isn't that wonderful? haven't they written cookbooks about label recipes over the years? some of the best things my mother made were from the los angeles times...back in the day when they had "real" food sections....still have some of the clippings she had saved....

I made tamale pie a lot when my kids were growing up. So yummy! I had to give up cheese--and tomatoes too--so no more tamale pie for me. :-/

I have a "few" of my own old recipes on the counter right now! I was looking for something different to make and found more than I needed! It's been YEARS since I really used any of those recipes. The one I chose, sour cream coffee cake, didn't have any directions; just the ingredients written on the back of an envelope. It's been at least 20 years since I've made that. It was YUMMY!

I like the Bisquick recipes. Cheeseburger pie, and there's a taco one, too. And I made Bisquick biscuits with 7-up and BUTTER!

The first year I was retired I baked myself right out of all my jeans. I've been more careful since then. And I'm back into those jeans.

I like the Bisquick/7Up biscuts too! I also like the bisquick/chicken/broccoli impossible pie.

I still have a bunch of old recipes ( I think) that I don't know what I am going to do with since I moved. Some here, some up at the house.

The tamale pie turned out pretty good.

Susan, not sure about that cookbook, would be interesting to see, though.

I don't have my Brand Name cookbooks here but I have several. Almost every imaginable recipe can be found in them. There are also individual ones like Jello, Bisquick, Philly Cream Cheese, etc., any and every product that had recipes on the packages. A lot of them can be found by googling Brand name recipes which will also bring up amazon cookbooks of the like. Here is one site that may be helpful.

One thing to remember when using old back-of-the-box recipes......the sizes of many products have shrunk so "a can of" or "a box of" might not be the same volume it was when the recipe was originally published.

Never had tamale pie, but I do love tamales. I'll have to look that up.

Aw, susanjf, you must be talking about one of my favorite writers, Ruth Reichl. She was "...the restaurant critic of both The New York Times(1993-1999) and the Los Angeles Times (1984-1993), where she was also named food editor." She surely can write about food.

One of the first things I learned how to "cook" back in the 60's. Saw the recipe on the internet somewhere and made it again last week. Nostalgia! LOL

Cheery Cherry Cheese Pie

8-oz pkg cream cheese, softened
14-oz can sweetened condensed milk
1/3 c lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla extract
14-oz can cherry pie filling, chilled

In medium bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy.
Add condensed milk, blend thoroughly.
Stir in lemon juice & vanilla.
Pour into graham cracker crust. Chill 3 hours or until firm.
Top with desired amount of pie filling. Serve immediately or chill again until ready to serve.

it's good, isn't it? My younger sister doesn't like it with the cherries on it (what?! everything is better with cherries!), so he serves it on the side.

What is the recipe for tamale pie...that sounds like something I would like...Sounded so good I had to google it...I will try it because I love tamales...I make the real thing every Christmas...

I remember that pie we all made it I bet!
I also love the bisquick recipes, all the impossible pie ones, I have made all of those over the years. Haven't made any in a very long time.
I just bought new binders to sort out my recipes, that will be a task.
Many manufacturer websites have good recipes on them using their products, much like the old box recipes. Kraft, ragu, Rotels, hunts etc I visit them and find really good stuff to try.
Lately though my best resource is pinterest, I have really been pleased with many I have found there.

What about fudge pie :o)

Albers Tamale Pie Casserole by jinxycat

INGREDIENTS

Crust
1-1/4 cup albers yellow cornmeal
1/2 tsp. salt
1-1/2 cup Carnation Evaporated Milk
1 cup water

Filling
1 lb. ground beef
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell peppers
1 cup cream-style corn
1/2 cup sliced black olives, drained
1 cup tomato sauce
1 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese

INSTRUCTIONS

For the crust, combine the cornmeal, salt, evaporated milk and water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently for 5 to 7 minutes or until thickened. Remove 1/2 cup, cover with plastic wrap. Spread the remaining cornmeal mixture on bottom and sides of greased 8-inch square baking dish. Cool for 2 to 3 minutes if necessary. Bake in preheated 425ðF oven for 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

For filling, brown beef, garlic, onion and bell pepper in large skillet; drain. Add corn, olives, tomato sauce, chili powder, salt and pepper. Mix well. Spoon into cornmeal crust. Drop rounded teaspoons of remaining cornmeal mixture on top of meat, sprinkle with cheese. Return to oven and bake for 15 minutes.

CHEF COMMENTS

I found this recipe because someone had been asking for it. You may try adding a small can of green chiles and extra garlic. Maybe enchilada sauce instead of the tomato sauce...

My grandma made tamale pie for all of us on Christmas eve for many years. I haven't had it in ages. Sounds so good!

bisquick/chicken/broccoli impossible pie. I haven't done that one! There's a recipe on the back of the Stove Top for frozen broccoli, deboned chicken, mush soup, and stove top. It's good, quick and easy.

That's the cherry cheesecake I always make. Hmm. think I will do that tomorrow. I was planning on a baking/cooking day anyway.
