My first goal is to get my plants moved from the old house to the new one. We moved from PA to Denver in 2007 and have been renting since then. I don't think I have been on GardenWeb since we moved. I did bring a bunch of things with me that first spring. This spring we are buying a house not too far from where we have been renting. I need to dig a holding bed as soon as we close and start moving my stuff. I have a few things I would like to find a permanent home for before digging (like lavender) but most things just need to stay alive. Also the house needs paint so I won't be doing any foundation beds until after that happens. I hope to spend spring and summer digging and mulching and preparing for next spring. Oh, and there are fruit trees. :) We'll have apple, pear and plum. I think one of the apples is going to be a bit of a sacrificial victim of my learning to prune. Really I don't think I could make it worse short of killing it. The last two years I've been only barely motivated to do any gardening. Getting ready to buy this place and have my very own yard to do with as I please has really brought my energy and interest levels back up. :)

2013 Tomato Grow List

Mike, Most beefsteak types are late to set fruit and to mature fruit. Since yours are from volunteer seedlings, you have no idea what is normal for them if you don't remember what variety they are, but it sounds like they are setting fruit late and, thus, it ripens late. Too much horse poop also could mean they are getting too much nitrogen which makes the plants stay vegetative for a long time before they flower and set fruit. If you want fruit earlier, your best bet is to start out with purchased transplants and to choose varieties that mature more quickly than the average beefsteak type. You could plant Early Girl, Bush Early Girl or Better Bush and get fairly early fruit...a couple of months after you put 6-8 week old transplants into the ground. Jetsetter or JetStar would give you fruit a couple of weeks later than those, and most standard hybrids that produce red, roundish tomatoes would give you tomatoes 75-80 days after the transplants are put into the ground. Many beefsteak types, although they produce big, luscious tomatoes, do not produce fruit well in heat and they have DTMs of 80-90 days or more so they always are going to be fairly late. It may just be that in your climate, you still won't get many ripe fruit until fall. It depends on how early you can transplant tomato plants into the ground there. When's your average last freeze date? One problem is that tomato plants mostly stop setting fruit once daytime highs are above 92 and nighttime lows are in the 70s. You have to get your plants into the ground early enough that they set fruit before that happens. They won't start setting many fruit again until the temperatures cool down. That is an issue we face a lot here in OK. Cherry tomatoes or the varieties that produce smallish slicer or salad types like Jaune Flammee' or Fourth of July will set fruit more or less all summer, except in the hottest weather, so they might be a good variety for you. I like Early Girl because not only does she set fruit early, but unlike many other early types that shut down after producing early, Early Girl will go right on setting fruit almost all summer long. Some years it still is setting fruit for me in August when it is ridiculously hot here. Hope this helps, Dawn

lol I have a little room upstairs where I keep all my seed stuff. After I mailed out the last package last year, I just closed the door and did not go back in there to deal with the mess for weeks! Downstairs there are too many cats, and it takes only one to make a complete disaster of a seed box. This year I am going to take photos of the seed sorting and result mess! I don't post here a lot, but I do on the Canadian forums. I lurk here :-) I don't grow a lot of tomato varieties but I do grow for quality. This year I have one plant, grown form a seed of the original Gordon Graham tomato. He has the world's record largest tomato according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Through good fortune and a friend, I was able to trade for just a few seeds from Gordon Graham's world record tomato. I got one to germinate, so I have one tomato plant that is a direct child of his original! I do grow other tomatoes but I'm really excited about this one! We had a very bad tomato year last year with lots of BER. This year I planted the tomatoes in my good lasagne "wine" garden, dug in lots of old manure, a little lime and one Tums tablet in each hole. The same friend who gave me the seeds above, told me that a Tums will help supply the calcium the tomatoes need to help prevent BER. So I'm trying it. It's easy and cheap, so I figured "Why not?" We'll see how it goes. Needless to say, I baby that plant! In addition to that one, I am also growing our own heritage Portugal beefheart tomatoes (see link to pic below), San Marzano, Manitoba, Ailsa Craig, and Rev Morrow long keeper. I read a lot and the most memorable was A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki.
It is one of the best books I have read for a long, long time.
I got it at our local library but plan on buying the hardcover book for my collection.
I guess I should keep a list of books I have read....thanks for the reminder.

I don't keep track of what I read. I am reading the 4th in the Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean Auel and enjoying it. It's The Shelters of Stone. I found it at our Friends of the Library resale shop for fifty cents!

I don't keep track of the books I read except for posting on Book of the Week, but I plan to start doing that now. I read at least twice the number of books that I feature each week and I only describe those that I really like. I try not to waste time reading a book that I don't like, except sometimes when a book has gotten a lot of buzz and I think that there has got to be something compelling occurring soon. One such book that I found unrewarding was The sense of an ending by Julian Barnes.

Carol_in_california - author Ruth Ozeki was doing a reading this evening at the bookstore where we had dinner. After reading your post, I regret that I didn't go to hear her!

I also read a Maeve Binchy book but can't remember the name of it. It was one I hadn't read before and found it at a second hand bookstore when the kids and I went back to visit my dad. They bought tons of old books. They love books...so do I. I also bought book 5 or whatever it is of the Outlander Series...and book one. Only read the first one and need to find the books in between now.

I can't remember any others. I think I'll make a list this year of the books I've read, just to see how many I do read in a year. I used to read a lot more before I became a nurse. I think I got burned out on reading textbooks during school. lol.

Kathsgrdn reminded me that DH and I listened to Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy on different road trips and liked them. I bought the book Killing Jesus, but could not get into it.

I read the reviews on Readers Paradise forum about Ruth Ozeki's book. Interesting.
I read all of Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear series recently.
I got the entire set at our local library for a total of 30 cents.

My list is at home. I didn't care much for "The Sense of an Ending" either, Stacey. Hope Alisande liked "Learning to Swim" as much as I did!

Right now I have been engaged by -- and laughing out loud at -- "When Will There Be Good News?" by Kate Atkinson. DH brought it back from the Kihei library for me. (He is the *best* 'picker'.)

Chisue, I have to say "Learning to Swim" was my favorite of the year. I look forward to reading the sequel, "A Cold and Lonely Place."

The friend who recommended it recently recommended a series of mystery novels by A.D. Scott set in 1950s Scotland. I ordered the first one: A Small Death in the Great Glen

I also loved Learning to Swim. It is set in a nearby location and that added to my pleasure. If you like the A.D. Scott book, try Ann Cleeves' Shetland Quartet. They take place on the Shetland Islands which I think is the northern most part of Scotland. Loved the setting and the books. She is good. Some other favorites are
