Today is our 40th anniversary. The weather is like it was 40 years ago. It is snowing and blowing with 35 to 50 mile an hour wind. The only difference is it is not real cold like it was back then. We got married in ND and now live in SD. Temp is 16. I think it was colder then too. I just came home from work and I only had about a 1/2 mile visibility. We were going to go out for dinner, but not in weather like this. I just put on a pot roast instead.

It's -1ÃÂº here, but terribly windy, and near blizzard without any new snow......just what's on the ground or on the roofs. I have stayed in pretty much all weekend.

Amy, We were laughing about that same sort of issue the other day. Usually, we are dry and the clay contracts and we have a hard time getting doors to shut and lock properly. Tim is always having to make little adjustments to the hinges and locks to keep them working well. Beginning with last summer's and autumn's rainfalls, the clay expanded and the house was more or less back to normal and everything was working. Now, with continual rainfall for months on end, the constantly expanding clay has the doors getting harder to close again, but in an opposite way from when the problem is caused by contracting clay. You have to laugh about it or it would make a person crazy. We spend most of our time either extremely dry or extremely wet, and precious little of it "just right". I hope drier weather is coming. At our house, we how are just a smidgen under 35" of rainfall for this calendar year. Our mesonet station is about 4" behind us, but even so, it has almost a year's worth itself. Normal or average rainfall for us is 34" based on all the years the Mesonet station has existed or about 38 or 39" based on the 30-year-average. I cannot imagine what we'll end up for this entire year if the rainfall doesn't drop off drastically. George, Been there, done that, with the water trying to suck the boots off my feet. I'm gonna need a boat if it keeps raining. We have sunshine today, y'all, and have had it for at least a couple of hours so it is hot and muggy outside where Tim is mowing and indoors as well, where I've been in the kitchen blanching and freezing oodles of snap peas and snap beans. At least it is a good year for legumes. My food processing is up for the day, so now the kitchen can cool off but Tim will be out there making mud ruts in the lawn with the mower for a while yet. I hope to be outside in the garden tomorrow morning picking tomatoes, and probably more sugar snap peas. Of course, that depends on whether or not it rains tonight. There's tons of wildflowers blooming all over now, on both sides of the river, so at least the bees, butterflies and other flying things should be thrilled. This morning we had a blue bird world out in the yard with all sorts of the birds coming for their birdseed breakfast---we had indigo buntings (which I've only seen a handful of times, mostly in the last year), painted buntings, bluebirds and blue jays. There were tons of other birds, most notably mourning doves and cardinals, but I was enthralled by the many kinds of blue birds all visiting at the same time. In every direction that I looked, I could watch blue birds flying here and there, jockeying for position in the area where I'd scattered some bird seed for them. Dawn

Paula, I worry about you and Ken and all that high water. Y'all be extra careful! After all these years of fearing that wildfire would burn us all out of our homes, now we are at the other end of the spectrum. It hasn't even taken hail to knock fruit off our plum trees. Every time we have had really high wind and heavy rain together, the ground is covered with fruit. I still hope to get enough plums to make some jelly, but that looks more and more iffy every day. My garden is the same as yours---without raised beds, there simply would be no garden left to produce anything. This week I yanked out the snap peas----the plants, though heavily loaded with peas and still in bloom, were rotting off at the ground, and they are in raised beds. I harvested all I could find as I pulled out each plant and put it on the compost pile. I'm not going to plant anything else in the ground where they were growing until we have had a few days of sunshine to dry out the waterlogged soil in those raised beds. I fear that any seed sowed there now would just rot or wash away anyhow. Robert, What is a sunny day? (grin) I feel like we have become obsessed with mowing and edging the property, precisely because we cannot do it. On the first sunny, dry-ish day we get, Tim will be mowing, and I'll be out there with the string trimmer tidying up the edges, and along fence lines and such. Tim did mow the other day, so at least the grass in the area closest to the house, garden and outbuildings is low, but the roadside and the pastures are high. You know, that snakey sort of high. I can't wait for us to at least be able to mow pathways through the fields. After Tim mowed the other day, he had just parked the riding mower in the garage when gas became pouring out from underneath it. As he was pushing it back out of the garage, I was running to the house to grab cat litter to absorb the spilled gasoline. He eventually found a hose loose and then two parts on the ground that surely must have had something to do with the loose hose, which I assume was a fuel line. So, before he can mow again, he'll have to fix the mower again. It is always something, isn't it? We've never had to work so hard just to mow the grass. Larry, Thanks for the laugh! You always say something that puts a smile on my face. I like the idea of a boat delivered by a drone. Yesterday when I heard the UPS truck coming down the road (you can hear it from a long way off once you are used to what it sounds like) I went down the driveway to meet the driver down at the road. I wouldn't have wanted for him to bring that big old truck up our flooded driveway as he might have gotten stuck in the mud. Has anyone here been counting days and nights of rain? Is anyone approaching 40 days and 40 nights? It might be time to start building an ark, and if I was building that ark, it would have two sections---one for two of each kind of animal and the other for two of each kind of plant. I have heard from Macmex and they are fine and had minimal damage. Still wondering about Mulberryknob. The only thing this has to do with gardening is the fact that it involves seeds, but it was kind of funny. A few years ago George shared some hot pepper seeds with me and I plant them almost every year because Al likes for me to dry them and grind them into flakes and he sprinkles them on his food but a bottle will last him a long time. Last year in late Fall I picked several branches of these little bright red peppers and just stuck them in a glass to dry. Al still had pepper flakes so I just never got around to grinding that bunch and thought I would probably just keep them for seeds. This weekend George sent me a message and asked me if I had some of those pepper seeds because his didn't germinate this year. I didn't see the msg until yesterday, but as soon as I saw it, I cut the stems off of some peppers and stuck them down in a little plastic jewelry size bag, and put that bag inside a bubble wrap type mailer and took it to the post office. It was super light, and the envelope probably weighed more than the contents but it puffed up a little because the seeds were whole and the plastic bag probably had a little air in it. I had to wait in line for awhile, and when I gave the lady the package to weigh, she said, "That will be $2.45." I gave her a questioning look and said, "Really?" She said, "If you can make it thinner, it won't cost as much". Without a pause, I made a fist, reached across the counter to the envelope and gave it three quick hits with the side of my folded fist. She pulled back a little and gave a little giggle, and said, "That will be 94 cents". The woman at the counter beside me laughed and said, "That would make a good commercial". It was not my intent to entertain the Post Office patrons, but it seems I did. George said he received the package today, but I didn't ask him if the pods remained in the plastic bag, or if I blew them all out into the inside of the mailing envelope. I have now been educated by USPS and realize that although you are light weight, it will still cost more if you look fat. LOL

Bruce, Thanks for letting us know how you and Janet are doing. We missed y'all at the Spring Fling, but we knew you were busy dealing with the aftermath of Mother Nature's weather temper tantrum. I am so pleased to hear how much recovery progress you've already made, and doubly pleased you have reclamation crews coming in so quickly. I believe your hard work and quick action will save some items you otherwise might have lost. It is impressive what y'all have managed to do so quickly, and it is inspiring for the rest of us who someday might face similar issues---y'all will be the shining example of what we need to do if we're ever hit by the same type of weather destruction. You know, here in OK in the springtime, anything can happen and it usually does happen to someone. I still cannot believe it happened to y'all. Hang in there and keep smiling and keep growing. I know you need your garden more than ever this year because it is such a great stress reliever and y'all certainly have had a lot of stress these last few days. Dawn

Snow, cold, and supposed to get much colder for the first part of this upcoming week. I'd love to be saying: It got up to 50 today and melted all the snow and we're to get no more the rest of this winter. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Finally pretty nice after some snow this morning and down around 8 degrees. Right now it is 37.9 and has been fairly nice out all afternoon. Son in law finally got our tractor going and scooped out around here and at their home. I am thankful for that, makes it easier to walk and to get out of the drive. Now more snow and cold again.

Happy Anniversary, bengardening! Hope you have many more to come!

Our day started beautiful and sunny and cold--15.4 degrees at eight a.m. It quickly became overcast and has "felt" like snow all day long--but it hasn't. However, we still have at least 8" on the ground and the temps are supposed to stay below freezing for the next week or ten days. Oh, we might get a little more snow, too. The bummer is that we don't usually have these extended periods of very cold, snowy weather in the Mid-Atlantic area. It's been over three weeks now, and believe me, people are ready for it to be over. Hope I don't sound as if I'm whining; I'm very blessed and grateful that we're well-fed, warm, and fairly healthy.

Happy Anniversary, bengardening!

Weather here was in the mid-50's today with similar expected tomorrow. However, we have a winter storm warning issued for most of the southern coast beginning Tues. evening. The forecast is that we could get up to three inches of snow! Most years we have no snow, so three inches is a lot to us.

Happy anniversary, Bengardening.....Hard to believe January is almost gone; I hate the months to go flying by, but can't wait for warmer weather. Today, and for several days, we have been having our 'false spring' (maybe)... temps in the high 60's and blue skies. About to change tho, and winds and clouds are picking up.... no rain in sight so drought worries increase.. Nanny, in So Oregon

We're having a real blizzard. I've been listening to the scanner. Semi going north in the southbound lane. I don't know whether they got him stopped or if he is the reason there are first responders waiting for a snowplow to take them somewhere and an ambulance on its way, too. That's happening right now. The semi was an hour ago. If you can't see the road, why are you out driving around? And now they've sent a second plow and ambulance on a parallel highway. I wasn't paying attention at the beginning so I don't know what happened that they need an ambulance. They should have closed the interstate. And then all the stupid people will find an alternate route. They all need a real good scare without death. Maybe they won't do it again.

We got married in late October, it was a beautiful day. Most of the years since then have been beautiful, too.

Today, we got up to 40ÃÂ°, tomorrow the high might be zero and drop 15ÃÂ° from there. The wind has been horrible for the past 10 days or so; we have white caps in the toilet bowl!
