Mighty good! cobbler

Lunched at The Paw Paw Patch and instead of an extra veggie I got blackberry cobbler.

They make cobbler the way I grew up eating it.

Layered crust with the middle layer soft and the top layer crusty.

Got mine "to go" so I could enjoy when I got home.

Asked them to give me extra crust which I really love.

So good! I especially love Paw Paw Patch's peach cobbler.

I like this kind of cobbler much better than the cake like cobbler.

I do too, Glenda. This brought back memories of the one my mother used to make from blackberries picked on our land. The pan was one of those blue ones with white specks. It probably was a 10X13 but it seemed bigger. She didn't use a bottom crust, just a very thick top crust, sprinkled w/sugar and nicely browned. We ate it warm with milk on it. I can picture it like it was yesterday.

I don't know why knotweed has a bad rep. It's not poisonous, unsightly, or dangerous in any way. In fact, it helps protect rivers, streams, and lakes from erosion. It makes a good hedge and has very pretty flowers. It provides a food source for wild animals and humans, I might add. It is extremely high in nutrients. If you don't want it in your yard, just mow it down like grass. Now if you want an example of a REAL noxious weed, look at the eastern white pine tree, one of the most useless trees that ever existed. It's not even good as firewood. But it's Maine's state tree, for some reason. You can clear a field one year ready to start planting the following spring, and when spring comes there's hundreds of thousands of seedlings popping up everywhere in that field. Or how about ostrich ferns, where fiddleheads come from. No one ever complains about them. Even they are more noxious than knotweed. Or how about ramps. They grow in patches measured in acres, and there are festivals honoring them. Or how about raspberries. Ever tried walking a mile through wild raspberries? But in my opinion, knotweed is a useful, but very maligned plant.

I agree. I don't think they would be that good. I slice the pie, separate the pieces a little so you can remove easily, then freeze it. Then vacuum seal individual slices for 1-2 servings. Remove from package before thawing, thaw, heat fruit pies in a moderate oven to freshen them.

It is acceptable that a top-crust cobbler can be a bit soupy. Probably why the dish exists. It is easy with fresh seasonal fruit and the top is always crisp. I've never used canned fruit because of all the gooey sugars. My dad likes the warm fruit over ice cream but could care less about the crust. Others want crust so it is a crowd pleaser and so good for breakfast the next day. (already prepping for a family reunion next month, oh my) Seems like you need a good tried and true that you trust. If you like your MIL you should ask for her recipe...my MIL is thrilled when i call her for help. I've tried different recipes based on the seasonal fruit at hand. My t&t is a rustic crostata, classic bottom pie crust baked in a glass pie plate where the crust is so thin it folds over the top slightly. If too thin it is still spoonable, but often can be served in slices, has a nice bit of crispy crust, as it is not a mile-high traditional pie. -never liked big pie. (and i make it because that is what i like). The link is just an example but they are rustic and small...fine for 4 adults. For a large family a cobbler is what i will need for my family visit. I'm heading out to my daughter's shortly for our family Christmas Party. It's basically heavy hors d'ouevres. Annie said she gets about 6 dozen out of the cookie recipe using a melon baller but obviously mine were smaller. Sausage balls are a no brainer, I can eat them for breakfast. Paw Paw Patch gives that options and even packs it in a small take home container.

gadgets, I remember picking blackberries behind my grandmother's and going inside on a summer day to mash them with sugar, add milk and eat. Memories!

I love black berries any kind of way. I buy a big container of fresh black berries, raspberry and blue berries every week. A bowl of berries is often my meal or snack. I have not done a cobbler since this summer when I made several to sell at our garden club sale. I need to make one for me.
We would go out black berry picking on the fence rows on the farm. I had a special pot I used it was like a pail had a handle with a wood grip. I still have it my grandmother gave it to me. Brings back memories for sure.

I have never been to paw paw patch but I want to go. We go to a place called Neils they make the best home made black berry pie. I always get a piece to go.

In northern CA, blackberries grow wild. I miss not having access to them and hate to pay for them at the store.

Blackberries grow wild in Alabama as well!

I enjoy other berries better than I do blackberries!

Glenda, we have the big ones that we call Dew Berries and the ones we call Black Berries are smaller. The Dew Berries are the ones we always pick to make pies and cobbler.

Marilyn, folks call Dewberrys wild Blackberries in my region, too. They are fabulous and grow in a vacant lot across the street from me - yummy and larger than Blackberries.

Yes I prefer the dew berries they are huge and juicy and sweet.
I just had a bowl of mixed berries for my snack. Yummy.
We had both kinds growing on fence rows around the fields wild, we would get tons of them and grandma would make us all kinds of wonderful goodies. We did have to watch out for the cottonmouth snakes though. A couple times we nearly stepped right on one. That puts an end to the fun!
