Our movie group went to see it today. It was a delightful little movie. A much needed change after seeing the intense American Sniper last week. Everybody smiling and chatting as we exited. Last week, at the end of American Sniper, with an audience ten times larger than today, you could hear a pin drop as people exited the theater.

Paddington looks like a good diverson. It has really great reviews.

I hear Bradley Cooper gives the performance of a lifetime. And that American Sniper is fantastic. Rotten Tomatoes only gives it a 73% though (critics. Audience is at 88%). What did you think?

The movie is certainly not one you would say you "enjoyed" but it was fabulous! It shows war for exactly what it is. Certainly does not glorify it. It shows how it affects everyone involved, including the families that give up so much, too. I think it should be required viewing. It's the very least we can do for our many heroes. JMO

An update: the sun is shining but it already feels like Autumn and the water levels have gone down leaving many homes with layers of sludge and a terrible smell. Many of the shopping and tourist area have been badly hit as, without a water supply pubs, bars, cafes and shops had to remain closed. Even our mobile library had not been able to pick up its supply of 'new' books from the city HQ. We hear that water is now more or less reconnected everywhere but it is still not suitable for drinking or cooking . . . only washing and flushing. Farmers, both arable and dairy are not happy as much of their harvest has rotted and even in this area where the fields look green and healthy, underfoot is still a quagmire and far too wet for tractors, harvesters and so on to get onto the ground without damaging the soil. I didn't know until I heard it on the BBC that there is never any insurance cover for crops . . . only the hardware . . . machinery, tools, vehicles, buildings, houses and their contents. Btw we have seen the terrible pictures on TV of the bridge-collapse over the Mississippi. Does this mean that all other bridges of similar design must be checked?

Paint, sheen, ceiling questions--must decide today

I used Aura Bath & Spa paint in both my bathrooms. I really love it. It's matte and I find the finish to appear very velvety and rich. Holds up to scrubbing well and TOUCHES UP beautifully if you ever need to. I have red in one bath and navy in another. A friend used the same color red in her bathroom, in a different paint and sheen and I don't care for it at all. The sheen really can make a difference. I previously had satin (Ace Royal brand) and didn't like the sheen. The Aura Bath paint covered fully in one coat, but I still used two. I've used Regal also in the past, but not their kitchen and bath. I'm sure you'll be fine with any of their paints. I'll continue to buy the Aura Bath paint for our bathrooms. I don't have experience with any of their other paints so it might be good to contact them. I wouldn't want anything higher than eggshell for the kitchen, but that's just my visual preference. Because of the cost of the Aura, I wouldn't use it for larger areas. I believe it would hold up well though. Did you ever see the Aura matte finish? I haven't seen their satin so I don't know if I'd use their Kitchen paint or not. I'd go with that or Regal over the Aura for a kitchen.

CindyMac, I have to retract my favorable comments re: Handmaids Tale as we just finished watching the 2nd season. Without giving anything away, some character's took a bizarre explicable turn which cheapened the story. And it was torture porn without any emotional relief. To lighten up, we are watching THE QUEER EYE on Netflix. Although some of the antics are a bit MUCH, the transformations are enjoyable.

I appreciate the answer. Sounds like it'll be hard for me to see. I grew up with a father who was a career officer from the early 60s until the 80s (including during the Viet Nam War, yes, he was overseas). I know what we sacrificed, but to see what he went through, I don't know that I can do that. He told me once that he heard a bullet whiz past his ear. He quit smoking that day. It has to be really hard being someone who serves with your family far away and facing death every moment. My heart goes out to them all!
