what happened to sugar cubes?

is it a regional thing, or did they disappear everywhere?

Sugar cubes have never been as popular in the US as in Europe, where you still see them everywhere.

I'm sure they're still made and sold here but they're much less common than the other forms.

I haven't seen sugar cubes in years and had forgotten about them. Everything comes in little packets now.

Well I guess I'll add my two cents worth of advise and suggestions too... I use various cattle, horse, and fish feed products from farm supply stores all the time in my various compost methods, and aerated compost tea recipes. All beneficial soil organisms love various proteins, carbohydrates, sugars, and starches! These guys turn these foods into soluble nutrients for plants at the correct rates and amounts that the plants need during the growing season(s). What I do is check the NaCl salt percentage on the feed bag. Anything less than or equal to 1.00 % NaCl is no big deal to me! I put more NaCl salt than that on my soils from my own sweat during the hot humid summer months here in my zone! (LOL) Also keep in mind that there are a various number of good mineral salts, (beside NaCl salt), that are beneficial minerals for both growing healthy crops and beneficial soil organisms. If you use plenty of mature compost in your soil, and on top of your soil as an extra mulch, you'll be fine. Compost buffers local soil pH near growing crop roots. It also buffers soluble and insoluble nutrients near growing crop roots. The buffering power of mature compost is mainly because of the existence of humates and aerobic beneficial microbes in it. Another way to get more "buffering" aerobic beneficial microbes in your topsoil, to balance out NaCl salts in it, is using various aerated compost tea recipes as diluted soil drenches. The best types of ACT recipes for this purpose are the ones loaded with extra molassees products and maybe a touch of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). The extra existence of Mg, Ca, S, in the presence of humates and aerobic beneficial soil microbes, will greatly help balance and buffer Na, Cl, and other nutrients in the soil near the rhizosphere of growing healthy sustainable crops. Remember the main rule for all composting methods is balance, moderation, and of course common sense! (LOL) Be creative and have fun doing it! Happy Gardening!

Honey is sugar as far as your body is concerned. It has some interesting properties if you consume lots of it--much more than the amount you'd want to sweeten your drink. There are even topical applications for honey. But as a sweetener, it's just sugar, as is Sugar in the Raw (turbinado sugar)--see below. If by "coffee shop" you mean of the Starbucks variety, I'm guessing this is a once a day indulgence? If you mean the old American definition of a casual restaurant in the same segment as diners and "family" restaurants, then the coffee they serve might be particularly bitter and might make you want to use more sugar than you otherwise might. Crystaline table sugar: 1 packet = 1 cube = 1 measuring teaspoon (level) = 0.1 oz. = 2.3 g is 9 Calories (the capital C on nutrition info denotes kilocalories) = 1 Lifesavers candy Sugar is sucrose, which is a bonding of glucose and fructose. Enzymes in your digestive tract debond them and convert them to the forms that can be used by your bloodstream. I don't think that a Lifesaver or a sugar coffee is going to harm anyone who doesn't have sugar issues. A few tall coffees with several packets of sugar each in a day is like eating a whole roll of Lifesavers each day. That's way too much sugar, especially considering all the sugars (and starches, which are digested as sugar) that are in food. That much refined sugar is either displacing the sugar that comes in good, wholesome, whole foods, or throwing your system way out of balance. Similarly, one chemical sweetener, if you're not sensitive, likely won't do any more harm than one deep breath on a busy street, or one serving of fish from polluted waters. Several packets several times per day, however, might put more strain on your body. Sugar in the Raw brand turbinado sugar has a packet quantity of 5 g, which is more than twice as much sugar by weight as white table sugar. No wonder that less is needed! Honey: 1 teaspoon = 7 g total weight of which 5.66 g is sugar (most of the rest is water, and there are a few hundredths of a gram of protein). Honey is good in tea, but might be weird in coffee. A packet of Starbucks's honey is half an ounce (by weight), which is over 14 grams. It's 43 Calories of which 12 g is sugar. That's a lot more sugar than a packet of sugar! No sweetener might not be an option for you. The effect in the article you cited is as bad for Sweet and Low as Splenda, but none for sugar, so the best choice, analytically, would seem to be regular table sugar in moderation. Remember, you don't have to use a whole packet! If you're used to very sweet, you can taper off slowly. Start with almost sweet enough, and when that seems normal use a little less. Your perception of "sweet enough" will change and reset itself lower and lower while still allowing you to enjoy your coffee.

Don't worry about it. Many kinds of plants, including adeniums, are temperature sensitive and it effects the colors of the flowers. You should see how wild and crazy some of my tropical hibiscus and African violets can get with temperature variations. They are way more reactive than adeniums. You'd never imagine the flowers could possibly come from the same plants! So I see completely different looking flowers on them in winter than I get in summer. Anyway, once temperatures settle back to what you are more used to, your flowers will likely go back to normal as well. Feeding and PH can also have some effect but it's usually not as dramatic. I agree with Rachel that other things can also effect so good to check.

I'm glad you found it and like it. Yes, it only comes in the 32 oz tubs and it's at least a few bucks (or more) higher priced than others. But it's certified organic and MUCH richer and for me, off the scale more delicious. When we eat it at breakfast I suspect our portion is more like half a cup. When you add fruit, there's plenty to eat and enjoy. Maybe the picture Lucille described of the mild California climate applies equally to the happiness of dairy cows, It must motivate them to give it their all, lest they be shipped off to other parts of the state that are colder in winter AND hotter in summer than the idyllic area where they are. Get some small reusable containers for your husband if he likes it. He's a good guy, he's worth the little bit of effort.

Still sold in grocery stores - in an upright 1# box that looks all too similar to the boxed brown and white pure cane sugars. Likely found on the top shelf.

The Domino sugar site has a product locator. I don't know how accurate it is but find the sugar cubes on their site and look for a store near you that sells it on their locator.

DH just bought a box. Just have to look for them I think, as the box is kinda small. He uses them in his tea.

I also haven't seen them for years, but the thought of them always makes me smile. When I was in elementary school, a long, long time ago, I worked as a student helper in the library. The librarian had a coffeepot set up with a bowl of sugar cubes. The other helpers and I liked to sneak a couple when we had the chance.

Moni, if you can't find them close by or on your travels, add a box to your next Amazon order when you have enough coming to get free shipping.

I do that with the 26 oz container of Au Jus powdered mix that Costco doesn't carry any more rather than search in every grocery for it ;)

Regional thing? Few Americans drink coffee or tea while holding a sugar cube in their teeth, but it's still done abroad. We're all about fast, fast, fast, and a packet of loose sugar dissolves faster in a cup of coffee or tea. The packet is also a sanitary way to provide sugar.

forgot to mention one of my most cherished items from LONG ago was a corsage made by a friend of my mother...it was for my sweet 16 birthday...16 sugar cubes wrapped in clear wrap on pink pipe cleaners and satin ribbon...it lasted for years (kept in a box) think I finally tossed it...(maybe 25-30 years later???) ummm maybe I should go on a search for them myself..my oldest dgd turns 16 this year...lol...

They were hard to find here, until I started looking in the "discount" stores that often cater to ethnic populations. My favourites are the ones made from raw sugar, and I prefer the cubes to the "dominos" (same amount of sugar, just a different shape LOL).

Right now I have a box of Clic brand white sugar cubes in my desk drawer (for my morning coffee at work). Listed as a product of Turkey. Decidedly not local, and certainly not organic. Maybe that is why I hide them in my desk drawer - ;).

Dances - actually, they are in the drawer so nobody touches my cubes, man. I have little tongs in there, how hard would it be to use those?

I don't use sugar in my hot drinks so never think of buying sugar cubes. My Mom used to use them. When my sister lived in Saudi Arabia she used to send the cutest little boxes of sugar cubes home. They were topped with little sugar flowers like violets and other little flowers. I went to a tea room in the summer in the county and they had fancy flower topped sugar cubes but not as nice as the ones my sister sent home.
