Alternatives to wicker baskets for a more contemporary kitchen?

Posted by hydrangea_2008 (My Page) on

My new kitchen is to have a contemporary-arts and crafts mix in style. I am planning a base cabinet for storing vegetables like potatoes/onions,etc.
Is there any alternative to wicker baskets? Nothing wrong with wicker baskets but it is kind of wrong for the look I'm going for.
Can anybody share any pictures of any other kinds of pull outs they put together (metal perhaps) and details on where they got it?
I have to have this storage. I keep a lot of vegetables at room temperature.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm assuming you're meaning open storage cabinets rather than bins for regular cabinet interiors. Galvanized or stainless metal bins with labels on them sitting on shelves would look more contemporary, but they'll be difficult to access with the weight of vegetables in them unless you have a cabinet maker than can create drawer slides for them to slot into making them be the drawer box in an open cabinet. Regular drawers with metal or plastic bin inserts would be more functional, although they'd not have the "cool" factor.

I've seen stainless steel bins used for this purpose. Try the Container Store or search the internet for industrial metal bins. The problem, as Live Wire states, would be pulling them out. Perhaps you could attach felt to the bottom.

Another option might be wire baskets on slide out tracks. I think that would look really cool. I think Rev a Shelf has something like that. The Container Store has this, too.

I'd like to see photos of possible solutions myself, so hopefully someone will post some.

RevAShelf sure has one. I am actually looking for contemporary wire baskets on slide out racks. I am finding some in the UK that look really nice - but not in the US. There are a few 'white' metal baskets too - by Haefle - but it did not suit my needs.

I used galvanized bins in my laundry room for clean laundry (one bin per family member) for about 3 months.

They looked cool, but they scratched the cabinets badly when I pulled them in and out, and they were way too heavy. They also had sharp corners and sometimes we cut ourselves on them.

After that ringing endorsement, if you're interested here is the link. $13 each at Lowes:

I'll show you a pic of my wicker baskets, which is what I think you mean but is obviously not the look you want:

My cab co, Showplace, also made wire baskets that were similarly set up to the wicker. There was a door that hid the wire baskets, but I suppose it could be removed. Does that help?

Straight sided wooden or bamboo boxes with cork or felt shelf liner stuck to the bottom so they don't scratch. You can get them at craft stores, Williams Sonoma, Bed Bath & Beyond etc. Paint them or leave them plain.

I also have some old ones on wheels (casters) that slide under benches and cabinets. Kick 'em, not the dog.

I don't have pics, but I have seen them in some catalogs They are sometimes billed as factory cast-offs and have that kind of machine-age modern feel, if that's what you like.

Try things like old wooden apple, selzer or milk crates, or build a box from scrap wood and/or metal (easyeasyeasy, don't be frightened!). Again, there are MANY kinds of modern, so it depends on what you like.

They can be very cheap too, which is nice. Or the antique ones can be expensive!

You could get some clear lucite ones with handles cut into the sides. Or like the link....

Here is a link that might be useful: Lucite bin

Maybe wire mesh or the small hex wire in a tall drawer front married to a pull out shelf? You could sit any kind of container on the pull out.

I don't have these but think you'd get pullouts with a narrow front, and order glass prep "doors" for the drawer fronts. Rout down the pull out fronts where they would show through the "glass."

Same kind of idea using actual drawers, venting the cabinet through the cabinet floor in front of the toe kick?
