So sorry. We had one female Westie who would NOT be trained to come when called. Once she got out the door, we would only waste our time trying to get her back until she was good and ready (hungry). She ran across a busy street behind our house one time too many. We've only had males except for Rosie.

My sincere sympathy is with you. All of us who are animal parents understand the hurt of such a loss.

When you are ready to adopt another dog, let me encourage you to look at your local animal shelter. I went to ours with a friend in January or February one year. I was amazed at all the pure bred, adult dogs that they had. These dogs looked healthy and well-cared for. I asked one of the employees why there were so many nice dogs there. She told me that it happens every Christmas. People bring their family dog to the shelter and give it up so that they can buy a new puppy for Christmas. I was flabbergasted. So do check out your local animal shelter. There might be a lovely and loving dog there looking for someone to love.

If dogs could only understand the danger of the street and cars. Our dog often does not come when called and recently ran across a busy street in the dark. We finally caught him, but both my husband and I were practically shaking.

SheilaJoyce, your message broke my heart. I see dogs and cats on Kijiji all the time. It's amazing how many sudden "allergies" there are, and other reasons for throwing their pet to the curb. I want to bring them ALL home!

I am sorry to hear of this - hopefully, you can figure out how he escaped and get it fixed. My beautiful Border Collie died the day after Memorial Day, 2013 - we are still heart-broken.

I have a Dachshund who went missing for four hours over a year ago. I was sure he was killed on our busy main street and side street plus alley. Thankfully he was found trying to climb a tree after a squirrel. Now he is never let loose in the yard, because he always finds a way to escape the fenced in yard. He's always tethered. Has no street sense and on walks would chase motorcycles if not on a leash.

I feel so sorry for you. It's not your fault. It is what it is. This often happens thru no fault of the owners.

My heart is breaking for you. Sophie was a beautiful girl. I, too, have a pound pup that I've never been able to train to come. She is a beautiful standard poodle who has escaped several times and I was always terrified she would have the same fate. She has been very lucky.

I totally concur with what Sheilajoyce said. When you are ready for a new companion for Homer give the pound a try. There are so many beautiful and sweet dogs available. I adopted the sweetest little bichon/poodle mix as my 3rd dog in October and I love her to pieces. Best wishes to you and your family, and give Homer a hug for me!

I have been doing ok with this. Homer barked and called her all night last night. He ran all over the lot looking for her everywhere. He came in at 6 this morning and searched the house. Then he went back out.
Cindy has never had a dog before Homer and she got really attached. Homer was dropped at our house as a big puppy. He moved onto our front porch and wouldn't leave. It was in the spring time so we had the windows open and he could hears us watching TV and talking. Cindy tried to take him a bowl of water but he growled at her. A few days later Homer got under the window and was whining. Cindy wanted to try again so this time she took him a big pan of leftover spaghetti. Homer loved it. When he finished that pan he picked it up and brought it back to Cindy for more. He has been ours ever since.
We decided that Homer needed a companion so we went to the shelter and got one. But the one we picked turned out to be dangerous so we had to take her back. She was a loving dog but she had to be the only dog.
Then we found a dog like Sophie but a little older thru PetFinder. We went to meet someone about the dog but with the time difference (we're on central time, Chattanooga is on Eastern) we missed each other. But while we were at the meet up spot, a car came in and stopped and put out a sign advertising free puppies. We looked at them and picked Sophie. She turned out to be a perfect companion for Homer.
Except she wouldn't stay in the dog lot. No matter what we did she managed to escape. She wouldn't go far. She always stayed near Homer.
Sophie was with us for 3 and a half years. She looked much the same grown up.
It rained pretty good all day today so burial will be tomorrow.

Such lucky dogs to have such a big area to run in. Too bad she liked cars. We had a car chasing dog years ago.
