UPDATE on my son in Atlanta

This is from my daughter-in-law: UPDATE... Bill is now moving.... He's driving slow but he's moving trying to avoid the black ice.... Could be within the hour he will be home... I will keep y'all posted!!! Thank you for all of your prayers, calls, texts, & FB messages!! Love you all I will let you know!!!

and another update:

Another update Bill can't make it up the main hill.. So he's now on foot..... But he's close.. Roads are full of snow and ice still no getting out of this neighborhood..

I live north of Atlanta and the roads were very treacherous yesterday everywhere. I know as we were out in that mess about 10:30 am yesterday and it just got worse and worse. What normally would have been a 10 minute ride to our home took us a long dangerous 30 minutes. No we were not on a freeway but it was a main thoroughfare, Just after the snow started and freezing. Roads were horrible no sanding or salting had been done and we saw 2 wrecks on the way home. Once there we learned that schools were letting out and we worried about our grand daughter who had driven to school and there was no way she would let her grandpa come get her. Leave her car at school, no way she said. She would rather have an accident then have the car in a safe place. Do kids ever learn maybe when she is my age. lol But she did make it to our house safely. Today it is still icy on our street and she is walking to a friends house to go sledding. Kids.
I hope your son makes it home safe and sound. Sun is out now , sky is blue but it is still cold outside. They say it will melt and then refreeze overnight.
I hope the students and educators who had to sleep at school overnight are now able to leave. Get home safely to their families and loved ones.
My great niece (7) rides with a carpool parent and what normally takes them 10 minutes took them 5 HOURS to get to her home Good job carpool driver.
Let the melting begin.

I know, believe me, this whole thing is a horrible nightmare. He was at an intake location, where all convicted go to be 'processed', essentially determine where they'll serve their sentence. If they have a death penalty conviction they automatically go to the Pen, everyone else has to be assessed. There is a level, 1-5 that they're assigned. It's based on length of sentence, crime, previous convictions, drug/alcohol, etc. Jon ranked at a 2, he'd be a 1, but he was sent in for probation violation (which is being appealed, because he DID comply with all his terms of probation). Anyway, so he's level 2, minimum security. Most of the minimum security prisons in Oregon are located in Salem, as is the Pen. I am not sure why he's at the Pen, which is multiple security now, I always thought it was only maximum security, but was told by the staff there it was multiple. I went today to see if I could visit him, but was told I was not approved yet. WTF?? Jon told me the last time I was able to speak to him that he'd gotten his GF and I on his visitor list. Apparently, it's not yet approved. And no phone calls yet because, again...his phone list has not been approved, even though he'd been able to call us any time he had day room use up until middle of last week. Since then he's been moved and we can't contact him. I broke down several times today because I FEEL his sadness. He has been cut off from us for nearly a week, this is exactly OPPOSITE of what his counsellor said was needed for him. So tomorrow I'm going to call his counsellor, his attorney and anyone else I can to get word to him that we're fighting to see or talk to him. I need answers as to why my boy is where he's at, and what the plan is for him. I can't even begin to describe how disgusted I am and feel we've been lied to (I don't think that's the case, but I'm so upset!) and I have never, ever felt so helpless in my life. I'm not used to begin completely shut off...but this is prison, and it's a major security issue, but it seems so out of context for us. Our son is being so victimized by this, and it's tearing up our family so much. I can't imagine what it would be like for the family of someone who is facing years in prison. We're at 2 1/2 months of his 13 month sentence...it feels like it's been years. My eldest DD is working with the District Attorney's office and had a recent encounter in court with the judge who'd sentenced my son. Apparently judge has got a reputation as being difficult and tends to be more lenient toward women than men. She's kicked people out of her courtroom because she didn't feel they were properly attired (even victims assistant advocates!) or behaving the way she felt they should. DD said that some of the victims her office represents have filed official complaints against this judge. So, we figured that my son had 2 strikes against him right up front...he went to court that day wearing skinny jeans (as he has done for years), sneakers and a clean T-shirt with an overshirt. Said judge does not like that look apparently. Had he worn a suit & tie I'm sure she wouldn't have been so harsh. Well, we're still going to work on that appeal and use that judges complaints in the request for expungement.

We had to lose a mural too -- bought a house with a tea party mural - perfect for a house with a couple of girls, but we have two boys. We wound up wallpapering, so we did sand the wall. We had to remove texture more than paint. Since you are planning on painting, and assuming the walls have some texture on them, I would paint on one coat of tinted primer and see if you can see ridges or brush strokes through the primer. If you do, you ony need to sand to break those down, not totally remove them, so they blend in with the wall's texture. If you have done a lot of sanding you will definitely want a second coat of primer. If not, you can decide whether you want a second coat of primer. If the wall has no texture at all, then I would give it a light sanding first, then prime. If the grey goes with the blue in his room, I'd go with the one he likes. If you have a large open are of carpet, you can put a rug on top of it. If not, it will fade away visually -- it isn't going to be what he or likely anyone else is really looking at.

My husband's primary care physician has had a long time interest is holistic and nutritional medicine and he incorporates that into his Internal Medical Practice. After my husband's diagnosis, he spent countless hours educating us about how a change in diet along with other more natural remedies can work in tandem with modern medicine (to optimize the best results possible). In other words, we follow the directives of our oncologist exactly as prescribed, but use diet and holistic medicine to help control some of the side effects of the treatments like rebuilding the immune system, stomach problems, energy levels and so on. And it works! When my husband started seeing him, the doctor put him on a diet that focus's on the G-Bomb foods, restricted sugars and asked him to avoid as much animal protein as possible as it's very hard on the kidneys. He also asked him to eat as much organic food as possible (even when he eats meat) to avoid the pesticides, antibiotics and other contaminants. Fish is the preferred protein if meat is consumed but only non farmed ocean fish like Alaskan Salmon. He's also supposed to (but doesn't always) avoid flour and other processed foods. Russian black bread is my husband's weakness so that's a tough one. LOL I would say that 85% of everything we do food wise now is home made from natural and organic foods and only 5% of what he eats is an animal based product. Meat he can live without but other than switching to Organic, milk was also something where he couldn't compromise. There is famous doctor who's work our doctor was familiar with before he became popular. Even though I'm not into the hype of the popular doctor, parts of his program or his marketing stradegy, his website still has lots of articles and information about how nutrition and diet affects the body. And how it can help to keep someone from getting sick. You may have heard of him too, Dr. Joel Furhman. The problem I think is that people perceive that good diet will "cure" cancer, but that's not the case. And people think cure the cancer and it's over, but that's not the case either. Because their immune system is wiped out, many people with cancer become ill, even gravely ill with other ailments after the cancer is gone. The diet helps the body to rebuild the immune system and decrease the chance of secondary disease. From July 2012 to Mid 2013 my husband was on the strong chemo treatments and finally went into remission in June 2013. However, to keep the myeloma from returning, he was put on a mild but continuous chemo regiment for life. He started the diet shortly after starting chemo in 2012 and has not been sick with as much as a cold since 2013. If he slacks from the diet for any length of time, he says he can feel his energy drop and system weaken. G-Bombs are only part of the equation as there are lots of other foods that are are important too, Kale for example which is growing in popularity, broccoli and avacados to name a few. There's a ton of information on Dr. Fuhrman's site. Sending prayers and good thoughts that he gets home soon, gets to have a hot bath, hot chocolate, and a well deserved rest after going through all that!!! (And you too, Lana, sometimes Moms go through just as much during crises).

He's home!! How anyone can look this good after almost 24 hrs. stuck in a car and then walking over a mile to finally reach home is a miracle!!! :)

Yes Patti, my baby boy is 6'5" and wears a size 15 shoe. Maybe those big feet helped him walk safer than most.. kinda like your own snow shoes. haha

Very thankful to see your update, letting us know he made it home safely. I pray everyone else will soon get home safely too, especially those poor children stuck on schoolbusses and in the schools.

I've seen one truck and one ambulance go down our road very slowly.

This is on the national news. I'm confused. Why wasn't there a weather advisory, telling people to stay home?

Our DS and family in Chicago had two days of school closings Monday and Tuesday.

is that strong enough? I hate to worry about my child and not being able to help him, so I hear ya. Drives me crazy. Especially when I can't get to where (what I edited) he is. I have been watching and wondering. Glad to be relieved for you.

I have been following and praying for a good update and so happy to see he made it home safely. Now I hope his truck is ok and still there when he can get back to it.

When a storm like that is totally unexpected it is hard for any area to prepare for it. If you are in a target area then yes they can give you a heads up for preparing and alerts. This thing just went out of the range of the forecasts.
Even my family down in Louisiana have been really hard hit with the serious ice. The power company was letting it's customers know there could be power outages, several hundred were already with out power. The ice just weights down the lines and trees to the breaking point. It just is not common in those areas to deal with these abnormal situations.

Yes, Mother Nature does send us surprises sometimes. The area affected was blindsided.

I just heard in CNN that the mayor and Gov. said the National Weather Service misled them. Snow was predicted to be 1 to 2 inches and they got 2.6 inches. Atlanta doesn't have enough equipment to spread salt on all the freeways in advance of the snow. CNN also said it would take a week to clear all the abandoned cars from the freeways. A lot of folks ran out of gas.

And I saw the Today Show weatherman Al Roker say that there had been warnings since Monday of that storm in Atlanta. He adamantly said the governor and mayor clearly had decided to gamble and not spend the money to pre treat roads and hills. A warning of 1-2 inches that in reality becomes 2.6 inches is pretty darn close to accurate in weather forecasting.

wondered why so many got caught out! boy I'd have a thing or 2 to say to the governor...
our emergency crews couldn't salt (it would melt and make ice) but plowed as best as they could here in detroit....

He's a sight for sore eyes! Glad he's home.

The weather forecasts are wrong at least as often as they're right. And the newscasts just pour it on when there's anything predicted. "They" are predicting a MAJOR snow event in the East for Tuesday or Wednesday of next week...I'm not even sure there is a way to predict that far ahead!

SheliaJoyce, I agree 100%!!! And the Weather Channel is saying the same thing about their accuracy of their reporting.

SHAME on the mayor for throwing *all* the meteorologists under the bus like that. What happened to people taking responsibility for their own poor choices, especially when those poor choices cause so much human sufferinng?
