I bathe daily, but once a week, I shower to wash my hair - probably 20 minutes is about right.

Well we watch our granddaughter most weeks while her mom travels for her job. She takes an hour to shower. She is 18. Has long hair. Small body. I can't believe that it takes that long. Me I'm only in there about 10 minutes. My hubby too.

I've lived in my house for 35 years and never have had a shower. I must really smell by now, right? lol...

I take a bubblebath every night of my life, two on the days I wash my hair in a week. About 30-40 minutes ,always reading a book. I shower only on vacations.

Depending on what I have to do. Wash and condition hair, shave legs or just enjoy the warm water about 15 minutes, 20 max. Is she actually in the shower that long? I would say the hour she is spending is more doing makeup and hair. I can be ready start to finish in about 40 minutes if I want to.

Not more than 10 minutes in the shower. I used to take nice warm baths until the day I couldn't lift myself up from the tub and had to get on my knees to do it. Getting old is no fun.

One dd with long, curly, thick hair takes a good 30 minutes; I generally take 10-15, depending on how cold I am. I know they're going to strongly encourage us to limit our shower time here in ca, but those with longer and thicker hair will have a harder time doing that. The low-force shower heads mean it takes more time to thoroughly rinse one's hair!

I'd love to linger in the shower (especially when my bathroom is cold, as it has been recently), but I feel strongly about conserving water. So I get clean (in a fairly systematic fashion) and get out.

I take very short showers and turn off the water between soaping up and rinsing.....our county has a very severe water shortage.

An hour fiddling around in there, when someone else may have to pee???

I'm not sure. I would guess less than 15 minutes. That includes shaving my legs daily and using shampoo and conditioner. I'm going to time myself and see! Then I come out to a warm towel on a heated towel rack!!

There's at least one easy way to shorten a kid's too-long shower and avoid an argument. But it takes a bit of advance planning. If hours beforehand you lower the temperature setting on the water heater (and keep it lowered), you'll find that showers end sooner.

Or, start the dishwasher and the washing machine as the shower begins.

About 15 minutes unless I wash my hair, so add another five minutes a couple times a week. That's just the time spent under the water. I swear I fall asleep standing up in there. I let the hot water pound on the back of my neck and it relaxes me so much. I am always sleepy after a shower. I should get smart and take one at night! Drying my hair is a process and that takes 20 minutes, but I do it in my bedroom.

I had a big deep tub put in when I renovated the bathroom and I take about two baths per year. Takes a long time to fill it, but it does feel good to have a soak. Makes my skin dry, though. I often put body lotion on after a shower or bath and always face moisturizer.

I'm guessing ten or fifteen minutes in the shower, and fifteen more to dry off, lotion up, brush teeth, and get dressed. Five more if I'm going out.

I used to love baths but not any more.

Under the water maybe 10 minutes at most. Longer to brush teeth and do hair. Sounds like a huge amount of water is being wasted!

I shower every morning before I got to work. I think in total, I'm in the bathroom less than 10 minutes. Like you, a hot bubble bath is a whole other story!

I never take showers. I love a bath, but do not linger usually in it. Probably 10 minutes or so.

I wash my hair in the bathroom sink. I hate the feel of hair on my body, and I can keep most of it out of the sink drain.

I prefer a bath in my little jet tub -- fills in a flash and is so easy to rinse out with the hand spray.

If DH plans a to take a shower, I'll nip in to take one before him. (Then he will wipe down the tile and glass after he showers.) I doubt I take ten minutes actually IN the spray.

We have a heated tile floor in our master bath. Luxury!

I can't believe how long some of these showers are! I'm under the shower head 10 minutes MAX, and that's including shaving-the-legs time. Usually 6-7 minutes.

I'm paying for that water and paying for heating it.

Ten minutes if I don't wash my hair. Add 5 minutes for my hair.

For the past 6 months or so, I've been growing my hair out from really short. It's longer than chin length now, and I really notice a difference washing it. It sure takes longer now! I also have to condition it to keep it from tangling.

They're probably 10-12 minutes now.

I spend an average of 30 minutes to do everything I need to do to face the public. Shower time is the least time consumer: Its just long enough to wet down, lather up with soap and rinse off. 5 to 6 minutes. That includes a soapless hair rinse. Add 4 minutes on the days I do hair shampoo.

Man oh man, if I had a kid that spent 20 or 30 minutes running the water every day, he or she would be chipping in to pay our expensive water bill. The 3 month water bill I got today was for $192. I take MAYBE 10 minute showers. Every day. And every day, I shampoo.

snidely, there are a house full of people. Can't turn it down. And there's more to parenting than making him do anything. I tend to teach my son the right and wrong way to do things (and the whys), then let him choose. Such is my life! I'm not going to be there all the time to prod him along. It's better to let him screw up now, while he's young, and pay the consequences, much smaller than they would be later in life, than it would be to follow him around cleaning up his messes.

I would not allow a child to take very long showers.....my choice, not theirs....but I would never turn the temperature down nor would I run other water/electricity guzzling appliances at the same time.

It might be a good idea to let the child take the last shower, though!

Children probably need to be coerced to comply with family rules. Conserving water and electricity is important....kids need to learn that at an early age.

I don't wash my hair in the shower and I've never shaved in a shower as I have no body hair, lucky me. I take about ten minutes and leave and dress in my bedroom. I love my baths though and I've been known to stay there for an hour.

But, as parents, we need to be flexible within a good framework. If 20 minutes is within a reasonable time, and it looks like it is, I need to let him take a 20 minute shower. And adjust my attitude, not that it was all that bad to begin with; my question was borne out of curiosity. Actually, what he'd like to do is take it in 5 minutes. Every year, his school talks about conservation, he asks me to let him know when 5 minutes is up. Never really works, but maybe, if he keeps trying, he can get it shorter. And I never once told him to hurry up, thank you conscience! He already knows what I think, but that he came to that conclusion on his own, well then, all right!!!! You go dude.

That is so great, rob. I love it when the kids become the 'police ' in the family. My nephews were like that, reminding everyone to be smart about their water usage.

I have a question for the bath takers. How on earth do you stay warm during a long bath? Doesn't the water get cold?

I just add hot water when the water cools during my baths.

This is an interesting subject. I never thought about showering in this way, especially in the part of the country I live in where water is plentiful. I will say that when we visit the dry parts of the country (the west in general) I become acutely aware of the need to conserve water. I know that if I lived in California I would feel guilty every time I turned on the water. I should probably adjust my thinking and become more conservation minded no matter where I am.
Oh, I usually shower for 10 minutes and take a bath about twice a week in the winter only. I never take a bath in the summer.

I also had a son who took long showers and baths with a lot of water that were about an hour in length. I never said anything and I probably won't if he ever comes home again. He is in Germany now with no plans to return and I miss him enough to not complain about his wastefulness.

Rob, maybe it would help if he were aware of what he does in the shower. I had this conversation with a couple of friends once, and one of them had no clue what happened between entering the shower and leaving it. ;-)

I taught my kids to shampoo their hair first so it can rinse while they wash the rest of themselves from face to feet. Unless, of course, someone decides to repeat the whole process (though I don't know why they would except as an excuse to stay under the nice warm water), this results in a quick, efficient shower.

I usually take short showers, between 5 and 7 minutes. I wet my hair, put in shampoo, rinse it out, put in conditioner, let it set while I wash my body and face and then rinse off everything. I don't like lingering unless I'm cold or feel like I need some comforting. I also don't shower every day as a rule unless I get sweaty or dirty. Every other day seems better for my skin and hair.

He stands in there for five minutes with the hot water pouring over him, enjoying the steam... then he showers. He's very meticulous, making sure to do what most of us do, but adds fingernail brush to both hands and feet. That's probably another four or five minutes. He just likes water, I think. He never gets to swim enough. Never. Water baby/fish boy.

Exactly, that was why I made the comment. It was tongue in cheek.

My kids are grown now, but I always took it as a challenge to find ways to try to outsmart them. To avoid issuing commands but still influence their behavior. As kids get older, who can outsmart whom changes to the opposite direction. As it should.

Our DS and DGS love, love, love *water*. As little boys, each could spend an entire afternoon outdoors with a hose. DH, DS and DGS are all as comfortable in water as in air. It was unsurprising to discover that DS's birthfather's job in Vietnam had been underwater demolitions.

Adolescents are infamous for long showers. (And you don't need to know all that they do in that private space -- mental and physical 'decompression'.)

If nobody else in the family is being inconvenienced, I don't think 20 minutes is a no-no at that age. Old cartoons of a line of siblings waiting at the bathroom door are outdated. Few American families are that large today, and few have only one bathroom. I do get the water-waste issue, and that has to become a personal responsibility to work -- for water, electricity, whatever.

Wow, I'm amazed at some of the lengths of showers noted here! As someone else said, what a waste of water and money{{gwi:807}}. Especially water, a precious commodity. And, time, too I think.

Perhaps that's judgmental of me, but really? I jump in the shower, put shampoo in my hair, scrubbing around for about 15 seconds, wash the rest of me while the shower water is running over my head and rinsing it, put in a little conditioner and rub around, and rinse it. I don't find that it helps to leave conditioner in as they say to, so I just put it on and rinse it and my body with the hand held sprayer and I'm done.

I haven't timed it, but I would guess I am in and out of the shower in 5 to 6 minutes. And I am perfectly clean, I assure you!
