You have a beautiful kitchen! It is unique and memorable. The cabinets are gorgeous. Enjoy cooking!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

I love your cabinets! What is the finish on them? Do you expect them to darken or turn more golden over time?

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Beautiful!!!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

thanks! We have white oak floors we did ourselves and used Bona water based finish so it would not yellow. The cabinet maker put some kind of finish on ours that is not supposed to yellow - it is different than oil based poly but I am not sure exactly what it was called. It may darken a tad over time but should not really get dark or yellow. I am not too worried about it.

RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Just beautiful!! I love the cabinets, and the floor!! All of it is perfect!!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

I meant to the right of the Bluestar:) I am still in awe LOL. I wanted to ask how your GC or carpenter did the shelves . I want floating shelves like that in my sunroom ..I am redoing it and want to put my cookbooks on them. Is it the cleat system and if so where did he get the hardware ? Thank you !!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Cool kitchen! I love it. The blend of kitchen items and "nature" is perfect!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Very nice! Love everything, especially the warm natural wood tone with knots, and that BlueStar, the knob color you chose is perfect!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

So beautiful! I adore your backsplash. What material is that? Congratulations!!!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

I'm speechless! Enjoy!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Wow, I love your floating shelves! So different. It's nice that you can forgo the upper cabs and have plenty of storage space. Are your cabs knotty alder by chance?

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Fabulous kitchen! Unique and special and I'll bet you are enjoying the heck out of it!!!

(C--you can always call J for info re: floating shelf hanging)

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Wow--beautiful! Your cabinets are truly stunning.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

As a fellow White Oak cab person, I LOVE YOUR CABS! The whole kitchen, however, it just beautiful. It looks stunning, yet comfortable! I would drink coffee in your kitchen (I will be there tomorrow morning, I like it with cream, no sugar :)

It was also great to see those cabs with light countertops. I love the look of my dark ones, but I don't always like how they show so much (even right after they are wiped down). Seriously thinking about going lighter...and now even more so!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

It looks great, J! Love the floors and the cabinets are so pretty. I know you are enjoying cooking in it! How is the kitchen working when everyone is helping? Congrats on a job well done.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Those are just the kind of cabinets I'm looking to put into my rustic kitchen. Beautiful!!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

What a nice space you have created. It is unique without being weirdly different. The room is so light and airy. The cabinet wood color adds just enough warmth for the space. I'm not an open shelf person but I love the way yours look. Great job!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

That's one beautiful kitchen. I especially love the color of your wood stain.

Enjoy!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

jenny,
So glad you posted your reveal. I love the feeling that I have when I look at it, and with the snow outside, I can almost smell the crispness.

I also love your backsplash, is it painted plywood? It sure is beautiful! The open shelves are fabulous and your work counters are incredible!

You did a great job pulling it all together. TY so much for sharing!!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Wow - Just beautiful! I love your cabinets! Is it considered quartersawn? Again, they're great!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

This is just stunning! I love the shiplap walls. I have a detail question for you: how thick are those open shelves? I'm planning on wood floating shelves, myself, and debating about thickness.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Jenny, that is an awesome kitchen, congratulations! I love the art and your open shelves, plus those cabinets are gorgeous. Really well done!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Thanks for the nice comments. To answer a few questions, The shelves are approx. 12" wide by 3" deep. They are hung on some kind of hidden bracket type thing - I can get more details from my DH. The open shelves make it so easy to grab stuff while cooking and throw it back up there after cleaning. We bought a 1960 home and this is the original kitchen footprint. It is closed off from other spaces so I don't mind having cooking stuff visible. The white oak is not quartersawn, although that would have been a nice addition for sure! :-) The tiles behind the range are a handmade Moroccan tile called Zellij, first read about them on Atticmag.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

What a fresh looking unaffected kitchen! Just love it. Your floating shelves are one of the best I have seen. You must get details from DH and post it all. I love the lightness and the clean lines.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

In my view one of the top ten most wonderful kitchens on GW.

I would love to see more details about the shelves, too. And peek into the pantry, please? And maybe a close up of the cab fronts to see the knobs, and especially the handsome base moulding and the toekick arches. Is that too much and too greedy for details? I hope not.

Such an original, and completely succesful, design. Brava!

Especially love the radiator cover and the (original to the house?) dutch door with its serving shelf. And all the lines, perfectly set-off with the round, ovoid and organic shapes of stuff on shelves and walls and art.

Thank you for this holiday treat!

Liriodendron

Simply gorgeous. I love its originality and all of the exquisite details. Thank you so much for sharing - this is an inspiration!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Sigh, this is so incredibly lovely. Totally magazine-worthy without the obvious pretense or faux glamour of some of those showplace kitchens you see in magainzes. Thanks for posting the photos for all of us to admire!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Beautiful, I especially love the cabs, open shelves and counters. Perfect kit to work in, enjoy!

 o

I love this kitchen. You should upload it to Houzz.com. Very inspiring.
Enjoy!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

I think this proves that oak CAN be gorgeous.

I love this for so many reasons:
1) it uses wood in its natural state and let's the beauty of that wood shine through in an understated way.
2) it has black appliances for contrast with the medium to light tones of the white oak. I love that because it shows that this is a home kitchen, not a cooking show set or a restaurant (I have SS, wish I'd been able to swing the up charge to white or black).
3) it isn't identifiable as a kitchen from the 90's or 80's or any specific time frame.

The marble and open shelving are beautiful and keep this at the level of "aspirational" kitchen for me, at least. With the pet fur that flies around here during shedding season and DH's propensity for leaving greasy spoons or drippy bottles of olive oil around, those 2 elements would not work for me. But that doesn't mean I don't love them ;)

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Stunning, I love everything in this kitchen.
Enjoy.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Unique & lovely! I really like how you've incorporated your beautiful artwork into your kitchen. Awesome cabinets. The room is fresh, crisp, relaxing & charming. Enjoy your new space!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Love the horizontal boards! The kitchen has such a clean fresh look and the white oak is a color wood that I am so attracted to. I am a huge fan of the floating shelves and you did such a nice job with this!! Beautiful :)

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Thanks all for the nice feedback. A few other pics since you asked Lirio! DH corrected me that yes some of the oak is quartersawn. The baseboard hot water heat is original to the house and those radiator covers have been something I've had to come to terms with decor-wise! We have been slowly replacing them with wood covers throughout the house - the original covers were painted metal.
I used Porous Plus 511 on the marble and truly it doesn't stain. I've discovered puddles of oil and wine that have been left over night without any staining. It does etch but with a honed finish and cloudy color you can't really see it. I do not baby it at.all. The shelves work out pretty well as its all stuff I use regularly and clean so the dust doesn't get a chance to get too settled.
Knobs - they are small, 1" but I have no problems opening the drawers.

I agree it looks like the outdoors came indoors. So many beautiful elements with the light cabinets and counters, and the wall planks and shelving.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

It's a wonderful kitchen...but those floors!!! They're beautiful :)

Everything works so well together from the cabinets and marble to the appliances and the open shelves. They look great with the walls. Thanks for sharing...now I know what style of floor I'd like to get for my current kitchen.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Very pretty kitchen - it's unlike any other I've seen on GW. You've done a great job making it unique and inviting. The wood is gorgeous and a great rejoinder to people who think oak is dated.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Really gorgeous. I love the warmth; the floor, the cabinets, everything is just great.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Different and beautiful! Thank you for sharing.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Thanks for the info on the shelves! Those close-ups really show the beauty of the wood. All around just lovely.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

gorgeous!! I normally do not like rustic, but the open shelves, clean lines, and light colors really speak to me. well done!!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

What a stunner kitchen! And I don't usually even like oak cabs, but these are gorgeous! Well done, everywhere I look! Especially love your custom hood and backsplash.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

What a beautiful, fun, kitchen. Rustic, yes, but also simple, and light-filled, and peaceful. When I hear "rustic", I think of a room that's busy with too much wood. This kitchen makes the most of the beautiful natural wood, yet it's clean and elegant.

My kids are probably thankful we don't live in that gorgeous home, because if we did, I'd be dancing around that airy, natural kitchen all day, like some kind of crazed forest nymph.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

That is one of my favorite kitchens! I love everything about it. Great job!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

That is just a fabulous kitchen! I love the walls, they are so wonderful. The cabinets are also just gorgeous as well. What a great kitchen you've created. You will enjoy that for years and years.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

It's beautiful!

Thanks for sharing some additional details on how the open shelving was done. I would love some more close-ups of the shelving and underside, if you have time.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Really lovely! I especially like the shiplap boards, and the tiles behind the range. Wonderful combination of materials. Congratulations!

junicb - if you are still reading, I took some photos of the shelves and their underside with light tape, will try to post it tomorrow.

I am still reading! No rush - whenever you have time...

 o

Just love your kitchen! Fantastic job! Enjoy it in good health!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Jenny - any update on the photos of the underside of the shelves?

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Hi Junicb - here is a photo of the lights underneath the shelves. They are LED strip lights, you just cut and stick them up there, and then the end is hardwired into the wall.

RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Jenny - I don't know how I missed your response!

Thanks for the update. By any chance, do you know the brand and vendor for your tape lighting? We are having a hard time finding the right style to go with our open shelving.

Is it low-voltage? Where is the driver/transformer hidden?

Thanks!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Junicb
The brand of tape lighting is Hafele led lighting. Yes low-voltage, and the transfomer is in the basement I think DH said. The wires go into the walls and down to the basement. Let me know if there are any other questions I can help with. We ordered some of the stuff through our cabinet company (they had a lighting specialist) and then some of it my DH ordered on his own (he is very handy!). Let me know if there are any other questions I can help with. I am very happy with it - its very bright and has a nice natural bright tone too it - not too blue.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Thanks again, Jenny! Your kitchen is beautiful!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Jenny-This is one of the most interesting kitchens I've seen on here in a long time. I love the way you have combined the different elements and materials. I'm a little late in commenting, but thanks for sharing.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

What a beautiful and very unique kitchen!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Your kitchen is lovely. So warm. Congratulations!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

I have no idea why I keep losing this thread right when I mean to comment on it.

You have done a truly terrific and original job. Your kitchen has broad appeal as a softly contemporary space and yet you have avoided all of the cliches of overdone contemporary kitchens. Love the way the brass on the BS came out--just the right note.

Congratulations!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Wonderful cabinets. The inset doors are so well done and the oak is beautiful. The wood and floors give it such a naturalistic, calm, warm feel. Congradulations. Enjoy.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Thanks for the nice words all! Cooking in it has been so much fun.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Hi Jenny, we are doing planked walls and thick shelves. Do you know the color of your walls? And also, what size are the planks? 6"?
Also, we're the walls painted before they put wood on?

Thanks for the detailed info on the shelves. We are DIYing and they are a debate in our house. DH says they need corbels, I can show him yours and say "not so much"!
Love your cabinets, is your hood DIY or did your cabinet maker construct it?
I love the wood on it, it's gorgeous!

Don't know how I missed this reveal thread, but still have a picture of your kitchen!
Oh, one more thing, are you loving your marble?

Thanks so much

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

I fall for the painted cabinets every.single.time having sworn off bare wood, and let me just tell you that your kitchen has me swooning. Oh my! It's gorgeous! Well done!!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Hi Susie, to answer some of your questions - the planks are about 5 1/4" wide, with a little gap inbetween. They were put in on top of the drywall, then painted in once they were in place. Unfortunately the longest shelves are starting to pitch forward just a bit. Both my husband (who is handy) and our contractor think they will not come off the wall, BUT we all decided we'd feel better to put brackets in. I have some really heavy stuff I'd like to put up there, like a big le creuset dutch oven etc. and I'd feel better with the brackets. I picked out some metal ones and I will paint them white to blend in with the wall.

as for wall color, its either Sherwin Williams Dover white, or just plain white, I don't remember.

And yes, I still love the marble. It does etch but doesn't stain at all once properly sealed. I did do a re-seal on it after about 6 months.

Good luck with your kitchen! Thanks for the kind words.

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

wow, what a beautiful and unique kitchen!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Is there a lot of dusting involved with this type of wall? I LOVE them, and your entire kitchen!

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

OH WOW! Really gorgeous-I love the light wood and white paired together. :)

 o
RE: Finished white oak / rustic kitchen (full pics)

Thanks! No there is no dust issue with the wall. The kitchen was a complete gut, and we installed the wood (yellow-poplar) boards on top of new drywall, then painted it. So no more dust than you'd usually get.
