Who investigates a delayed package? The sender?

I bought a used lens from a private seller on Amazon. It was shipped on Tuesday last week and estimated to arrive on Friday, but didn't. Nor did it show up on Saturday or today.

Tracking info said it left the last stop before my Post Office on Friday at 5:00 a.m. That's the last record they have of it. The USPS still states the estimated delivery date is January 23. That makes no sense, but Amazon makes even less sense: They changed the estimated delivery date to February 10!

I talked to my Postmaster this morning. She didn't sound interested in looking into the shipment. I'll try again tomorrow, but maybe it's possible the sender has to be the one to investigate. I don't know if he insured it or not. Priority Mail includes automatic insurance, but I think it has a $100 limit.

I hope he packed it well. I envision it getting banged around the state. :-(

I'd contact Amazon -- there was a reason they changed your estimated delivery date.

Now they've changed it again, estimating delivery between January 26 and February 10. I have the feeling they may think the weather is interfering with mail delivery. But that hasn't been the case in this area. One of my other orders has been delayed due to weather conditions out west.

I'll initiate a phone conversation with Amazon tomorrow, although it's hard to imagine they know about a USPS-tracked package than the USPS does. Still, I could be wrong, and at the very least it'll be another piece of information.

If the package left the distribution facility at 5:00 a.m., which I assume it did, it should have reached my PO later that day. It's possible it got there, but was never scanned in. Well, I'll see what I can find out tomorrow.

ABCGIRL It's okay. I was just worried that I hadnt heard from you. I have an update but its not much of one! According to usps.com the package has not been received. Here is what the website says: You entered 0103 8555 7494 0595 0839 The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper or shipping partner on May 12, 2005 to expect your package for mailing. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later. Not sure why it is taking this long to get the package to abitodd. If she doesnt get it soon I guess I will mail the original robin out to her. Not sure what else to do. Sheena

Berniek is right: Much of the blame here falls upon the shoulders of the politicians (led by then-President Clinton), who forced banks to begin some rather foolish lending practices. Alan Greenspan certainly did his share to push this concept of "everyone can borrow" during his time as Fed chairman. Between creative financing, no money down offers, and other such options, the government has given people plenty of rope with which to hang themselves. We Americans haven't proven ourselves to be particularly strong in the moderation and self-discipline categories over the last 30-40 years. Also, remember the climate that existed in the 90s, when I bought my first house: Spurred on by the soaring housing prices, people were convinced that buying "as much house as you can afford" was a good move. Housing was considered an investment that couldn't fail. Yes, the experts began preaching about "the housing bubble" long before it hit, but the masses couldn't grasp how this sure-thing could ever fall. And there's always been a (faulty) basic belief that "If I couldn't afford it, the bank wouldn't lend it to me." I fully agree with those who say that Real Estate agents will push buyers to their upper limits and beyond, and banks will lend what they can -- it's all about profits for them. Yet, the home owner DOES also bear the brunt of personal responsibility. After all, who cares most about whether I can afford my mortgage -- and still buy groceries and other things I need? Clearly, it's ME! I reap the rewards or punishments of my decisions, so I should do the math and know whether I can comfortably afford a house (or anything else) before I buy it. However, we've sort of left that thinking behind in today's buy-now-pay-later society. We're constantly told that "we deserve" this or that thing. That if we're going to finance it, we deserve to have exactly what we want. That "everyone" has debt. We've got to get past that.

1. The idea that competitive bidding a set of plans will save you money assumes you're able to play the game better than much more experienced players. Not likely. Architects will try to convince you that their many-splendored set of plans will safeguard against any overage, but once you've signed a contract, you're at the mercy of the contractor for inevitable changes as well as dealing with errors and omissions on the part of your architect. Yes, architects, like builders, are human. Both make mistakes. 2. There is no such thing as a "perfect" set of plans--at least not without infinite cost. Know that you won't be able to do the elusive "apples-to-apples" comparison. 3. Your architect doesn't purchase construction materials or trade labor as part of their day job. Don't look to them as the authority on what a home will cost to build, particularly in an environment of rapidly escalating costs. 4. No you don't have to go over your budget and you don't need a 20% contingency. You just need to align your expectations with your builder's and choose a builder who does a thorough job investigating the site and estimating. A good set of plans and specs goes a long way toward this end, but refer to nos. 1 ,2, and 3 above. Get your builder on board during the design phase. 5. The m.o. of many builders is to tell you what you want to hear--including the price you have in mind for your project. They'll make the necessary margin to stay in business by a combination of less supervision on your project, lower quality materials, lower quality trade contractors and not servicing your legitimate warranty items. Hey, who doesn't love a surprise? 6. There are professionals whose word is their bond, who value their clients and who take pride in their work. Their "brand" matters. They won't cheat you or do something less than their personal best. You just aren't likely to attract one of them by competitive bidding them against a pool of builders much lower down the contractor food chain. Explore alternatives to competitive bidding to get the kind of contractor you want. 7. HGTV is not a good resource; their shows should be aired on the Disney channel. 8. Consider that you're not the right fit for every builder. Be willing to at least entertain the notion that you may even be the "client from hell." 9. This entry has been intentionally left blank. 10. You don't need to be a subject matter expert in any/all aspects of residential construction. That's what you hire your builder for. Choosing wisely enables you to focus on your day job while you build a home.

Window Genius' comment to Angel18432 Nothing Angel18432 said was any hint at extortion. I think what happened to the original poster falls under consumer protection. By giving a deposit you are in a contract to exchange goods/services for money in a reasonable time frame. Forgetting to place an order for 7 months- which is questionable - is not a reasonable timeframe that they had the OP's money without an agreed upon explanation and extension. She said "I would have the windows installed and then try to negotiate a price reduction" Nothing wrong with that asking for a discount or something after they are installed. "and don't pay them any more $$ till the job is complete to your satisfaction." Oh that is a given. Nothing more to be paid till after the windows are installed and I would even hold back 10% of the balance. Here in Ontario Canada it is called the Ontario Construction Act and NORMAL BUSINESS PRACTICE. OP You may have something similar in your area.

If you have not registered online with the USPS, it does not take a lot of time to do so. Once done, you can avoid the legwork or trying to contact either the seller or your local post office by initiating a claim online. The claims process forces cooperation without any additional effort on your part because it is a timed process and ends up with a payout to you if the package isn't found and delivered.

Alisande, I have the same thing going on here with the USPS tracking. My package is also from Amazon. I had no results when I contacted the post office yesterday either. My delivery dates were changed yesterday, to between Monday the 26th, and Thursday the 29th. It should have been here last Friday. This is not the first time, I have had the same problem with USPS and their tracking either. In my case, they didnt change the tracking on the website until after my mail had already been delivered, so I am hoping it will come today,

I had something similar happen although I could see it on tracking - pkg got to within one stop of my post office and went off in a different direction - took about 4 days for it to make it's way back to my PO. I think it was from Amazon also. I miss the days when they shipped straight UPS and didn't involve the PO at all. On the other hand over Christmas, I had pkgs turn up within 36 hours of being ordered. Makes no sense.

ah -- I'll bet it is due to the storm in the NE. Roads have been closed and I'm sure many flights had to be canceled.

We didn't have any bad weather last week, so I can't blame a storm.

But good news--the package arrived today. I hope Cat_ky can report the same thing. The not-so-good news is that the lens was banging around in the box, totally unprotected. It was the worst packing job I've ever seen. The cap on the back of the lens--which screws on--was separated from the lens.

Not only do I wonder about any damage to the inside of the lens, but I wonder about the seller's description of the lens. S/he said the lens was in excellent condition, lightly used, but anyone who knows anything about cameras would never have packed a lens that way.

sigh. I've experienced a few problems due to poor packaging at Amazon lately, but never through a private seller. Good luck with this!

I had this problem at Christmas.....it sat 4 days in our local post office before they delivered it....only a few blocks.....UGH!

Yes, my package did arrive today. In fact, since it was an crewel picture project, I have already started it. Thanks for asking. I am sorry yours wasnt packed well. I hope all is ok with it, once you try it out.

I returned the lens this morning. The seller was very nice about it, and agreed to give me a full refund, including my shipping cost. I hope when she sees how I packed it she'll use similar protection when shipping her next fragile item.
