We had switchplate covers made by someone on the web (it was years ago; I don't still have their contact info) in wood to match the cabinets. They really weren't expensive.

The socket covers, which I'd rather have disappear, were cheap Home Depot white metal ones faux-painted to match the stone backsplash. It wasn't too hard and sure was cheap!

Oh, my gosh, remodelfla! That site is full of outstanding plates!! Here's the one Grandma would definitely spend $25 on for her darling grandchild.

I have a zillion outlets. I plan on closing up a few which I do not use. Uhh, what do you mean "closing up"? To do this and remain up to code will likely be expensive. (You cannot just cover over a junction box that has live wiring in it.) You also need to have your outlets positioned such that every point of the countertop is within 24" of an outlet.

I have ordered switch plates from a company called Kyle Designs...not sure they'll have what you're looking for, but worth a try.

If you check HD and Lowe's, there's a line by Mulberry that are "wrinkled".
They're paintable and don't chip.
Any hard plastic or metal will eventually wear off, but these have texture, so although I can't say it won't happen, I have had those different places for over 10 years and they haven't.

A question about the custom switchplate covers---are the tiles cut away around the area where the switchplates go, or are the switchplates installed on top of the tiles in the backsplash?

The tiles line up with the edges of the outlet box. You have to allow room for the actual outlet plug holes to recess. The switchplate covers any voids in tile. HTH.

Thanks--I figured it must be that way, but I reallly didn't know for sure. If the switchplates went over the tile, it seems that they wouldn't lay flat over the tile and also the box would be too recessed behind the cover.

You would think that some smart tile manufacturers would realize if they made switchplate covers to match their tile (or perhaps just their more popular tiles) they would be big sellers. Or maybe some have, and I just don't know about them yet.
