we have three furnaces and three air conditioners and a 1200 cfm vent-a-hood in the kitchen. our kitchen designer is smartly suggesting we look into obtaining make-up air for when we turn the hood on high. the hvac guy says we need to spend $10,000 for a 4th unit just for this make-up air. we cannot afford another unit at this price, but are unsure what other options we have for this. opening the window is a possibility, but i don't want to forget to do that and have an issue. thanks

Not near the square footage and we are also opening a window by the stove if necessary. Rarely do we anything but low on our 1,000 CFM blower.

Around here you can vent up to 350 cubic feet per minute (CFM) before you need make up air. If your vent will move more air than 350 cfm (even if you never intend to use the higher capacity), the mechanical code in your area will probably require make up air, ordinarily supplied through an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) connected to your range vent with a switch that automatically turns it on when the vent is in use. Even if your code does not require it, it is still a very good idea. This is not difficult to do, but it should have been planned for all along.
