2 more favourite British shows

I couldn't find the other thread that I made about liking British shows. We found "Vera" a few weeks ago, and Rosemary and Thyme were recommended, and Scott and Bailey.

I was sure that the blonde detective in Scott and Bailey is "Caroline" from Last Tango in Halifax but she's not. I wonder if LTIH is done production and we can look for it online.

But "Caroline" is the central character in Happy Valley. I loved Last Tango.

Pam, is Happy Valley good? I'll have to add that to the list.

BTW, Last Tango is on again, we watched this season's first episode last nite.

We've certainly commented on the short seasons of BBC shows. Tango has only 6 episodes, Scott and Bailey, etc. We breezed through the 2 seasons of Tango very quickly.

Well....the star in a Gifted Man made $100,000 per episode. Then the episode itself probably cost anywhere from $500,000 to $1,000,000 EACH. That's a lot of money for a studio to put out if viewers aren't watching and advertisers aren't paying to advertise on it. Unfortunately, it is about the bottom line. And many studios prefer to pull the plug early, rather than continue to pour money down a rat hole and hope for the best. They can't recover those kind of losses if they decide to keep a full 22 episode season at $22-30 million total for no return. Then consider they may have 5 new shows on this season that are underperforming - that's a potential $100 million plus loss in a single year. If it was your money, you'd probably do the same. The economics of TV today are staggering. There are always people who complain about cancellations, but truthfully - would anyone cancel a profitable success? Sometimes there's a ground swell to bring back a show - Southland was a good example, but you can bet that cable picked it up at a guaranteed reduced budget and reduced numbers of episodes, and that cable fees are helping to subsidize it - something networks don't get.

I don't think "Scott & Bailey" is London-based. Maybe Birmingham? (Thank heavens for closed captions!) I see Ruth Wilson (from "Luther") has won a Golden Globe for "The Affair". We were enthralled with 'Alice', her crazy character in "Luther". (Now to find "The Affair"!) Right now we are using Redbox and watching recordings from "Downton Abbey". Just recorded the first "Grantchester".

I haven’t seen either show, I will look for them. I like the idea of not allowing owners to move in if they haven’t respected the time limits, or even better in my view, if the historic modifications that were agreed upon were not observed or respected. We have problems in our city with speculative developers who purchase old houses or schools and then rather than restore them as they suggested they would, they let them sit for years and years until they must be demolished for safety reasons. Then of course a condo tower does up. The other problem is developers who agree to restrict a development to two storeys, but end up building three. Or their approved plans don’t show a roof top terrace over looking their neighbout’s yard, but they build it without approval. They get a slap on the risk from the city, but they never lose their property or have the project torn town. It’s a scam, especially in heritage districts and our city let’s them get away with it. If the city demolished the new structure, or denied developers or homeowners occupancy rightsjust once or twice I bet the rules would be followed far more often. So I’m all for the British rules!

2020's Covid Christmas tree. Since family was not allowed in our home and I was sad, I decided not to put up a tree for just DH and myself. My 6 year-old granddaughter felt sorry for us, so with her mother's help, she made one as her gift to us. Best Christmas tree we've ever displayed.

Anyone watching Foyle's War? It's pretty good, and there are a lot of episodes (Netflix).

I noticed yesterday that PBS is rerunning The Jewel in the Crown, which I believe they first aired in the 70's. I didn't get to see all of it then, and did read all of Paul Scott's books, The Raj Quartet, so I'm glad I'll be able to see it in it's entirety now. It's about colonial India in the mid 40's.
Quite good.

I've just started watching Broadchurch and so far like it a lot. Foyle's war is a favorite.

Jas, Happy Valley is good, but darker than Last Tango. Broadchurch and Hinterland also. We have become addicted to Netflix, but my hubby doesn't watch the same shows. Foyle's War and Midsummer Murder are my favorites and they have long series.

Love Foyle's War, also Inspector George Gently. Broadchurch was remade in the USA and concluded late fall or early winter but again I have forgotten the name -- Greystone? There are a few more British detective shows I like, but I cannot recall their names at the moment. Last Tango was good. Vicious was too over the top for me.

Was Vicious the comedy with the man from Tango and his husband?
We watched a couple of episodes but the constant bickering got to us.

I am also enjoying Grantchester on PBS Mystery. I am watching it on the PBS ap. it is on after Downton Abbey, but I keep forgetting to DVR it.

"Gracepoint" was the US remake of Broadchurch. I thought it was very well done. The did announce that the ending would be different so that you weren't watching the exact same show.

Loved Foyle's War, staring Michael Kitchen.

We're in the midst of Downton Abbey and have started Grantchester (have Episode Two recorded for tomorrow).

I thought Jewel In The Crown was a long slog -- didn't like Thorn Birds either.

I see there's a remake of Poldark, which is the very first Masterpiece Theater presentation I can remember, but I remember that being rather tedious too.

What I can't wait for is Wolf Hall. I could read that and Bring Up the Bodies a second time -- may have to if I want to follow the plot.

I can't get into Grantchester. Guess I don't like the mysteries, except for Endeavor. I also love the music on that one.

I think that Foyle's War was my favorite British series. I also enjoyed Midsummer Murders and Prime Suspect a lot. I just loved the characters in Foyle's War, I like that era. I've been watching Broadchurch, I was disappointed to find out that there are only 8 episides,I'm on #6. I get my money's worth from Netflix.
