Or, for a less expensive alternative, Wallies might work. (Wallies are those stick-on decorations you often see used in children's rooms.) They've got four 9"x12" panels for under $20.

I'm planning to try it, although it'll be a month or two before that project hits the top of my list. I'll try to remember to give feedback on if it works or just looks like cheap shelf liner.

I wouldn't do anything that involves chalk, since it can make a mess on the floor and is somewhat abrasive. A dry erase board would be better IMO.

I love the look of a chalkboard refrigerator -- saw one on a Sub-Zero in the November issue of Sunset magazine BTW, and I am seriously thinking about doing something like this for my pantry door (we're sticking with a standard depth refrigerator, so I don't think it's an option for the fridge). That said, my mom -- a retired high school teacher -- highly recommended a white board instead because the chalk is so messy and drying. My problem with the white board is that my 3 year old, and eventually my 7 month old, will think that any old marker or pen will be fine and it will be ruined fairly quickly, while a blackboard is much less likely to be the victim of the wrong implement. Well, that and the chalkboards (particularly blackboards) just look really cool.
