Interesting facts about cats & dogs
Comments (26)We're sleep deprived. Thursday and Friday nights our Westie was up and down ten times from his bed at the foot of our bed (and ON our bed). He was trying to escape *some* kind of pain. He refused to eat Wednesday night. He's often gone without eating for three days, then is right as rain, but we planned to take him to the vet this morning -- he's never seemed in pain before! The vet opens at 8:30. About 4 a.m. Eliot stopped pacing and shaking and went quietly to sleep -- us too. I got up quietly this morning and made rice and chicken. Sure enough, Eliot came out and went right to his dish. I gave him a half cup of rice/chicken, then another half cup 30 minutes later. DH walked him and brought home the small stool he passed. We took Eliot and the stool to the vet. He'd passed a twist-tie! WHERE did he pick THAT up? We'll watch carefully for blood. The vet said we would have just watched and waited regardless -- no surgery. She said veterinary magazines run contests to show what dogs have swallowed, and that this is minor. I'm sure it didn't feel minor to Eliot! Early to bed for all of us tonight....See MoreFree Cats and Dogs Listings on Craigslist, etc.
Comments (6)I've seen and heard many, many stories of not only bait dogs and other bait animals, but fighting dogs, and stories of family pets that are kidnapped and TORTURED by conscienceless throwaway kids. Just google these subjects. I've attached a pic and a link to only a couple of many local stories in my area about stolen and tortured family pets. (I think if you click on the pic, the image will get bigger) I'm shocked at how many people I know personally that are clueless about how pervasive these horrors are. I understand that people don't want to have to read about or acknowledge the ugly elements of our OVERALL society, but a quote like the above that is circulated among such sheltered people will, hopefully, enlighten people to the point that they will be more protective of their pets -- the innocent, tortured victims of such ignorance. If you want proof of the validity of the above quote, google dog fighting and read all about it. There are dog fighting forums where these despicable people give each other tips, etc. - even on Yahoo. I personally cannot stomach it and, therefore, only read about it in detail once in a great while. The stories are haunting. Comments (12)I think most Dannon yogurt contains high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which is NOT good for any living creature, humans included. However your own homemade plain yogurt and/or any unsweetened, unflavored cultured yogurt (Stonyfields for instance) is very healthful and beneficial. Yogurt contains pro-biotics which are the beneficial bacterial found in the intestines. Particularly as we and our dogs age we often do not produce enough of these good bacteria that aid digestion. Also after taking antibiotics it is good to replenish the pro-biotic supply because the antibiotics kill not only bad bacteria but also the good ones. My little sheltie used to like yogurt but she's gone now and my collie does not like yogurt. Therefore I supplement his food with pro-biotics bought in the vitamin/supplement aisle. Additionally yogurt, like the milk it is cultured from, is a nearly complete food and is healthful for dogs and people. It is healthful for cats too, providing they do not have a lactose intolerance. None of my cats ever had this problem but I understand many do, as do most persons of Asian descent. Enjoy your yogurt making. My husband used to make our own buttermilk which was excellent!...See MoreCats, and ??dogs?? who suck..
Comments (5)I understood that it's a myth that cats separated from their mothers too early will exhibit this kneading/sucking behavior. We kept a mother cat and 4 of her kittens(sigh) and they were nursing a looooong time until Millymoo indicated she'd had enough. They were still trying to nurse at the 6.month mark when we took them all to get neutered. Two of 4, now 10 years old, love to knead and suck on the corner of a blanket. No trauma of being taken from mum too early-think they just like to do it. We had a mini schnauzer too a few years back who loved to suck/chew on the edge of her ratty blanket. She'd twist it up underneath herself and fall asleep with the corner in her mouth. It might've been a security issue for her as she'd been with 2 other families before ours but her blanket had been with her since puppyhood I was told....See MoreChi
