Seems like I'm the only one who can detect a difference, both in taste and texture. I much prefer cream cheese in recipes where the flavor and richness really count, but have used the Neufchatel plenty of times where other ingredients take over. It's good with fruity things, I think. I make a pineapple, curry, walnut spread, and the Neufchatel works really well with that....it's softer.
I don't like the results when used to make a crust for little tarts, etc.
"Eu" is a common vowel combination in French, as in pneu=tire which is p'nuh with a slight nasal sound, not p'noo. What in English rhymes with "new" is the combination in French "ou".
For those looking for a silent F, try Neuchatel in Switzerland. That town is pronounced with the same vowel sound, just lacking the F.
I read, speak and write French very well and used to live nearby but I'm happy for y'all to be happy and wrong.
Edit - Ps, I prefer cream cheese though it's quite high in fat and calories. I eat it sparingly
