A blast from the past!!! but paczki for me are the little dough balls that my grandmother made. She'd bake the balls of dough first, then she'd put them in a pan of melted butter and add cottage cheese for serving. Haven't had them since I was a kid, but can still remember exactly what the looked, smelled, and tasted like! :)

* actually, she both baked and boiled the balls of dough because it gave them a fresh bagel texture! cannot remember which she did first, but suspect boil. THEN she'd put them in melted butter w/ cottage cheese. :)

Last year was the first time I'd ever had one. I hear them advertised quite often on my local tv station. Wish I had a lemon one right now, but I'd settle for any flavor.

Chicago's Polish population is supprosedly greater than any city outside of Warsaw, Poland. Our DIL is fourth generation Polish-American, with a huge extended family in the city. There are big discussions about which place has the best bakery goods, and which has the best imported mushrooms, sausages (multiple varieties), etc. DIL's sister astounded TSA once as she was flying home to SLC; one suitcase was entirely filled with Polish sausages.

I can't really tell the difference between paczki and bismarcks; they're all 'jelly donuts' to me. (I like the custard filling.)

They sound good to me, and suspect I'd like the lemon filled a lot.

My mother in law made something called fritule, but they don't look quite the same. Deep fried but not with a center filling, they had lemon zest and sometimes chopped date throughout the dough.

When her sister made them, DH and his siblings called them 'grease balls'....she wasn't quite the same good cook as my MIL ;)

Yum! We have a Polish Bakery near by. In fact, DS works for them! Yes, basically, they are Polish donuts, but don't let a Polish person hear you say that! Traditionally they are filled with a rose filling, prune, plain (my favorite) and I can't remember what else. Last year, DS was up for over 24 hours frying them for Fat Tuesday! He started Monday, and got off Tuesday morning. They have a line starting extremely early on Fat Tuesday that lasts all day long. The bakery brings in someone to play the button box (accordian) playing the Polish polkas. They even have a huge tent set up with heaters in it for the line to wind thru. They also hold a Paczki Ball each year. DH is second generation Polish American.

Fat (Shrove) Tuesday is coming up fast - February 17th. and the stores and bakeries will be putting out the PÃÂczki. I like mine unfilled, too - just like my Grandmothers on both sides made every year. When they're made well, they're a really delicious treat. Fortunately, we have a fairly large ethnic population here, so even though there might not be a lot of designated bakeries, etc., the grocery stores carry many of the goodies we remember from childhood.

I had to look them up on gppgle and I promise you I would love them. I gained 30 pounds doing chemo eating doughnuts...The one thing I could eat and keep down was doughnuts and my husband bought them for me every time we went to chemo.

They are very popular in Windsor on Shrove Tuesday or "punchki day" as it is often known to be called. If you don't buy them first thing in the morning or order them ahead you would be lucky to find one after that because they are sold out everywhere.

The grocery stores here carry them, too. And cherryfizz is right. Paczki is pronounced Poounchki. At least that is as close as I can come to spelling it phonetically! Or maybe Poonchki.

we saw some the other day at Walmart and seemed early for the Detroit area...we, too have a large polish community...haven't had any though for years...I loved the custard filled ones as well...
