Atlanta storm..my son stuck on hwy.

Many of you may have seen or heard about the ice and snow storm that hit Atlanta. My son is still not home and he's been trying since 2:30PM yesterday.

Hundreds have left their cars parked, ran out of gas, and started walking. My Bill still has gas, some gloves and a pea coat.

Feeling worried and so helpless. I'm asking for some good thoughts for him and all those suffering out there.

Oh, I'm sorry for your worry, granlan. Is he near town or stuck somewhere out of town? Surely the ghp is out patroling? I'll certainly say a prayer for him.

I was just looking at this slide show of the impact of snow and ice on roads in many parts of the south. What a nasty situation! I'm glad your son wasn't involved in a crash, at least. Hope he's able to get out of there soon.

I live in a beautiful 160-year-old home in historic Warrenton, NC, an hour north of Raleigh. It's a Greek Revival & Italianate southern antebellum home by renowned architect Jacob Holt. I cherish every inch inside and out! The grounds are covered with enormous oaks and pecans. I'm originally from northern Virginia/Maryland (DC, Stafford, Quantico). George, Jerreth certainly is having a challenging week. It sounds like the power might make it back on before you get home. What wonderful friends y'all have.....loaning Jerreth the RV with its' generator. I'm glad Jerreth is going to be able to save the frozen food. And, putting the refrigerated food in the 5-gallon buckets was a brilliant idea. That's a long way to haul water. So, I guess the two of them are building some serious muscle tissue.....and they don't even have to drive to "the gym" to do it. I know that you are doing terrific work at the Bible Institute and you are fortunate to have a spouse who shares your faith and supports your efforts. It can't be fun to be the one who is "home alone" at this time of year with the risk of ice storms, and I admire her so much for being willing to do it. You said that this is one of the "prices" which you wish y'all didn't have to pay, and I understand that, but we don't really get to choose the price we pay or the challenges we face. I know that Jerreth will come through this challenging period just fine and I suspect she won't even "rub it in" too much that you were off in sunny Mexico doing the work of the Lord while she was here dealing with the mixed blessing of having frozen moisture fall. Look at it this way: The good news, George, is that while you are away in Mexico, all your trees got watered. The bad news is that they got iced too. Linda, there are other ways to lose your livelihood other than being a commercial fisherman should a storm take out several thousand recreational boats here in my town. Many ways. Just a few from the top of my head...marine mechanics, shipwrights, fiberglass specialists, electronics sales/installation/service, rigging specialists, canvas specialties (several types), upholstery specialists, stainless steel fabricators, crane owners & operators, marina owners, dockmasters, deck hands, fuel, pump-out service companies, painters, those who do the shrink-wrapping for winter storage, Tow Boat US franchise owners & their employees, places like West Marine & the marine salvage yard suffer from greatly reduced sales when the boats are not being used, restaurants & their employees (if boaters are not using their boats they aren't in town needing food), hotels, caterers (we have many very large yachts here all summer. They come up from the Caribbean to, hopefully, avoid hurricanes & utilize local caterers every week.), & retail in general. Boaters' purchases are the mainstay of our downtown area. Recreational boating is big business in the Great Lakes area also as it is all along the country's coasts (west, Gulf, & east). People earn their livelihoods in other ways besides farming. And those other livelihoods also ripple through the entire economy. Despite their farms the mid-west is suffering economically right now. So are Connecticut & Rhode Island. IMO, every job we have in America is important...not just farmers. My town lives or dies by the health of our local marine industries that includes oyster bed farmers, scallop divers, commercial fisherman (Stonington, our government jurisdiction, has the last commercial fishing fleet in CT.), sport fishing charter boats, & yes...recreational boaters and all those who support the marine industry that I noted above. The world's largest marine museum is located in Mystic for a reason. As I've said before, Mystic's life blood is the sea.

In Jan. I'd gone on a trip to Mobile with a couple friends to a big flea market there. Before coming home we drove to Dauphin Island - we couldn't believe how badly they'd been hit. I talked with a lady at a convenience store there who'd had a paper route on the island and after the hurricane over half her route was gone, not only the houses, but the property itself was underwater in the Gulf. That's why most of these poor people are fighting with the insurance companies, the property/land itself is gone. As for the MS coast - it was truly difficult to grasp how massive the devastation was, and still is, there. When you only see a picture or camera view of one area, you don't really have any point of reference or landmark to orient yourself as to what area you're looking at. Then you get there, and you slowly begin to grasp the magnitude of it because there ARE NO landmarks left. The beaches themselves are slowly recovering, and of course most of the casinos are back, but as you said all the beautiful old homes are gone, all the businesses & restaurants are gone - amazing to me was that a few of the signs remained, but the actual buildings were levelled. A few of the hotels have come back, but most are either gone or still in shambles. Most all the debris has been cleared away, but it's just such an eerie feeling to be able to see inland for blocks from Hwy 90. As I said, we were returning from Mobile and got on 90 there in Biloxi (the Ocean Beach bridge is, or was at that time, still out) - my friend said the devastation was even worse further west toward Long Beach, but I had had all I could take by the time we reached Hwy 49 in Gulfport - I was in tears and trying to drive, so I headed up 49 toward home. As for my life history (a little of it I was telling PF about on the 'paint dipping' post)....I'll attempt to make a VERY long story short. I was born in Oakland, CA (biological father in the Navy), mom divorced then remarried another Navy man (my step-dad) who got transferred to Pensacola when I was 2. My step-dad retired there, so I lived there from age 2 to 14. At 14 my mom passed away from cancer and I went to live with my older sis whose (now ex)husband had been transferred to Jackson for his job. From there I moved back to FL briefly, met my ex-husband, moved with him to New Orleans, then San Diego, San Francisco, WA state (where he was originally from) and I finally decided to come back home (after 5 yrs. of h*ll)-fully intending to go back to FL. I stopped in MS to visit my sis and my brother (who had since also moved there from FL) and ended up staying there for the past 17 years. I finally got divorced from my ex and eventually found the love of my life (corny,I know)- his mom was born and raised in MS. He grew up in FL too from a Navy family and come to find out, had things been just a little different we probably would've at least gone to high school together. His father was just getting transferred out of Pensacola as mine was being transferred in. And, of course, you already know the reason for the GA move. When I first moved to MS, everyone told me, "If you stay 6 months, you'll never leave". I took it as you wouldn't 'want' to leave - little did I realize that the truth was that you can't AFFORD to leave! It's worse now because the cost of everything is going up, but wages there aren't. After 15 years of struggling there, we figured a change couldn't hurt. Besides, my brother and his family are now back in Jacksonville, so I'm closer to them and my oldest son is in the Marine Corps in NC so I'm closer to him now, too. My sis isn't happy about the whole thing since she's still in MS, but if things work out here, I'm gonna get her moved here eventually! LOL OMG... this is turning into a novel...DH took my 2 youngest to the dentist for me today so it's been quiet and I didn't realize how much I'd rambled on...Sorry - I warned PF about this earlier! :) I need to get some work done before they get back.

Thank you ladies. Bill is on the busy freeway that leads into and from the airport. No one is moving; however, I've learned he was able to get his car off to the side of the road.

Roads still gridlocked. :(

We flew in and out of Atlanta on Monday. The airport was so busy. I wondered what it looked like yesterday? No workers, stranded passengers? I'm glad we are home warm and safe. Hoping life soon gets back to normal in the south.

Hope the mess is cleaned up soon and your son gets home safely. I can't imagine being stuck in a car that long.

Praying your son gets home safely. Things are still an awful mess down here. Kids are still stranded on school busses where they spent the night, other kids are still stranded in schools. The National Guard is helping out. Interstate is like a huge parking lot. Many people abandoned their cars and started walking to try to find a place of shelter. Although it is now sunny, the extremely cold temps will prevent this ice from melting. People are still being told to stay home, off the roads.

Wow, I had no idea how bad it was until I saw the news. As badly as I feel for your son, I really feel awful for the kids who were/are? stuck on a school bus! I can't imagine how they'll clear this up while it's still icy--good thing others are smarter than I am, as I'm sure they'll figure this out soon!

I hope you have some good news for us the next time you post. It sounds like your son is stuck on I-75. That's a busy area in the best of conditions. Sure would hate to see it now. Saying a prayer for Bill and an extra one for you!

This is from my daughter-in-law: UPDATE... Bill is now moving.... He's driving slow but he's moving trying to avoid the black ice.... Could be within the hour he will be home... I will keep y'all posted!!! Thank you for all of your prayers, calls, texts, & FB messages!! Love you all I will let you know!!!

I'm still thinking about all those kids stuck on a bus or at schools. Praying others start receiving news about going home.

one more update:

Another update Bill can't make it up the main hill.. So he's now on foot..... But he's close.. Roads are full of snow and ice still no getting out of this neighborhood..

Where in the Atlanta area does you son Live? I live north in Marietta. All the freeways were gridlocked. Still were early this morning. I saw on our news that trucks were on the sides of the freeways, some school buses too. Many cars abandoned everywhere on the freeways. I know at the beginning of the storm we were out in it coming from a doctors appointment. As soon as the snow started to stick about 10. we left for home. Growing up in Ohio my husband knew how to drive in this type of weather Others not. Fast driving was a major problem. People in a hurry to get home. All the schools and business letting out at the same time also made the problem worse. Most of the roads had not been pretreated. That would have made a big difference. Wet roads suddenly turned to icy spots immediately. Very scary driving but if you were slow enough you could control their vehicles.
We have so many freeways here in the Atlanta area I75 runs north and south I285 goes around the city of Atlanta, I85 goes east to west and I20 goes also East to west.

Mary, my son lives in Woodstock so he's not far from you.

Last October, he accepted a position as manager at a Wal Mart store near the big airport so this started a long commute for him. He wanted the challenge even though he's managed other stores. Up until yesterday, he said he didn't mind the commute since he loves the store and "his people".
