When it comes to planting do you follow the almanac?
I do, today is a good day to plant root crops here. Tilled the garden yesterday so it is ready. I will cut potatoes today and let them set in ashes until Tuesday and then put them in the ground. My onions will go in this evening or tomorrow. My neighbors are more than a week ahead of me, they have onions and potatoes in, they do not follow the almanac.

I don't follow the Farmers Almanac, but I do adhere to an old adage "Plant after the Three Saints days in May). I usually start seeds indoors in late March or April and dig outside in May.

No, I don't. In my area, we know there will be no more cold weather when the Pecan trees start to leaf out - middle of March.

Drew...last year was not one of the coldest winters ever. It was cold here in our zone, sure. The Almanac was likely referring to our area perhaps...as you say, but you must understand climatologists are speaking in terms of global temperature, and in that regard it did indeed rise. The USA makes up I think around 3% of the Earth's surface, so when you consider the entire northeast for example it is such a small slice of the total picture as to be nearly neglible. Don't get me wrong, I understand the power of political interest and self interest. If you really look at it there is far more interest monetarily speaking in refuting climate science than embracing it. As far as making stuff up...well...yes, you can make that stuff up.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. There's a guy on another gardening forum who's been saying for the past 3 years that a very cold winter was coming. Even though the 2 before this were incredibly mild (at least in the mid-Atlantic and south) is he now correct in saying "I told you so?" That being, I think this could be G-d's punishment for the folly of playing the superbowl in the Meadowlands.* BTW I have a huge prediction: one team will win! * one of the the world's great ironic placenames. 7thLegend, expecting 60 degrees and sunny here for the Superbowl. LOL! Not as cold in February as it used to be though. We will see. Don't place much belief in the Farmer's Almanac. Do they ever predict anything but cold and snowy for the Northeast in February?! As for the hurricane forecast, this certainly has been a very, very strange season! Was expected to very bad, but abnormally quiet! Probably one of he strangest seasons I can remember. Don't know what to make of it.--May be a very late season. Like X-Mas storms?! We had ours late last year--October 31st, name of Sandy.

Too late in Southern California? Not at all. Here is a vegetable planting calendar from the old farmer's almanac. I followed the recommendation and planted beans, cucumbers and tomatoes in October. No, but I remember reading 3 weather forecasts for this winter's weather, with the Almanac forecasting a very bad winter. I have since decided that the Almanac can be trusted more often than not.

When I went to drop some kitchen waste on the garden the other day ...

... the snow was almost at the tops of my high overshoes.

Didn't ask the ground whether it was ready to be worked: snow's an excellent insulator, they say, so probably it wouldn't have heard me, if I had.
