We've been buying 4# sacks of sugar for years now, maybe 6 or 8. Certain brands still make their sacks 5#, but not all of them.

And you can't just assume that the bigger bags, like the 10# or 25# ones are better deals, they aren't always. I ended up standing in that aisle doing a lot of figuring during hummingbird season.

Yes, the 4 pound sacks have been in my supermarkets for several years now. You have to be very careful to make sure you get the 5# bags, since the 4# bags are obviously cheaper--but NOT usually 25% cheaper--than the 5# ones.

Yes, 4 lbs of sugar is the norm now. I don't understand that. Obviously companies know that we will continue to buy however much sugar we want, so why not raise the price to whatever it takes. I doubt they are selling any more or less sugar. I wonder how much it costs a company to retool the machines and packages? Sugar is one thing that I am brand loyal to, I only buy Dominos Pure Cane sugar.

So many things now are packaged so that we get less and pay more for it.

If priced at the same amount per pound, a 4 pound bag would be 20% less than a 5 pound bag. Not 25%.

25% works for the other direction - at the same amount per pound, 5 pounds costs 25% more than 4 pounds.

Been getting 4# for years. A half-gallon of ice cream is now 54 oz. Soft drinks are still trying to slip in the handy 20 pack (not 24).

Dominos is in a 10# bag at BJ's. I bought it for the holiday. I don't remember what I paid, but it seemed like a good deal. I hate smaller packages-it runs out too quick and they usually keep the price the same.

4lb bags have been here for many years too. At this point we only have two supermarkets, pretty much the basics.

Bought a 5 pound Wegman's bag of sugar in December. It doesn't all fit in the 4 pound reuseable container that I have from Dominos.

We generally have but two choices here, C&H and the store brand for whichever store I am at that week, Safeway or Top Foods. Just two major groceries and one family owned store in this smaller town...But all are in 4 pound bags for quite some time now.

I don't serve desserts unless having company or doing holiday baking, but DH's hummingbird buddies consume 6 cups a month year round - the annas overwinter here the last several years, don't leave us to migrate ;)

We have both four and five pound bags. I have been buying the 25 pound bag at Sam's.

IF it turns out to be cheaper per pound ...

... buy a 25 pound bag - split with four friends.

Or ... if you prefer the 4 lbs. per ... five friends ...

... and you keep the extra pound as commission.

Don't know where you'd put that pound, though.

We buy sugar mainly for the humming birds,as we use very little for anything else around here,and it's been in 4# sacks for years.

Everything is shrinking. Even my favorite Skechers tennis shoes that I've been buying the style for years...the last pair I bought from Shoebuy (where I normally buy them) had been chopped down in size, they decided they could still make a shoe but cut the tongue and top off a little bit to save on leather...WRONG, they now SUCK! My last pair had 5 eyelets and the new ones only have four, they feel like they are falling off my foot. So much for my favorite shoe...boohoo!

Yes, sugar is very hard to find in a 5# bag.

I'm so frustrated at having most everything 'cut down' or ortherwise inferior. I have bought Kleenex tissues all my life, and my mother did the same; the last time I bought that brand a year or so ago, the whole bunch shifted around in the deceptively "large" box and each piece was so thin as to be useless. I won't use three pieces to blow my nose! I found the stuff at Target to be better, so that's what I buy now. It's the attempted deception, more than anything, that bugs me.

We still have both 4 and 5 lb. bags. I look for the 5 lb. It fills my canister just to the top!

Here's another shrinking item. Kraft caramels. I needed some for a recipe I'm making when my DGD comes to visit. They didn't have any at Publix or WD so while I was in Wal-Mart I found them. The bag didn't look very big so I bought two. Good thing. That 14 oz. bag is now only 11 oz.

Many things on the grocery shelves *look* the same, but the contents have shrunk. The box of Archway windmill cookies is the same size and price, but there are eight cookies inside, not ten -- or maybe it was twelve! Sure enough, it's just 8 oz.

I seldom buy sugar, but I have a four-pound bag on the shelf. It takes a long time to use up with only one teaspoon a day (cup of tea). DH prefers artificial sweetener, which I hate.

I don't know if it's age or what, but many foods are too sweet or too salty for me. We just had some Triscuits that tasted *sweet* on my tongue; no sugar listed, but I bet artificial sweetener was somewhere in the long list of chemical ingredients.
