Not weird at all. We had that arrangement for 37 years, no problem at all.

We are also not going to have a backsplash other than a 5 inch granite strip and the stainless behind the range.

We may put one in at a later date but we'll see.

We have soapstone counters without a backsplash. No problems after 6 years.

Is a backsplash really necessary? Yes. It protects your walls, cabinets, floors and subfloor. That 4" piece of soapstone is a backsplash. You don't need 4"- you'd be fine with 2"- but you really should extend it to cover every wall/counter interface.
