Crack in brand new honed granite

Long time reader, first time poster. My husband and I are in the last week of building a new house. We just had honed dusk granite installed last week. There is a huge crack in the island! The distributor said we saw this when we picked it out. I sure don't remember seeing it. The fabricator did agree that there was a crack when he received slab, but that it got worse after installation. The crack was previously sealed at the quarry, so there is no visible gap. The surface is flat. But the resin they used just makes it look worse. There's this big brownish gap in the beautiful charcoal slab. It goes from one edge to the other.

The distributor has washer their hands of us. The fabricator said he did nothing wrong, but will pay for a repair, or replace with one of two slabs he has on hand, but I don't like either.

Anyone have any experience with sealed cracks in their honed granite? Or experience having a large slab repolished on site? I'm devastated and sick to my stomach about having spent all that money and being so disappointed.

Thank goodness your fabricator stepped up to help you. I would grow to like another slab before I kept that cracked slab. Isn't there any part of the other slabs that you like?

It's better that it's a nice big fat crack that you can get some polishable adhesive into; the hairlines are the worst. Maybe stuff some color matched methelmethacrylate in a syringe, overfill, and scrape it flush.

You'll always see it. If you can get it to look like a natural fissure that can't really be felt, I'd say it's good.

Where is your gc/builder/kd who is supposed to be handling and correcting problems for you?

Ridiculous. They are taking advantage of you and should be ashamed. You could always file for replacement costs in small claims court.

When I was looking for a remnant recently I noticed several had "Fissure in left corner" or wherever, written on them in large red letters. Some were practically invisible, I would never have noticed them on my own. Your distributor should have disclosed this to you. Shame on them. I do not know what your legal recourse's are but I would certainly leave a negative review wherever I could. If your fabricator is offering you a free slab I think he must be a bit embarrassed himself for not saying anything up front. If you don't care for the free slabs, I would certainly ask him to try Treb's solution on the crack and see how it looks. Good luck with this.

Now the distributor is a mindreader? Did you see it when you picked it out? It's BS that someone can say what *you* saw. Unless you had a discussion about the crack that you both acknowledge, he's just making things up and attributing them to you.

Are you that in love with the stone? Can you try warming up to the ones your fabricator is offering?

Seems hard to believe that one would see this and then "forget" until after installation.
