| Just had granite installed in green butterfly. I have a few questions:
1. Wanted to do cream cabinets, but several people are telling me that white will look best due to my white stove.
2. If I do white cabinets, wanted to get some input on doing the cabinets under my island a different color. I have a very large island/bar in the middle of the kitchen. Do you thinkg it would be too much green to do them in green? Should I do them in a wood stain? #. Need help on a wall color. Was thinking about a yellow/gold? Thanks so much! |

| Well...you could color match your stove. You could choose a white that goes with your stove even though it doesn't match precisely. You could choose a yellow enough cream that it contrasts with your stove. Or you could use your favorite cream and have it not quite go together and not care. All are valid approaches. Re too much green in the island, it depends on the green. Crayola "green" might be a bit too much. Same with kelly or leaf. A more muted green, like seafoam or sage or any more complex color, even olive, should be fine. Whether you should do it in either green or wood entirely depends on your taste. Contrast islands are definitely of the now. They're what's currently very stylish. Therefore, if you love it do it. If you want to be on trend, do it. If, in 10-15 years, you don't want people to be able to tell when you did your kitchen from the cabinets (the appliances are always a dead giveaway), don't do it. Unless you love it. Sometimes one just waits for the styles to catch up to one's personal taste so one can have one's heart's desire, and it remains one's dear long after the parade. I think you can balance a yellow/gold very nicely with the cream (and that's another reason to go cream). You'll have to be very careful with the green if you decide to do the island in it. One that has a bit of yellow cast, rather than gray cast, will be better. I think you really have a good handle on what you want. Get some samples! That's the best way to see if you like in real life what works in your mind's eye. |

| Could you take a picture of what is existing with the new granite so that we could get a better idea of what the room looks like? I know that many people here have a real gift with photoshop and they might be able to help you cut and paste colors into that space. Is your fridge also white? I ask because sometimes they tend to yellow a bit and a true white might make it look off. Hold up something white next to each of the appliances and see how you feel about it. |

| Thanks so much for the input! That was my first post and your thoughts and pictures were so helpful! (I have pictures, but can't figure out how to attach them. Still working on it.) Here is where I am and my questions: 1. Hubby has painted with different whites/creams and I am leaning toward BM-Cotton Ball. It's not a white/white, but whiter than cream. Still haven't decided on the final color. 2. I am still thinking about the island. Green vs. white. Was thinking about the green only because I am afraid it will be too much white? Was thinking about BM-Dill Weed or BM-Saybrook Sage if I do the green? Thoughts? 3. I like the suggestion of the color for the walls-Golden Straw. It is very pretty. My other choice is BM-Straw. Will they work with the green or white island? 4. Also, should I get knobs for the cabinets that match the faucet? It is a polished nickel. 5. Thinking about painting my chairs that are at the island or I could leave them white. Thoughts? (My fridge is almond. It is 22 years old and will be replaced when it dies, but will keep it until then. DW is black and stove is white. Thanks so much! |

| I am not a matchy matchy person either, but I have to disagree about cream in this case. If it is only 1 appliance that is white, then I don't think I'd do cream anywhere or risk the appliance sticking out like a sore thumb. If they were all white, then you could have a 2 tone thing going on. For the cabs, I'd go with a white, light green or lastly a darker green or black. If your VB has a gray tone in it, that would be a consideration as well. Your current kitchen comes across as dark now, so I'd head lighter, at least for the majority of it. I assume you are keeping the nice wood floors, so with the dark counters, you will have some yin and yang if you go lighter elsewhere. I'd do the walls last and would start trying perky pale yellows (not creamy toned ones) or another shade of green, depending on what you did for your cabs. Again, if there is some gray tone in the counters, you could use a light gray on the walls. If there is a mix of colors and shades, you may want to keep your hardware simple by matching your faucet. I'd worry about that choice absolutely last unless something strikes you along the way. You may get swayed by a pretty light fixture or accessory and need to be flexible about your metal finishes before all is said and done. At the risk of sounding rough, I'd lose the window treatment as soon as possible..... Your new kitchen sounds like it will have a different vibe and the stripes and rouching are tough to pull off. |

| Thanks for the pictures and the follow-ups! They really help. I'm leaning towards doing the island in green and if I don't like it, will paint it white, later. Do either of you know of an alternate green color that might work? Would like to get a sample of the saybrook sage and another one to try. I'll choose the wall color after the island color. And yes, even though I love my 1992 curtains.........It's time for them to go. Same for the wallpaper, too, I guess. (Not from LR-from VA!) Thanks so much! |

| Ok, here is where I am.........I'm going to have the cabinets painted in white. The off whites and creams are just not working with my appliances, it seems. We painted a drawer on the island in the sayebrook sage and it is much lighter than I thought. I really liked the SW Olive that was shown on the reply, yesterday. Went to the SW store and they don't have a color, called Olive. Do you know if it had another name with it? Do you think black would work for the island? Maybe I just need to find the right green. Thanks! |
