My mother who is now 84 (85 next month) just gave me her Home Ec book from grade 8. The date in the book is 1942. She gave me the book because she no longer wants to make the Christmas steamed pudding and has passed the job onto me. I always thought that the recipe came from some fancy cookbook but no - it comes from her grade 8 cookbook. She must have loved the book and the course because she wound up majoring in home ec in university.

Anyway, I like my toast light brown with butter and then either peanut butter or honey. The bread is a country grain with seeds baked at a local bakery and no preservatives.

My mother used to make it in the oven under the broiler. She'd toast one side, flip it over and when that side was lightly browned she buttered it and sprinkled sugar and cinnamon on top. The sugar would get a lillte crust. Man, was that good.

These days, I like my toast with butter and apple butter.

My mom once had a toaster that only toasted on one side and when it popped up you put it back in on the other side. We would laugh and laugh at that toaster. I love toast anyway its made.

I have always loved toast that is toasted very dark.....and the reason is because of my mom.
I didn't realize until I got married that toast was not something you almost burned then scraped before eating.
We call burnt toast "Annie toast."

My mom made lots of milk toast for my dad because he had stomach ulcers - worked to keep his stomach from hurting. We ate it, as kids and I liked it - great comfort food.

I had milk toast for lunch today.....homemade bread, of course! That and a cup of hot chocolate gave me my calcium today.

I use a toaster oven. Here on Maui it's a little $12 wonder from K-Mart. It is much faster than my expensive Krups at home, but I wouldn't trust it to really 'bake' anything more than biscuits. The Krups can do a pie.

We both like rather thick slices of whole grain or rosemary bread, medium brown with unsalted butter. I'm picky about getting the whole slice evenly buttered without soggy spots or bare ones. I want *either* jam or butter, not both.

Do you remember toasters with with sides that were hinged at the bottom, sort of like 'wings'? You'd pull the sides out, put the bread on them, then close the sides up to toast.

Lightly toasted in the toaster is the only way ever done in my life.
Buttered...then if I want honey, creamed or local berry honey(right now a very fragrant blueberry)...sometimes with a smear of homemade jam or preserves.

When I was a kid, toasted buttered bread, peanut butter and jelly. Smooshed well..with a glass of milk..

Hubby likes his more toasted than any of us in the house.

These cold days in Ohio, my favorite toast is on either side of good cheese and toasted on a griddle on top of the stove! Gives me great comfort and too many pounds!

patti43 - cinnamon and sugar on toast is one of my all time favourite comfort foods. I love it.

I like mine in the toaster, toasted to a nice even golden brown. I don't like it burned. I don't like butter, but do use margerine (big loud gasp! Yes, trans fats.... when they make butter taste like margerine, I'll eat it LOL), and it has to cover the entire slice of toast. If the toast cools off before I get the margerine on it, I'll eat it dry. It has to melt into the toast.

I like mine made in my toasted oven on bake, I put a little olive oil on it and sprinkle a little grated cheese and bake for 6 minutes, it comes out so crunchy and delicious. I love crunchy food.

you have to be careful, but have you ever toasted angelfood cake? it's awesome!

I love toast but we rarely have bread in the house. My favorite might be pumpernickle with cream cheese. But any whole grain is fine, with butter and almost any topping. Freshly baked would be a treat, that's for sure. Yum.....cinnamon sugar!

When growing up in the Chicago area, we used to regularly get English muffin bread--don't know what kind. It made the best toast. I don't know where to find that kind of bread.

One of my most enduring memories of my grandmother is the sound of scraping the burnt parts off toast. I don't know why but it seems she also burnt it and had to scrape! Funny.

Oh that toasted rosemary bread sounds awesome, Chisue! I forgot to mention that before I eat the toast, I tear off the crust. Haha! My mother used to tell me that if I ate the crust it would give me curly hair. That's why it's straight as a stick today!

Some of the best toast I ever had was white bread toasted over a campfire in winter! We used a crazy metal contraption that you leaned the bread onto and it sat just near the fire. So good.

Marita, Kroger's carries an English toasting bread in their bakery department. It's in where the sourdough bread is located. I don't know where you live, but you might check it out. It's very good bread.

murraysmom, we had a pie iron, when we camped. Made the best fruit pies.

Cold winter days, with fire in the fireplace, we'd invite neighbors and pull out the pie irons.

Fond memories.

I like my toast fairly well toasted, all kinds of bread, usually with real butter and sometimes I will have apple butter or different jellies and many times cinnamon and sugar. I have heard of milk toast but don't think that is for me. French toast of course is a favorite of mine. When I was still at home early on we must have not had a toaster and our toast was always fixed in a skillet and I can remember my Mother scraping off the burned part. I have fixed the cinnamon toast under the broiler and it is really good, but don't take the time just for me and don't keep my toaster ovens in the house, they are stored in the garage.

Sue, yes - I certainly do remember the 'hinged' toaster - that's what we had when I was growing up.

English Muffin Bread - our Safeway carries it in their bakery department under their own label. I like it too, loaves are a little smaller than some and about $2.

I don't remember ever living in a house without a toaster, I do remember making toast over an open fire on our frequent family camping trips though.

Ezekiel bread spritzed with olive oil, and toasted in the toaster oven. Wonderful!

I love lightly burnt toast with butter and sometimes cinnamon on top. My friend gave me a jar of persimmon jam she made for Christmas and I just finished that up. It was delicious with a hint of ginger. I also love bitter marmalade or Silver Shred on my toast or mashed banana

Milk toast: with eggs poached in the heated milk, poured over buttered toast with salt, pepper and a slice of cheese on top. THAT is my comfort food. Wish I had time to make some this morning, it snowed last night.

If I want toast, I put in the toaster and then real butter on it.
If I want toast as a snack, I butter it first and then put in the toaster, sometimes with garlic on it.

I've had milk toast once and didn't care for it, however if I was hungry enough I would eat it again

Lightly toasted in the toaster. Then, when I pull it out, a little bit of butter until it melts, then a little bit of peanut butter and it gets melty too. Which is like once every three months or so. I don't eat much bread.

We had one of the ones with the two wings and the little wooden handle on the side to turn the wing down to put the bread in ...then had to watch 'em, so that they didn't smoke.

Had to flip 'em, too, to toast the other side. Need to watch again, to be sure that the second side didn't smoke, either/too.

Sort of like needing to turn the other side, when sunbathing.

Just right! For my sister and myself when we'd get to the table to eat the milk toast.
