we have such odd heating, that sounds yummy...have been relying lot on my electric throws, and comforters...but I get stuffy with dh's fan on, so head down the hall to the guest room, lol....

I can't stand the cold.
But, I found a solution. Mattress pad with dual heat adjusters, then top sheet and down comforter (I hate heavy blankets).
Lightweight, but toasty.

I usually get by with my electric mattress pad and a couple of blankets but last week I took the blankets off and put my down comforter on. I turn on the electric mattress pad a little while before I go to bed. Then I wake up a few hours later and am too hot so I turn the mattress pad off. Down comforter keeps me toasty the rest of the night.

I used to use a down comforter, until I turned 50. All you female readers will understand when I say that I had to stop using it. Usually just use a sheet now. If it's really really cold outside and I can hear the window howling, I'll pull a blanket up over the sheet (to my waist only - any higher and I'm way too hot).

I gave the down comforter to DS and his wife. They love it.

We have a feather bed and a down duvet. Totally enveloped in down all year round. Like sleeping in a cloud.

For real emergencies, where we lose power for extended periods, we also have a wool quilt and a buffalo robe. When not needed for warmth, the wool quilt goes back in the closet, and the buffalo robe on the floor in the living room. Keeps your toes comfy when watching tv.

I loved my down comforter until I started using the woodstove again. It's not far from the air register in my bedroom floor, and it really heats that room (which is unheated otherwise). The down comforter became way too hot, and I gave it away.

Now I have a down-alternative comforter, and not a very heavy one. I also have an ultra-soft fleece blanket, which I pull up if my room cools down enough toward morning.

Oh, and I'm loving the electric foot-warming pad, even if it does drive me nuts by blinking and needing to be unplugged occasionally. I always turn it off before I go to sleep. I liked my heated full-mattress pad, too, but the foot warmer was a lot cheaper, and--for me--the most important area to be warmed.

The electric blanket under my mattress pad is at least 40 years old. Over the pad are a bottom sheet, top sheet, light blanket, down duvet. I warm the bed, get in, and turn off the electric control.

Here on Maui I'm starting with two light blankets. I remove one and pull it back up in the cool morning. I may just use one blanket tonight. It's 82F this afternoon. We have a wonderful cross-breeze and night locks on the sliders.

I have a down comforter for winter and a down blanket for summer.

Am hot natured, unlike you, so nothing else beside sheets for me. Although I do sleep with a quilt at my feet during winter and a light blanket during the summer.

Electric blankets are way too hot for me.

How do you keep comforters on the bed. I don't like heavy bedding, but I get so cold. I toss and turn so much, I don't think it would stay on the bed.

I stayed in a Marriott Hotel one time that used white sheets and pillow cases and a comforter in a white duvet. It was wonderful, to know every thing was nice and clean, plus light weight.

Emma, comforters aren't usually tucked in, but they don't have to be slippery. The duvet covers I used to use weren't slippery at all. Smart of Marriott to encase the comforter in a cover that can be changed with the room's occupants.

Have you thought about why you toss and turn so much? Is your mattress comfortable? Your pillow? Some people have found that calcium and magnesium help reduce muscle movement during sleep. Or perhaps you would benefit from a different supplement.

Sew the fitted corner parts of an old sheet to the lower corners of the duvet.

Why a heated mattress pad? Wouldn't they get too decrepit from the daily - well, nightly, if you want to be precise - pounding to get worn out early in their projected life?

Why not an electric blanket, that must undergo much less torture?

If you wan to get the mattress warm before turning in, turn on the electric blanket a half hour before retiring: it'd warm the mattress for you. And after you've entered, you wouldn't need the warming of the mattress further, would you?

Granted, living in the South I don't have to contend with really cold weather at night, even though I do turn my thermostat down to around 55 at night. I sleep so much better when it's cool in the room, and I will even leave my bedroom door to the backyard open a crack. (No, I've never been afraid, and live in a safe neighborhood, and have a dog in the bedroom with me.)

What I do is blow hot air from my hair dryer inside my nightgown just before I put it on. Nice and toasty. You could do that with socks also if you wear them at night.

My Dad used to lie on my Mom's side of the bed to warm it up while she was getting ready for bed, then move over to his own (cold) side when she got in LOL. Thanks for making me remember this :)

Why a heated mattress pad?

One reason is that heat rises. If the heat source is underneath, you benefit from the rising heat. If it is above you, as it would be with an electric blanket, the heat dissipates into the air. Yes, you get some of it, but not all.

The other reason is that electric mattress pads might be safer than electric blankets. I've read they emit less electromagnetic radiation. But that was some time ago, and I should probably look into it again.
