. The smell is still there. Not as strong as it was a few weeks ago and after a month it is tolerable, but everyone who comes into my new room asks "what is that smell?" This is INSANE how much worse the smell is after this supposed VOC compliant crap. There is no way in hell this is better for you. for the first 3 weeks I could not even stand being in the room as I would get a headache after breathing this in for 20 minutes. I loved the old smell of the old stuff and it would be gone within a week. This smell is going on over a month and It is still lingering. I think we need to find another brand or get everyone to complain to these varnish companies to bring back the old formulas. Why did they even change it? How in the heck did they ever test this and Say "Yeah this is better!! You would have to have absolutely no sense of smell to think this stuff is good for anyone to breath or use. Do they really think by changing the smell or recipe of varnish we are saving the planet? It is ridiculous!! I'm so sorry I wish I had the answer for you. I just left my windows open a crack for days until it was tolerable. Also you could use a damp rid bag and hope that will absorb some of the smell. It is strong at first but I know at least these hanging bags smell better than the varnish!! You can get these at Lowes or HomeDepot in the cleaning isle....See MoreHow to get rid of 'old' wood smell?
Comments (21)I tried everything on the antique dresser that I bought on CL for my daughter's room. Charcoal, exposure on sunny days, newspaper, candles, dryer sheets, OdorRid products, bowls of baking soda, TSP, even scrubbing with a bleach/water mixture (it also had some water damage and mildew). It helped somewhat but didn't really get rid of the old wood smell. Painting the back and outside of the dresser and lining the drawers with contact paper helped somewhat. Using scented drawer liners also work well but now my DD's clothes smell like perfume and I'm sensitive to that so not the best solution. I'm definitely going to try sealing the inside with spray poly. If that works then I'll get rid of the scented drawer liners....See MoreHow to get rid of or cover up kitty urine smell
Comments (13)How would you put a carpet into a freezer? I am so slap happy to not have any captive animals in my house anymore. I had always had cats. Most often they were indoor/outdoor but I did keep a box for them because I always tried to make sure that they were inside at night and of course in cold weather. I loved my cats but am overjoyed at not having to deal with that anymore. One place that one of my cats took to using still smelled for years after she was gone and I will bet, if you put your nose to that area, you might still catch a whiff. When I was growing up I never heard of keeping a cat inside. As a middle aged adult I came to live in a community where the complete opposite was true. I never liked having a caged or house bound animal and will never do that again. Can you imagine living your entire life in the house? Even for a cat that sounds soul crushing. Visited with some old friends over the weekend. They always had cats, no kids. They currently. have 7 cats in the house. They used to keep all of their cats inside and I was surprised to see that they are actually letting them come and go in and out. They have a very small old fashioned town house and there were cats coming out of very corner. I have always loved the company of cats but husband dislikes them being in his space. It is a legacy of his early upbringing and not rooted in any real logic, I think. I loved my cats, but want no more, ever....See Moreheather_on
