A sad reminder to wear your seat belt

One of the many crashes involving ice along the East Coast yesterday was this one at 9:30 a.m., which took the lives of a man and his 13-year-old son. Neither wore a seat belt, and both were thrown out of their vehicle. The father was then run over by a tractor-trailer and a van. I hope his wife didn't see that part.

I don't know this family myself, but I know a number of people who do. They own a Italian deli, and are well known and well liked in the community.

With all the publicity given to seat belt safety these days, it's hard to understand why some people don't wear them. Someone I love beyond words is alive today because she wore her seat belt. And long before that, the seat belt habit I instilled in my children was one of the best things I did as a mother.

My late mother-in-law refused to wear one, despite the fact that her son felt so strongly about their use that he had them installed in our cars before they were standard equipment. She used to say, "I want to be thrown clear."

No, you don't, Mom. No, you don't.
