THIRD Round of Polar Vortex Coming

Looks like schools may be closed again Monday and Tuesday. Once again the highs are expected to be below zero (-11 on Monday) with wind chills in the -30s and -40s. This has been unbelievable--goes on and on and on. I am feeling so much cabin fever; really feeling depressed. On the rare days where it is not freezing cold it is snowing and icy. You just can't do anything or go anywhere--super dangerous even to leave the house much less drive. I also heard that it may continue through February. Have never experienced anything like this winter's deep freeze, although I've living in MN 25 years.

I feel your pain. It's been a long time since we've had a winter like this. DH works for the local highway shop. He hasn't had a weekend off since before Thanksgiving. The only days off were a couple of vacation days. He did that only to get some down time for himself. He's out again today. Hopefully, spring will come early this year and we won't have a repeat of last year when it snowed into May.

Here in Long Island NY it's Sunday , 16 degrees at 8 am and not likely to go any higher today. I walked to the store this morning for dog food but I was okay because I dressed in layers and boots. I'm getting stir crazy/ cabin fever and I'm sick of washing sidewalk salt off my floors every time I come in. My dog Molly and I will stay in today, watch TV and eat snacks.

We haven't gotten above freezing in the last week but today, tomorrow and Monday are going to be in the 40s so we're out trying to get everything in the yard winterized. It is a few weeks early for it to be this cold here but not all that unusual. I have been doing my potted roses on Thanksgiving weekend for the last few years. So this hard freeze is about 2 weeks a head of schedule. I have to admit that enormous lake effect snow storm was strange and uncommon. I think it would be for any year. I wish there was some way of shipping all that stored moisture to all our rose friends in the South West that need the water! Just fill up some refrigerated big rigs and head West!?

Live-Wire-Oak, I thank you for your post. I finally do get it at last that it does not matter if the white is perfect but what matters is how everything in the kitchen goes well together giving that elegant pretty look. The recent kitchens posted made me realize this and the new reveals came at just the right time. The KD and I talked when he came by for his sample doors and he had more changes he made but I told him I did not have time to go over them if I had to order only today before the price went up. I needed to do my work as I like to get done right away what is given to me to please my clients. He agreed that if I could not decide which white door but I still loved the Shiloh Flat Panel beaded inset cabinets, then I should wait and pick out my counter first and then decide how the counter, floors and cabinets look altogether. Apparently each change takes him hours as he does it manually. I explained to him that I had told you to leave everything the way it was but take away the blind cabinet and kept the Lazy Susans. He told me he was trying to make the new kitchen better with other cabinets a little bigger but he sees I did tell him that. He is sorry he heard me tell him a 36" opening and saw all my emails and pictures of the refrigerator I wanted but he remembered the one I had was 33" wide so he wanted it to look build-in so drew the lesser space. I felt bad since he looked like he was going to cry and I told him, timing was so wrong and the pressuring was not good for me and if he gave me the designs right way a few months ago, we could have worked together to tweak it to be what I wanted and then had more time to pick out the right white door and counter but I am too busy to do it right now as my clients are my priority at the moment. I guess I would be more comfortable sitting in front of a computer with a designer making changes to show how it affects my room and my budget. I am that much closer to having my new kitchen with new floors as soon as my tax season ends. I am now finally seeing the forest and not lost in the trees. I did reread all the posts above many times and plan to before looking again after tax season. I still love the Shiloh beaded Inset door in the flat panel. I remember when I picked out my home office desk about 19 years ago. I walked in the store and fell in love with the beautiful Scandinavian teak desk that had a big rounded edge in the front to have more room to go over paperwork with clients. I did not like the price but was told I could get a cherry veneer. I ordered it on the spot and I still love it. When I chose my home, I had looked at 10 houses and disliked them all. When I was faxed the layout of my townhouse, I loved it. When I finally decided to be open to a townhouse, I loved the outside as they all look a little different where I live. I loved the inside layout and the way the home office is separate from the rest of the house. I loved how clients did not walk through my living area and have a bathroom to use in the home office area. I loved my private back yard with the privacy fence and woods in the back. I loved the location and how it was only 6 miles from where I was living and near so many highways but still country like. I went home to measure everything and came back the next day to be sure everything would fit. I then knew this is where I wanted to live and I am still happy here even after over 16 years. BUT when I chose paint and floors, I could not see how it would look as I could only see a small sample and I have been needing help. I get lost in the trees like you said which is so true! I was able to pick the BM Bone White color on the wall as a painting designer on the paint forum of Garden Web told me it only looked dark as I had a big spot on a big white wall and it was actually very light and peaceful and I should just go with it. I then thought, I would listen and I love my wall color. I am finally seeing that once everything goes well together, I will be happy and the perfect shade of white does not exist. I just want someone that listens to me and I guess maybe I need to communicate better what I want since I am a number's person and not a spatial person. The kitchen designer told me when I am ready, he is still willing to work with me if I want to call him and gave me another card. I felt bad since he thought I was buying today but I wish he would have realized that I needed to pick out a counter to tell which door color would be for me and he should have emailed me the new changes to have time to go over them to be sure I liked them. I should have not let myself be pressured and told him that it does not matter if there will be a price increase, now is not the right time as it takes me awhile to go through the process of finding what I want. This forum made me realize it was the whole picture I needed to see and not the individual pieces that would make my kitchen come together. I just wish I had room for an island but I wanted to live where I live and you get so much less for the money. I just reread my post and I can't believe how long it is. I type over 100 words a minute on a big screen computer and I eat my meals as I post. I am eating dinner now before getting back to work. I will leave it as I want to be able to go back and read these posts over and over again before I get back to choosing my kitchen when tax season ends. Thank you!

Well aren't you all sweet and supportive and the best cure for garden grumpiness ever? I knew you'd understand, even if you don't necessarily agree. Great rose pictures MiGreenThumb & Rebecca, which show what could be possible for the season. BraveRichard - the kind of flush you describe is what I kept waiting for all year, and trust me if I'd had it I'd be chortling with beemish glee at the extended weather. It's just that the entire gardening year has been perpetually positively pathetic, which leaves me nothing to do in the garden but come up with weird word patterns. Oh yes, and grump. I still do enjoy the weather when I'm not in the garden, and I have to appreciate the weather for weather as Towandaaz and Kentucky Rose and Seil have done, and not worry too much about what the garden isn't doing. You're right that four seasons (particularly fall) are exciting, Mariannese, Marlorena, and Adrian - and you are to be commended for coming to appreciate the season from Europe in relatively untraveled places like Wisconsin and Nebraska. Time for more long walks with leaf scuffing, even if it has to be barefoot. LIke Summers I have plenty to do in the garden, but it's not like it was spectacular when I was doing all I could to baby it along anyway this year. So OK, that means roses - you're on your own guys! One more day of bulb planting to go, then it's leaf bag blankets and off to bed for the winter, I don't care if you're not sleepy and it's only half past fall in feeling. It's long past Bedtime for Bonanza, and Curtains for Camelot. And oooh, what a wonderful excuse to be inside on a lovely fall day - cooking like Sultry Jasmine Nights or baking like Rebecca! Those pies are inspirational, and they take advantage of the bounty of someone else's garden. Jim and Sheila and I will be over with our mulled cider to go with your pies! I used to do all kinds of seeds under lights starting in January, but I found it cut into my down time too much. I still think I might try hybridizing and doing seedlings for fun when I retire, but that doesn't sound like it'll be any time soon. Buford, I'm pretty sure you had it worse for rain than we did all year, and Southern California is worse than all of us with no relief in sight! Besides, I get the handy excuse that Cindi in KS stole all our rain during October (smile), and she didn't even want all of it! Amazing how a drought window can have pockets of 'feast or famine' this close together. I can complain about a bad year but have a good reason for optimism in the coming year that simply doesn't apply to California except in the most wildly optimistic estimates next year. You've given me some insights on keeping the momentum going for 12 months Cori Ann and Trish, much of which involves pacing yourselves I think. My husband and I had a narrow band of possible living places when we first got married, since he hates cold like you and didn't want to move anywhere colder than Nebraska, where I couldn't imagine living hotter than Nebraska (fortunately we're settled here for the foreseeable future). I think you and Bart have some very good insights about the notion that plants do indeed get exhausted in the heat like people and only gradually acclimate. I might have the excuses you so generously offered if I only grew plants suited to Nebraska (whatever demented things those might be), but I can't resist zone pushing and have all kinds of fussy HTs not to mention several teas. The ones that have survived have acclimated to our weather, but I can't say they're all happy about it, and that one's squarely my own fault. Oh, and Totoro, I agree that your bulbs have also acclimated to your climate and should be fine. While I was planting new bulbs, I kept digging up old bulbs that were starting to put up shoots and even leaves and it's never stopped them blooming when the correct season rolls around. And you are so very kind to comment on my writing, folks! Trish and Moses, you nailed it that I do write and communicate for a living - about communication disorders to be precise, so I have to be able to communicate in multiple ways. However, while I love the research I do, the kind of writing I do at work is hardly creative, stuffed into categories of Methods and Results and all (one guess what I was avoiding when I first wrote this thread). Fortunately I also teach, and about working with infants and toddlers no less, so I get to be as creative and goofy as I want to in that respect. That brings me full circle back to the point of this, with a good reason for getting over grumpiness. Cori Ann said we're all facilitators, creators and cultivators, and I really like that sentiment. It's about more than the garden of course, and the students and families and children I've worked with are much more justifiably something to be proud of facilitating than mere plants. So bah, French Lace - who needs you (better not be me, because it has died on me a record 7 times). As Moses said, we're all drawn to roses because we love the challenge, but also because we can bring the patience and persistence we find in roses back out to the real world as well. And here our spouses and friends thought we merely grew barbed wire with scent (little do they know...). Obviously that's one of many reasons we have such a lovely community here on GW roses, including pulling a fellow gardener out of a major grump. Many thanks to all of you. Cynthia P.S. Ouch, summers. I've read about the killer hornets. Hope they can nip that in the bud, I mean kill 'em off. Regular hornets are bad enough. There's a cicada killing hornet here that is huge but doesn't seem aggressive . Last night we got down to only 37 degrees so no damage. I guess the weather forecasters cut themselves some slack ...I take their predictions as inexact and they don't know my micro climate. But they'll predict 33 degrees, then the hourly prediction shows it getting down to 36 at the worst, yet they put out a freeze warning. They have all bases covered. Time to put my plants back out in the sun.

Just now the forecaster said:" It's not often you have 44ÃÂ° and minus 4 degrees in the same day.

I live next door to the Iowa Dept. of Transportation. The snowplows have been coming and going day and night forever. I wonder at the mindset of travelers who go right ahead and drive the interstate in blizzard conditions with no thought as to who they might involve in an accident and the safety of the VOLUNTEERS who come to rescue them. They give no space to the snow plow drivers, expecting the snowplow to move for them. It doesn't make sense to me to be out in the thick of it risking so many lives. Where could they possibly have to go that's important enough to pay with their life or the life of someone else? I will never understand.

It's 5 above here in NEPA as I write this, and Tuesday is supposed to be wicked. Not as wicked as MN, Marita, but bad enough for me.

I normally heat with wood, but Friday I just couldn't seem to get warm, and my fingers were so painful I couldn't do anything useful. I had set out a piece of steak to defrost in the morning, and by evening it hadn't softened a bit, so I guess I didn't imagine how cold the house was. Yesterday I let the stove go out and ran the oil burner all day, but I had to switch back in the evening because without the heat rising from the woodstove my bedroom is uncomfortably cold.

I'm looking at the extended forecast, and don't see any relief in sight until February--and that's temps in the teens and 20's.

Our weather is the same, the temperature is now up to 17.6 from 8 this morning. It is to get warmer and then snow and then temperature to really drop again. It has already snowed this morning once. We can't get out of our drive because of the drifting snow.

We are in the orange alert in our county. It does not bother me I have never gotten cabin fever and do not understand that as I have so much to keep me busy. I am making yeast rolls this day plus some home made Salisbury steaks.

3rd round?? The first one hasn't quit yet! On and on and on. Too long of subarctic temps and more than enough snow. Expecting to see a Polar Bear wander by any day now. Getting up ambition to go shovel, again. I just posted about the horrible accident here Thurs.

This winter has been awful here too, in southern Ohio. The constant snow is bad enough, but the COLD is what is getting to me.

It's pretty bad when 21ÃÂº seems warm! I get cabin fever too and actually look forward to shoveling snow just to get outside and then be able to walk up and down the driveway.

This has been an especially hard winter and if it is an anomaly, then there is about one more month of it left. If this is the new reality and that future winters will be the same, that worries me.

Spring cannot come too soon for me.

It's 6ÃÂº here so a veritable heat wave! But the loose snow is like a blizzard, and it looks horrible out. The plow just went through my driveway, but I'm afraid it's going to fill again very soon.

Huh, I feel positively guilty about our constant sunshine and upper 60's/low 70's temps. (Northern Cal) Of course we're in the beginning of a drought so things are not all rosy, but I sure do love to see the sun. I don't think I could take the constant cold weather and I'm sorry for those of you dealing with it. One dd is in the Bronx but hasn't complained yet; it's so nice for her to use the subway so she doesn't get that darned cabin fever. Growing up in Portland, OR, I remember occasions of snow that were lots of fun at first, but got mighty boring as they dragged on. And that was without the responsibilities of an adult!

I was just imagining how life would have been for the early settlers. No wonder they went mad. I have cabin fever too but I have electricity and entertainment..computer, TV , phone to call people. Imagine life 150 years ago.

I love winter, but even I am sooooo sick of the same old, same old. I only get out to walk the dogs. I'm sick of all the salt dragged in the house, sick of not being able to hang clothes out, sick of the unrelenting cold which never leaves.

Just when the temps reach the low 20's like it is now, in two days it will below zero again with wind chills minus 25!

I wonder if I get that written on a tank top to wear next August if I'll laugh or cry.

Now that I'm retired it's a whole new ballgame. Only have to worry about walking to the barns twice a day. It takes 15 minutes just to get dressed for that walk! But the stress relief from no commute it beyond wonderful!

I guess I'll take my 45F and foggy, gray gloom...

I don't think in my 44 years it has ever been near 0 here. It will on rare occasion get in the low 20's. That happened in 90.. It was about 10 days of 20's , wind and ice. Power loss and all..

We're at 27 but with the Wind Chill feels like 19. Heat wave tomorrow - 38 but then rest of week not above freezing.

Family in MI getting slammed with a lot of lake affect snows. Friend has pics on FB showing her house and you can't even see the highway which runs right in front of her house. Another chum showed what happened after he opened his garage door. Drift about halfway up the door.

Ugh! Ready for warmer weather anytime now.

Chicago was like MN today. It was -1 at 7 am and is now -4, going to -18 overnight. High of -5 on Tuesday. Wind chills are -25 to -45 and they are telling us to stay home. All schools are closed as are some offices.

Cabin fever has set in, you can't walk the dogs it is just too cold for them. Mine is so bored, there is no one to bark at on the street as he sits in the window. And I got the gas bill, it is 3 times last years. I just cried.

Yes, I've been watching Chicago because that's where I'm from. It has been very close to MN in low temps this year. I just got my gas bill today too and it was pretty high. Evidently it will go higher with the recent pipeline explosion that's been in the news.

Lots of dog walkers in my neighborhood even in this weather. So glad I have cats :)

The kids went to school here today. It was in the teens. Just got a message saying school is on a one hour delay tomorrow. Temps are supposed to drop below zero. It's 11 degrees right now.

I had to work the past three days. Saturday was horrible, blizzard like conditions. I drive 25 miles to work. No snow plows out when I left early that morning. I couldn't see landmarks and was driving about 20 mph on the parkway. I ended up going off the wrong exit and had to turn around and get back on it. When I finally made it to the end of the parkway I knew I was going to be late for work and called to let them know. The house super asked how I managed to get where I was because she had gotten a bunch of call ins because the parkway had a truck turned over and it was closed. I must have just missed it. Tractor trailer and a salt truck.

Not looking forward to going back this week. I have three more days to work and then I go on vacation. Hopefully the freezing cold weather will be gone soon.

A homeless man froze to death in Lexington, I think last week. All the shelters are above capacity and people are going out in the city looking for people who are out in the cold.

Not afraid to drive myself in snow but other people terrify me. They drive way to fast for the conditions.
