I think these images are remarkable. They're certainly dazzling!

I look at them and think about how I learned to drive on these streets, and all the driving I did subsequently . . . commuting over the 59th Street Bridge to work at Rockefeller Center, driving down to the Village for the nightlife in my late teens, etc. I never gave it a second thought. Today I wouldn't be quite so calm and collected. LOL

In photo #7, the apartment where my DH and I lived is three blocks up (to the right) and one block over (to the back) from 30 Rock.

JG and ZM, Y'all are some fabulous zinnia buddies! I can't say how much I appreciate the dedication to the species. My 'Red Spider' of 2008 matched the one in Jackier's photo except mine's flowers were consistently 13 petaled. I attempted to move some Z. violacea pollen onto the Z. tenuifolia, but their anatomies seemed so different, I couldn't really imagine any success. The Peruvian in Jackier's photo looks anatomically similar enough to Z. haageana for me to imagine success. My idea to set up that cross came from the fact that Z. peruviana, Z. haageana, and Z. violacea comprise one zinnia subgenus. Thanks for the link to Southern Exposure. I can't say that I've ever been in a website so difficult to navigate (flowers not being alphabetized and ordering a catalogue a circular process leading nowhere). Still, I intend to order some of the Peruvians. One thing I didn't understand is that the number of seeds in 1/2 gram is very different for the red and the yellow. I would think that if the only difference were color, the number of seed per unit should be almost the same.

I haven't posted a whole lot here in the past few years. Mainly because I just don't post that much anymore, period. I only have 5 palms left now, including a 5 & 1/2 foot windmill, which I have had for about 5 years. I also moved to a zone 6B/7A in the mountains of far Western Loudoun County, VA. This winter has been harsh. 63.5" of snow on the year here, and many nights at zero F or below, and many days with highs of 5-12 above. The lowest we saw this winter was -9F with 10 nights below zero period, and many many more at 0-5 above. Today even, 3/26/14, after 3 more inches of snow yesterday, our high has been 27F. It should be about 55 by now! Suffice it to say even in its protected location on the south side of the house up against it in full sun, my windmill is FRIED, completely. However, the spear is still as snug as ever. If it has made it through this winter, it will be making a trip to Smithfield, VA to my partners mothers house and being planted there in her front yard. I suppose the next couple months will tell if it has in deed weathered what has been the harshest winter in 20+ years here.

As nctrnl states, there are other less expensive ways to determine if someone has been in your residence. And they are very low-tech. I would not invest in a high-tech solution unless I had evidence using the low-tech solution. Some things you can do from a low-tech stance are to place a small denomination of money (like $1) in a place where it will look like it must have fallen out of a pocket and then wait to see if it disappears. Putting the money out where it is obvious might tip the person off. Also, leave drawers and doors ajar just a tiny bit. Enough that if someone were snooping around they probably would not know enough to put them back in exactly the same place. Place a tiny piece of paper between a cabinet door and molding and watch to see if it is still where you left it - I'm talking very tiny, like no bigger than 1/4 inch. Anyway, you probably get my drift. Do tiny things that only you would know about. If those pan out, then it might be time to get into a high tech situation.

Although our house will end up costing several times what we paid for it when we're through restoring and renovating, it is a dream come true. I always wanted an historical home but never thought I would own one. The house is in my hometown, and it is a beautiful, fantastic old house. PO was a DIY fool and did a fair amount of damage to the house. We are undoing what he did. Probably won't be able to afford to undo what he did to the outside: replaced the original tile roof with metal, covered the house in aluminum siding, and replaced the 1889 windows with putrid vinyl windows. The house would probably have been eligible for National Register status without the "improvements" of siding and elcheapo windows---according to the SC Dept. of Archives and History. There's a good chance we'll have to replace the cruddy windows one day and probably do something with the siding---just to protect the house---but that is in the future. For now, replacing the porch floor, having new stucco applied to the brick columns, and restoring the interior are the priorities. We have already had the house completely rewired. All new ductwork has been added along with two HVAC systems (one for upstairs and one for downstairs). New plumbing is in the works. It will take years to get all the floors refinished (most were painted and some had carpet over that), but the ones we have had refinished are just absolutely gorgeous. We are repairing as much plaster as possible. So far, I've had only one plaster wall knocked out and replaced with sheetrock. Hopefully, that will be the only one that is too far gone to repair. Most of the woodwork is intact. I'm about to have a few pieces copied. My grandmother is 96, and we're having her bedroom and bath finished now. About 2/3 of the upstairs is on the verge of being finished. It's expensive. We're selling some property to get the funds to do a lot of the work, but living there is just living in history. We believe that we have saved the house for many more years. The house seems like a living entity. It's a beautiful neo-classical Victorian with four huge columns on the front, a wraparound porch, a gorgeous front staircase, a back staircase, six fireplaces, original parlor light (gas/electric design), and original front door with leaded glass sidelights. Even though I'm pouring my time and money into the house, it is all worth it to me. I just hope I can get everything done that the house needs. Please, please, research before you destroy great things about your old house. And if you know how---really know how---to DIY, that's great. But don't ruin the house like the PO tried to do to our house. Of course, he thinks we're "messing up" all the great things he did---like adding trailer wallboard over the plaster and ripping out claw foot tubs to add fiberglas. I'm going to stop now; I'm returning to a place I don't want to revisit! On with the restoration!

Those are amazing! I have only been to NYC once and that was years ago. We took a tour in a double layer bus to determine what we want to go back and see, and I am glad we did, because there were several things that were the same in any large city--such as the garment district. We loved the subway system and the stores underground. We had camped in NJ and took a bus into the city and it was so much easier and cheaper!! Loved it.

I grew up and lived as an adult in a big city (LA), but obviously it's very different.

You drove in that!? I mean the pictures are remarkable, but I'm even more blown over by you driving in it. I haven't been there, but I've been to San Fran, Chicago, Atlanta, LA, and I know I would never want to drive in it. Big city driving isn't for me. Happy to be there, and even happier to leave it to taxi drivers, trains, and the bus.

Sure, I drove all over the place, and never gave it a second thought. And this was back when cars were big!

But I don't think the traffic conditions were quite as hazardous then. In recent years while riding in a cab on 6th Avenue I thought, This driver is out of his mind! Then I realized all the cab drivers seemed to be out of their minds. LOL

BIG grin!

When I went to visit Annie (from the Cooking forum), we got into a cab in Chicago, she looked at me and said "Hang on!", she meant it. Slide to one side, slide to the other. It was fun! Doubt I'd think that if I had to do it every day. We decided they made their money based on how many fares they could pick up, so the sooner they were done with you, the sooner they could move on to the next. You gotta have nerves of steel.

To each, his own. I only like 'city' in small doses.

I am always happy to leave light pollution behind. On Maui I can actually see the night sky -- along with the observatories located in the islands *because* there's so little light pollution. It's peaceful for the eyes as well as the ears.

Our flights home are usually at night. I often see the string of lights outlining the west coast as we make landfall. Every year, the lights seem to have crept higher into the mountains. Inland, the land is dark until the inferno of lights that is Las Vegas. Through the mountains are small outposts here and there-- tiny clusters of light in mountain valleys, on farms and ranches, in small towns. There are people there, but the land is king.

When our flight ends before dawn, Chicago sprawls ugly with its sodium vapor street lights. Lake Michigan is big and dark to help me pinpoint home.

The NBC nightly news closes with an aerial shot of Manhattan. I am amazed that so many people would choose to live so close together on this tiny island, ever building higher. Fun for some, just not this 'one'.

Oh, Alisande, I always like to SEE stuff. I just don't want to live everywhere I see.

Actually, right now on Maui we have some stinkin' weather. There's a swath of pollution covering the island chain-- supposedly due to vog from the volcano, but who knows if it didn't originate in China. (One world and all that.)

You don't suppose it's making me a little cranky, do you? I'm trying to stay indoors until the Trades resume, but this began last Friday.

Alisande, all I can say is WOW WOW WOW!!! I love those pictures. From that high up, the city is simply alive and teaming with energy!! They are beautiful. I recognized a few places. While looking at them, I was thinking of the millions of people that live there. Overwhelming!!

Many years ago I lived in Baltimore. I had driven up to New Haven to visit my brother for the weekend. On the way home on Sunday night, I took a wrong turn and ended up in Manhattan. I had been to New York a number of times. Had even driven in the city. I knew where I was but not sure how to get back out and back to Baltimore. I saw a car ahead of me with Maryland plates, so I glued myself to his bumper and pretty quickly we were on the Verrazano bridge heading into New Jersey and the way back home!!! I made it the rest of the way with no problem.

I loved living so close to New York, Washington DC, Virginia. Those were some very fun times. Thanks for bringing those memories back!!
