While I agree that perhaps the pendulum has swung too far the other way at times, it was not too far back in history (and it still exists in parts of the world) where there was little accountability for those who hurt others with dangerous, poorly made, mislabeled, merchandise, or dangerous working conditions that caused injury and/or death.
For years, for instance, tobacco manufacturers denied a link between lung cancer and smoking and did not warn consumers, when there was evidence, strong evidence, that they were aware of the danger.

I do blame the purveyor of guns and a gun culture, and the 'friend' is far more likely to be shot by a family member than some 'deranged madman'.
