What's for Dinner ... Friday?

The ice on my sidewalk was able to thaw today so I made it out to go see my sister at the home and run my own errands. Felt good to get out.

I'm having dried beef gravy over a potato. Haven't decided on the vegetable yet.

What is/was your choice for your main meal today?

Homemade white chili
Oven baked corn tortilla chips from tortillas I had in the freezer
Baked ham (friend brought me) and cheese sandwich

Chili, toast and a green tossed salad. Easy, peasy, 'cause tonight is game 7 between New York and Tampa Bay. Winner tonight plays the winner of tomorrow nights game 7 between Anahiem and Chicago for the Stanley Cup. Tomorrow night is the gang coming over for a BBQ to watch the big game.

Its confusing because it goes against what has been the accepted common knowledge since perhaps the early 1800's. The farmers growing them and calling them yams, are wrong. The grocers selling them and calling them yams, are wrong. The companies canning them and labeling them as yams, are wrong. The people who first introduced them to the United States called them yams, perhaps to distinguish them from the different variety of sweet potatoes that were already on the market, they were wrong too. Even some sites on the web that try to explain the difference with helpful images like this one: http://www.frugallivingnw.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/yams-sweet-potatoes-is-there-a-difference-2.jpg are wrong. (hint they are all sweet potatoes, despite their labels) So it is not at all surprising that what I learned at a young age from my mother and grandmother, and which was continually re-enforced every Thanksgiving or every time I visited a grocery store, is wrong. I have never eaten a true yam in my life, and seeing some of the pictures of what a true yam look like, I probably never will. Does it harm me in any way if other people choose to call some varieties of sweet potatoes "yams", no. It merely bothers the pedantic part of me a little when someone asserts something to be a fact, when they are in fact wrong.

Just made some Caesar salad dressing and topped the salad with blackened salmon for DH. I was too tired to eat myself. Maybe in a little bit. Returned home from a golfing trip with the ladies….3 days of golf and late nights. Took one day off except for Mexican train last night and played golf today. Looking forward to a quiet weekend.

It's ridiculously hot here over 100. Hubby is going to throw a couple of nice bone in ribeyes on the grill, leave the heat outside. I will do some baby red potatoes in the microwave instead of the oven. Sliced tomatoes. I am not hungry at all, had a slice of pizza for late lunch. I had carotid artery scans done today and the vampires had to have some of my blood too. Whew too hot to be out doing anything! Another baby died in a car I saw on the news, at a Waffle house restaurant, I just don't get that one. A man came running out to the car when he saw the ambulance pull up. I guess he just needed some waffles. Crazy stuff.

Veal cutlets, baked potato and braised swiss chard.

We love swiss chard, and rarely get nice fresh stalks here in the winter. The bunch I picked up today looks like I just picked it out of the garden.

I am unfortunately still sick, so I did what Cajuns do to help feel better and improve a dreadful day, I made a pot of chicken and okra gumbo.
A good gumbo can help what ails you. That and lots of naps.

Re-heated left overs of mashed potatoes and ribs, with fried cabbage on the side. 'Twas all good!!

So sorry that you are still under the weather, Raven. Rest well.

Robert hasn't felt good either, so I made a batch of hot and sour soup....if that doesn't cure what ails ya, nothing will, lol.

We had leftover oven roasted veggies with stewed tomatoes/onions/peppers and European wieners.

Glenda: Your fix at home meals are as good sounding as the meals at your restaurants. I use your recipe for white chili as a base but make changes to suit me.

Betsy: Do you have enough for me?

Rose: Good for you for finding decent swiss chard. Your meal sounds very good.

Raven: I'm so sorry you're sick. I hope your gumbo makes you feel lots better and quickly.

Phyllis: "Twas all good". It sounds that way to me too. I love leftovers.

Rhizo: Sorry to hear Robert isn't feeling well either. I hope your soup does the trick.

I made barbeque country style boneless pork ribs, stuffing, with tons of vegetables, and a spicy stir fried cauliflower dish from Pioneer Woman. It was a big hit with husband. He is really enjoying all the new vegetable dishes!

We had pizza. The place was super busy, and we waited 45 minutes for takeout. At least we have leftovers for lunch tomorrow.
