So? That's not enough room. I would never be that close.

Edited to say, you must speed up and stop SLOWLY. There's a reason for that. If you get stuck and give it the gas to get free, you might skid. You might hit ice and skid. You might need to get up a hill and need to gain speed before you get there. There are so many reasons that even stopping, you shouldn't be close.

From the AAA website:

-Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. DonâÂÂt try to get moving in a hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.

-Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning ��" nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.

-The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.

-Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold breaking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.
-DonâÂÂt stop if you can avoid it. ThereâÂÂs a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.
-DonâÂÂt power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible.

-DonâÂÂt stop going up a hill. ThereâÂÂs nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.

-Stay home. If you really donâÂÂt have to go out, donâÂÂt. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. DonâÂÂt tempt fate: If you donâÂÂt have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.

I always cringe seeing people taking pictures while driving, especially in bad weather conditions. It's pretty common these days as people like to document everything.

Glad I don't live in a place that gets snow anymore, that's for sure.

They are probably going 5 mph and can be that close. Looks miserable.

rob, cause we live in area where there is very little snow. And driving is NOT like experienced snow drivers.

Plus my area was not supposed to get the amt that we are getting. Supposed to be a light dusting, so everyone went to work, school, then it happened. Most than expected.

I'm jealous. Send some here! Our 60-some degree cold wave is gone and I wore shorts today which was nice, but I'd love to hunker down for a few days of snow. WE are supposed to get rain tonight and temps will drop again.

Neighbor that took the picture, was heading HOME, not to work. He's been on the road 3 hours and still hasn't made it and it's only a 4 mile drive from his workplace to home.

I don't know if this will show up or not... it's from TDOT's website. Check out how much red/black (clogged traffic) and yellow (ice/snow) there is from Birmingham, Atlanta, Chattanooga... eastward. The ! marks are accidents. Both Chattanooga and Knoxville are mountains. Feel sorry for those folks! I'd hate to drive on mountains in this. Hard enough on flat ground. There are likely more accdients, it's just TN accidents on our page.

I'm sure Glenda would love to make a snow angel but getting back up is not so easy! Glenda, it's my understanding that that pretty snow is really ice. I don't care how much experience we Northerners have with snow, no one can drive in ice!

well we just made the most snow covered state in the lower 48....yippee for mi!...

It is ice underneath the snow and that's what's making it so treacherous, and people not being able to make it home.
