My Poor Friend

My friend Pat was looking forward to five days in Florida visiting a good friend of hers. When she called the airlines, her flight was on schedule so she left for the airport at 10:30 last nightÃ¯Â¿Â½..her flight was at 6:30 this morning. However, this morning all flights were canceled. She's back home, trip cancelled. Another victim of the ice and snow. At least she wasn't stranded on an Atlanta or Birmingham highway for 15 hours.

It's always good to find something to be thankful for! So sorry she missed her trip, tho.

Gosh, how far did she have to drive that she left home at 10:30 p.m. for a flight departing at 6:30 a.m.? Sorry she was so inconvenienced. Does this mean she's not going at all?

I was afraid we wouldn't get out of O'Hare for Dallas on New Year's Day. We asked the airline to call us four hours before scheduled departure to confirm it was going, and they did. It boarded on time, but we were delayed for de-icing Then we sat on the runway so long awaiting takeoff I was afraid we'd have to go back the the gate for another treatment. We made up the time and were able to board our connecting flight to Maui with *at least* five minutes to spare. Whew.

Holly is massively tough, Kier. I had one blown right over in a gale a few years ago. It was propped up in a corner out of the ground for at least two months then stuck back in and trimmed to a lollipop shape. No problem. It is thriving. Just give it plenty of water if you get a drought in the next couple of months and trim it as much as you like. I have another one which has a trunk about 6 inches diameter. It was way too big so I just cut it straight off at about 4 feet and now it is also a lollipop. Sounds horrendous, I know, but this is in a tiny semi-formal back garden where a twenty foot holly that didn't even get berries was a waste of space and source of gloom.

jonmcdade ... African violets only properly grow from the top center (crown) of the plant. As leaves are broken off ... or fade and die, they will leave a neck at the base of your plant ... which is just starting for you. Usually, repotting the plant, after having scraped the neck, so that the soil covers the neck, will solve this issue. As long you have a healthy crown, the plant can grow. The white fuzz on the neck does look like mealy bug. If you don't remove all traces of the mealy bugs from your plant (which can be difficult) ... your plant will eventually be overwhelmed and will die. Hopefully you've isolated this plant from your other (2). I would suggest that you carefully discard this plant (so as not to spread the mealybug) ... and find yourself a new healthy plant. I'd suggest that you NOT buy any more plants at the usual retail outlets (which spread pests to their plants through sloppy handling), but rather buy directly from AV growers. AV growers do a much better job of keeping their plants free from AV pests, which can wipe out your collection. A few years back I decided that I would rather spend my time enjoying the beauty of my plants, rather than spending my time battling AV pests. You should be able to find a violet with similar blooms by browsing the literally hundreds of offerings at www.lyndonlyon.com or www.bloomlovers.com. I've ordered plants (you can get plugs from Bloomlovers) from both vendors and have never received a diseased plant from either of them. The photograph is of Ozio from Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses ... Thanks Kristi! I was so excited to buy my Amaryllis bulb and was so worried today when it turned red. I actually dug it back up and put it in a pot to keep inside just to keep it safe. =) I am from South Carolina...I think a zone 7. Where are you living? My mom gave me an Amaryllis a couple of years ago. It bloomed the first year and was gorgeous! It didn't bloom this year tho. I kept it inside both years. So is my Amaryllis okay????

Similar thing with my DD.. They dated 3 years, talked about getting married. He was in grad school 2 hours away. She was working full time and in grad school (6 hours from us). It was abrupt and in the middle of her huge Capstone-like project. Fortunately, like your DD, her friends rallied around her. She can't be totally sure, but she thinks he had reconnected with someone he dated previously. Well, it didn't last because two months later he was texting and facebooking DD's friends asking about her. This went on for a few months. She finally received a text from his SIL saying he missed her and wanted to talk to her. She replied " he knows where to find me." He emailed saying he broke up because wasn't sure what he wanted, yadda yadda. Her answer..." Thanks for clarifying" and that was it. I was so proud of her for not going back with him, and we really liked him and thought they were a good match. She's been seeing someone the last few months but seemed a little ambivalent about the relationship. I advised her not to date just to have someone around and she said " don't worry mom, if I don't see potential I let 'em go." It will take time but your DD will be just fine.

Been there done that!

Sorry about your friend's flight problems. Not fun!

I was headed for a cruise, buckled in on the plane, then we had to get off due to mechanical problems.

Flight cancelled, I missed connections for a flight that would get me in on time to board the ship. Ship would not wait for one lone passenger.

Spent 5 miserable hours at the airport, and ended going home in tears of disappointment.

No cruise no reimbursement. Only got the moneys held for another cruise, which I took later.

Hopefully I won't have problems this Saturday.

Good luck thoughts for your friend.

Sorry for no trip, but also glad she was able to get back home. Airports are such boring places to have to wait, the clocks there don't move.

Chisue, it's only an hour drive to airport but it was snowing here. Left early to make sure she got to airport. She was flying to Atlanta, then to Florida. Atlanta airport was closed. Had she had a direct flight, she would be enjoying Florida right now.

Glenda, that's a horrible story. At least the airlines refunded Pat's money but trip was cancelled and she's not rescheduling. Hope you have a great cruise this time.
