Trying to cover all my bases by posting the same message here as I just did on Computer Help forum.

I have a Dell Laptop Latitude D520 with Windows 7. It was bought for me last year and not new. For the longest time, the battery was staying 100% charged and now it's at 88% with the message plugged in, not charging.

I've changed the plug in area, but nothing has changed.

What's the operating difference between a new and replacement battery? Is it worth it to buy a replacement? Should I also be replacing the charger?

My 4 yr old laptop stopped holding a charge. Like you it would show less and less percentage of charge. I would run the battery down regularly and charge it fully again.

My previous laptop, I kept the battery in all the time and the battery wouldn't hold a charge at all. So I no longer keep the battery in.

I bought a replacement battery at Amazon for $30.....far cheaper than anywhere else.

It's not uncommon for the battery to do that. I have the same thing on my netbook. I ordered a replacement battery for mine. If you leave it plugged in all the time, try instead letting it drain down over half way from time to time.
I don't think your charger is bad probably just the battery.
If you use the laptop portable and need that then you will need a new battery. If you only use it in one place and don't use the battery then it's really up to you whether you get a replacement.
If that's the case you can remove the battery and just leave it plugged in like a desktop if you have that ability with that laptop.

I'm not an expert, and I live in southwest Ohio so my conditions are different, but I've had pretty good luck growing tomatoes in containers for almost 20 years. My advice would be to try Early Girls, preferably the bush ones, which are determinate, although the regular indeterminte ones would do. They're disease resistant and can produce a lot of tomatoes in two to three months. I would choose short, compact plants that aren't root bound and haven't produced fruit yet. Although they're juicier than paste tomatoes, I've used them as slicers as well as sauce tomatoes. (Many paste tomatoes have a tendency to develop BER if you don't give them even watering.) I would plant one per 18 gallons or two per 31 gallon container. Withe the bush type, you might be able to get away with two in 18 gallons or three in 31 gallons. I found them pretty forgiving and fairly good tasting. If you succeed, you might try something more adventurous next year.

One of my neighbors purchased a house that had been vacant for 7 years, and the garden not tended for many more. What she found was: A large area of blackberry thicket, out of which was growing and blooming 2 very old Madame Caroline Testout roses. They had climbed up a nearby plum tree to get light, and were also growing over the fence and onto the next door neighbor's roof of their one story house. A mature apricot tree right in the middle of the back yard - it was twisted and very old, but still bloomed and bore fruit. LOTS of volunteer trees - plums, eugenie, privet, and eucalyptus, to name a few. Also some huge pine trees on the perimeter, which had been there for ages. My garden was not abandoned, but little had been done to it for 20 years when we moved into our house. It had at least 50 surviving roses - most of the survivors were teas, hybrid wichuranas, or other really old roses. A couple of the teas had gotten huge - maybe 15 feet wide, and 8-9 feet tall. There were 5 surviving hybrid teas, but they had dwindled, and did not bloom (except for Cl La France, as noted below). The old old roses had gotten bigger, and bloomed a huge amount. Thornless (thank heavens!) blackberry had taken over an area at the back of the property about 20 ft square, and there was another area where volunteer fig and plum trees had made a sort of forest. That's where Cl La France had climbed up the trees, and was blooming and disporting itself in the canopy. Old bulbs were still coming up in the Spring, all over the garden. Jackie

tinan, I doubt that noise is as easily abated by plantings as you may think. CALTRANS engineers are experts and even they have a hard time abating sound. Sometimes sound-deflecting walls are built only to find the sound, instead of being deflected upwards, goes in unexpected directions and creates headaches for another neighborhood which previously had no problems at all. Land topography has more impact on noise deflection than anything else. If you walk along the Bodega Head trail, at certain sections the ocean noise is thunderous; yet 50' away without any change except for a shift 10' inland and a protruding cliffside edge, the wave noise drops by two-thirds. No trees or level change are involved at all; it is all topographic noise deflection. Take a side path below cliff level and suddenly you can't hear any ocean noise, everything is silent. Certainly trees "en masse" will deflect noise. But you'd have to own a half-acre lot to plant enough trees to mass thickly enough to create a viable deflection wall on a level property. Walk around a freeway underpass, and you'll probably find that in certain spots almost underneath the freeway (it needs to be solid, not the type with separate roadways) the car noises stop. Sometimes they merge into a deep booming noise that is more pressure than noise, a rather odd feeling. All of us live in a geographically hilly area. This means that cell phone reception gives carriers nightmares and that noise from our maze of freeways travels upwards and outwards in a variety of directions, funneled by geography and climate. I can occasionally hear train whistles from the Amtrak lines two miles west - but not always, only at certain times. If sound were a simple thing, I would ALWAYS be able to hear them - the tracks don't move, and neither does my house (unless there's a rupture in the Hayward Fault, LOL). But I can't, even though I know that the trains blow their whistles at the same crossing twenty times a day.

You do know that avocados are large trees, right? I've seen them in Mexico, 40-60' tall. The ones I've seen at fruit tree sales have been around 10-15' tall and they weren't large enough to make fruit. I'm in Houston and it's only been the last few years that varieties have been developed that will take our freezes (mid 20's, maybe to high teens), and our freezes only last a few days, then it's warm again. That said, there is a variety that is self-fertile now. But most aren't, and you need two trees. Some people here who grow them get one and a neighbor gets one, so one person's yard isn't completely taken over by one large tree. I found some info about growing them: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/homefruit/avocado/avocado2.html Here's a link to one of the local fruit tree sales, and you can look at the varieties that will grow in our mild climate. The self-fertile one is described in the listing. Since they need a warm climate most of the year, and full sun, I don't think you'd get any avocados at all, but they do make good house plants (and it's fun to dream!). So if you take the battery out, it keeps running and how?

I was wondering if the charger, which I keep plugged in, needs replacing, too?

I feel so silly not knowing the answers.

And is a replacement battery as reliable as a new one, or would you expect it to not last as long?

Ok Raven, I don't have WiFi, so laptop stays in one place.

I have DSL through AT&T so I'm guessing I could remove the battery. How is that an advantage? And how would I run down the battery or drain it from time to time? And again I'm asking how would that help?

Feeling so very uninformed. Thank you Jasdip and Raven.

I got my new replacement battery on EBay for $15 a year ago - of course, I don't know which vendor.

If it's working and you don't rely on battery life for unconnected use, there's no problem.

I agree with the suggestion to not leave laptops constantly plugged in. They should very regularly (once a week or so) be disconnected and fully run down before being recharged.

There are many cheap, third party (not original equipment) batteries on the market for laptops and smartphones and I would avoid them like a plague. That's why they're cheap, and it's what you typically find being sold by generic web and eBay sellers. The most likely component to catch fire in a device is the lithium battery, buying something cut-rate of unknown quality is a false economy.

Always look for brand name (OEM or OEM approved) batteries to be safe. For now, granlan, I think there's nothing you need do. If it will run with the battery out, do that when it no longer holds a charge. No need for concern.

You run down the battery by unplugging from the power and using it strictly from the battery. That's how a laptop is supposed to be used, you unplug it and carry it to your bedroom or recliner etc. During this time it is using the battery power. In your case just unplug it and use it in place running from the battery to drain it down.
It will depend on the quality of the replacement battery as to how well it holds up. I got mine from a battery supply store on eBay matching exactly what was on my existing battery. Since your laptop was used your battery could be a replacement.
You can remove the battery from the laptop and just plug the laptop into the power leaving the battery out of the equation. Mine are that way I don't know anything about yours to give you instructions.
You can try going to Google and search for the exact model of it and quite possibly find good information about your laptop.

You all have been so much help and I'm understanding the situation so much better. Such a relief to me to learn these things.

I have already seen the battery and it is a Dell and I had decided I'd be getting the same when I did need to purchase another. Not sure if the current battery is a used one or not; my dear brother-in-law found this laptop for me. I'm glad to have it after my new ASUS was stolen from my home last May; I sure was enjoying that thing.

I am not an advocate of removing the battery and using it on the charger alone. If you lose power, even for an instant, you can lose all saved settings in the computer, you may even have to reset the CMOS in rare circumstances but we are talking about Dell. You'll likely corrupt files and more. Leave the battery in. Even if it doesn't last long, it'll give you a chance to shut it down properly and possibly save headaches down the road.

The scenario you're describing cynic is no different than what happens with a desktop when power goes out. You may lose what's currently in progress or open files if changed, usually nothing else. Such problems can be avoided by saving work product files regularly and/or making sure autosave functions are turned on.

A surge can disrupt settings but a clean power cut out usually won't.
