I think you'd be be happier with the Clementines if you put them in the fridge. They'd keep a lot longer. I don't buy the crates unless I find the North African or Spanish imports so I just keep a 3# net bag of "Halos" in the crisper bin. Those have been consistently good this season and I tend to eat a couple at a time just about every day so they go. Once the Clementines disappear, I don't buy oranges again until they reappear in November. So many of the other oranges offered in the stores throughout the year just aren't very good for one reason or another... tough to peel, dry, full of seeds, flavorless.

My sister has a large tree that produces the sweetest juiciest oranges. I was lucky enough to get a big grocery sack full when we were in Louisiana for Christmas. I look forward to them all year. I usually always get a sack of Louisiana satsumas too but my niece forgot my sack at her house and I sure was sad. We had two large satsuma trees in our yard growing up, along with kumquats and grapefruit. I miss all the citrus trees.
When I eat a large orange, I don't peel it I cut it up into small wedges then bite the orange meat off the rind. I find it the easiest way and least wasteful.
I don't generally go by the way they look, I go by a good juicy feel and a very good smell. I don't buy hard oranges. I personally prefer oranges from Louisiana and Texas.

I'm surprised to hear you say you find many seeds in navel oranges, pammyfay, as they are sterile and so should be seedless. I like Honeybells myself.
It's odd to hear you call a kind of orange a "satsuma" raven (I looked it up), here we use the same name to refer to a variety of plum :-)

Our navals are totally seedless and so good.They should be ready for picking within the next few weeks.

I find thick skin Navels easier to peel, and no seeds. Finishing up the last bag, huge and delicious.

Navels should be seedless. I used to work at an organic citrus grove in FL. We found that refrigerated fruit rarely went bad, lasting a very long time, whereas room temp fruit would only last a week or 2. We keep our other produce in the fridge, right? Same with citrus

I prefer FL and TX citrus over CA. Unfortunately, the stores here mostly stock CA or imported citrus.

We also grow a Satsuma Plum here on the West Coast. California oranges haven't been very sweet this year.... usually by Jan/Feb they get sweet. Disappointing. When we do our "south" trip, the oranges near Bakersfield are to die for!. Satsuma oranges are also grown in Ca. Here in our cold Southern Oregon, I keep fruit and some root vegs in our garage...hovering around 40 deg. Not quite a root cellar, but a steady temp and dark.

I currently have Cara Cara oranges, Moro blood oranges, and regular Navel oranges at home right now. My current favorite is the slightly bitter sweetness of the Moro oranges. I've become pretty good at determining which oranges in the store will be good and which will be dry, chewy and flavorless based on the weight and firmness of the oranges. If your navel oranges are full of seeds and hard to peel, I'm tempted to say you grocery store is mislabeling them.

Oh no satsumas are definitely oranges! Similar to a tangerine or manderin but usually larger, sweeter and a little thicker skins. They are very common in South Louisiana. But trying to find good ones outside of the area is difficult.
I have two Louisiana satsuma trees in my atrium, I have them all covered up now to try to keep them from freezing. The graft on the bottom of the trunk must be protected. You can make your own tree and I have done it, you use a wild orange stock tree and cut into it and graft onto it a section of branch from a healthy adult satsuma tree. Wrap up the graft and keep it protected and if all goes well you should have a brand new satsuma tree. We had several in the yards of our family members and most were grafted from one big tree in my grandmother's garden. Those trees made the best tasting satsumas. The teachers at school used to ask us for them, nice way to suck up lol.

I prefer the clementines because they have good flavor, no seeds, are easy to peel and they are an easy snack. My mil keeps sending us juicy oranges for Christmas. I appreciate the gesture, but I really don't care to juice my own oranges. These will set there until they go bad.

Maybe you could give them to a shelter or family with children instead of just letting them rot.

If y'all like clementine and halo oranges try some Louisiana satsumas! They are much easier to peel, it comes off in about two big chunks, they have no seeds, are sweeter, and I think just can't be beat.

the less "dimples" on a orange skin usually indicate thinner skin...I do miss oranges and bananas, sigh...(a no no on my kidney diet)

The juice oranges are between dh and his mother. He won't tell her the truth about them. I don't go there. Yes, it's an expensive waste.

The few times I have seen them, I have bought Temple oranges. Mostly available in the south. DD tells me the Halo tangerines are really sweet and better than the Cuties we bought the last few years. I have never had a Satsumi.

Temples and Minneola tangelos (honeybelles) were always my favorites. I love grapefruit too but I'm not supposed to eat them while I'm taking HRT.

I haven't seen a Temple orange here for ages/years. Those were always my "go tos whenever available.

Cuties were bought out by Halos. And the Halos have been good this season - growing conditions must have been just right.

I look to see where they come from. CA --usually ok UNLESS, they have had a freeze, then don't buy , I have had some from Australia and South Africa that are really good. I don't like the smaller ones--DH did. I would prefer to go to the orchards and get them like I use to in CA. --but it is a LONG drive from ND

Hi FlamingO, I hadn't heard about avoiding grapefruits while on HRT. Do you know the reason for that?

It was on the flier that comes with my pills, it says to avoid grapefruit and its juice as it could interact with it. I sure don't want the pills to stop working so I just won't eat any while I'm on it.

Many many medications are negatively affected by grapefruit juice. Several that I take can not have grapefruit. I suggest that you always check your medication for problems with grapefruit. My doctor has forbidden me to have any type of grapefruit or juice.

For blood cholesterol drugs - Lipitor and other statins- the grapefruit effect isn't negative. The consequence of the mix is a dangerously TOO HIGH concentration of the drug in the body.

I've seen the honeybells on QVC and regretted not ordering this last time. I try to show some restraint ,I want everything I see. Anyway, I received email from White Flower Farm and had second chance to order. I'm looking forward to trying them.

I used to love grapefruit. I would peel them and eat them like an orange, removing the membrane around each section. Sigh. Lipitor. LOL!

I love all those little clementine like oranges and tangerines. But I suck at choosing them. It is so disappointing to buy a whole box (I have to eat it by myself, DH and DD don't eat them) and have them be sour or blah.

They have these ones that are about the size of a large grape, and can be so good (but you have to eat like then of them). The last two boxes I bought sucked rocks.

Kumquats, Dances? They are the size of a grape and meant to be eaten whole. I love those, if they're good ones. Used to get them right off the tree.

I liked to supreme the grapefruits, too, then it's just all sweetness and juice, no bitterness at all.

The Satsumas we buy here (W Washington state) come from Japan and are always excellent. Never seen them from anywhere else.

I usually buy navels because they are seedless. I'm surprised that you have come across some that have seeds, pammyfay. Like someone mentioned, perhaps they were mis-marked?

I love the Halo's and take the mesh bag out of the crate and put them in the fridge. They take up less space that way, and keep a long time when chilled.

I like the navels at Walmart. They are loose, not in a bag and cost about 68 cents each. They are always sweet and good!

I sometimes peel them with a tupperware peeler, but most of the time I cut them into wedges and eat them like Ravencajun, I just pull the orange section off with my teeth. Be sure to wash the orange before cutting open! I cut the orange in half lengthwise, then cut each half, lengthwise, into four pieces. Quick and easy!

Gabriel, you won't regret ordering the honeybells...They have to be the best orange I've ever eaten...They really only have a short season and it's right now, I believe....I usually get to Florida about the end of January and that's close to the end of their producing but I manage to pack up some to send back home....

Gabriell-- did you see the most recent Honeybell airing on QVC? The owner was squeezing, sending juice here, there and A LOT in the glass, too! I don't think the "bib" the host was wearing did a lot of good. LOL!
