ice balls on his or her paws?

Other than trying to gently rub them off, what technique do you use?

My little girl came in with so many after our walk down the street (and of course, her running in the snow -- she really loves it).

Put her in the bathtub and melt those ice balls with warm water. My very hairy "Snuffy" would run into the bathroom and jump into the tub, waiting till I got my boots off to come melt those nasty things off her.

We used to use a hair dryer set on low.

i live in seminole co. just north of orlando and here you can not walk your dog even on a leash in a public park. you can walk your dog on a leash, on our extensive multi-county trail system thou. i understand the park policy, there are dog owners who don't poop scoop and no one wants to step in that :-0 we also walk our girls at a trail by our house, we park in a parking lot that is shared w/ a public park and have had a few old ladies actually yell at us from their parked cars that we can not be there w/ our dogs & to get out :-0 and actually at this park you can walk on the path along the park to another set of trails but after getting yelled at once we quit going on that side and now only go across the street. there are even signs all along the path that you can walk w/ a leashed dog thru there. we've been yelled at even thou we cross the street too LOL. our dog parks are not supported w/ public funds, usually only thru fundraising and donated land. we volunteer a couple times a yr to help w/ clean-up and maintenance and donate $$ to help keep them open. they are another perk of living in this beautiful area! ~ liz

We live in the country and Molly walks on our property..She has a big fenced yard but we let her out onto our 5 acres She romps and runs and chases anything and everything from buzzards in the sky to rabbit and deer in our fields...she can only go so far because the property is fenced...on the side where the drive way is, there used to be an old fence and gate. we taught Molly to sit and wait for permission to go any farther...so she never goes out into the street...she has no gate or fence but she knows where she has to stop and she will not go any further...She does the same thing at the house...we have a door from the house that goes to a screened porch...we like to open it to let air flow through, she isn't allowed to come in the house without permission....she is an inside dog now but we taught her this back in the day when we had a lot of mud in the new yard when our house was new. Now she just knows she can't cross certain boundaries without permission...Australian Shepherds are the worlds smartest dogs...ok we think so.

Yesterday morning I walked my dog down to the bayou behind my house, and was surprised to see a very large alligator. It was sort of floating, because you could see it in 3 parts....the head, then the body and then the tail. I was surprised because even though I see alligators once in awhile, I usually just see their heads. I like alligators, and this one was a big one....probably easily 10' or more. A few months ago, someone killed a big alligator (12' long) that was basking on my property. It made me furious. I have no idea who did it...in fact, I didn't even know about it until I walked the dog down there and saw the body. Someone said to me, "Well, it could eat your dogs." I said, "I don't care if it ate all my dogs and half the kids in Brazoria County." An exaggeration, but closer to the truth than I might normally admit. Anyway, I went to get my phone to take a picture of the alligator, and the battery was dead, and by the time I got my camera, it was gone. I went out this morning to see if I could see it, but didn't. I looked for it with a flashlight last night....their eyes shine red...but the flashlight was pretty weak, and I didn't see anything. Anyway, my dogs don't swim in the bayou....the bank is high except in that one spot where the other alligator was basking. I hope the alligator stays safe. I normally would hope to see it again, but with so many idiots that kill things just for the hell of it, I hope it will stay out of sight.

I've trimmed excess long hair from my Lexie's legs and feet. Being a Tibetan Spaniel, she has an undercoat like a duck (or a Husky) and doesn't need that long hair to keep warm. The other puppies don't have such a problem with snowballs so this has pretty well solved our problem. Before doing that, I used to melt them off in a warm bathtub like gazania does.

I let my dog walk around inside till they melt, it doesn't take long. But then again, she gets groomed regularly so the hair on her feet is pretty short.If she comes in with muddy feet, I grab her and rub them off with a warm wet washcloth.

Also be sure to wash off any salt they may have picked up on their paws while out walking. Some people use doggie booties.

I use muttluk dog booties. They are expensive but sometimes you can find them on ebay. It takes the dogs awhile to get used to them, and you a while to get used to putting them on so they don't slip off. But with our high temps being -10 this week, they were a definite necessity.

I wish I could use the booties. I tried them, and with the short legs our puppies have they just wouldn't stay on. Ours weren't Mutluks though, so maybe there would be a difference in how well they stay on? It's hard to imagine, as the design looks very similar.

Not only does our great pyrenees get ice balls he gets ice balls with small rocks from the driveway.

I bring him in from the garage & have a pail of warm water & lots of towels to dunk his paws. This dog hates water so it is a chore to do this as he is over 100 lbs. The smaller dog has short hair & is no problem.

The big one loves this kind of weather as he has 3 coats not just 1

Ah, another reason we'll never have a dog too big to lift into the laundry tub! I use the sprayer hose to get snow and chemicals off his feet and to clean, er, 'underneath'.
