This was actually a mistake. I purchased the part that makes the microwave built-in, but it was too big for my cabinet (mistake made by the guy who ordered the cabinets). This was toward the end of the whole remodeling process, the cabinets were installed, the counters were installed, and we were only a few weeks from being able to move back into our house. I let it go. The problem is that my cabinets are cherry and the place where the microwave went was not finished inside with cherry. My G.C. put some trim around the opening so that it didn't look like so raw. I'm sensitive to it, but no one has ever seemed to notice.

This is a pic of a mwave in uppers... not my kitchen but a colleagues.

Note the uppers are not deep enough so the base was brought out.

I much prefer the look of sally123's cab as it is not protruding out.

I wanted adjustable shelves above ours so that we would have greater options in the future--i.e. if I want to replace it with some other type of counter top oven.

The whole cabinet was made deeper than a typical upper.

sally123... fwiw, i really like how yours look. :)

In researching, I found a MW by GE model PEM31 that is 12"D, 11" high, 24" wide. The interior is quite large. With careful placement of the outlet, it will work on a shelf that is standard cabinet deep. An optional hanging kit is also available. My cabinets are nearly 16" deep when you add the full overlay door. It's not installed yet so no photo. Might this MW be an option for you, tncraft?

Speaking of outlets, we put our outlet in the cabinet above, so the cord or plug space wasn't an issue, and so we can unplug it before pulling it out, if we ever need to lift it down... No stopping with it held in the air to unplug. Our upper is also deeper for the big microwave we need in our house.

Here's mine. The shelf protrudes a little, but it has never bothered me. FWIW -- Amy

Here is ours. We had the cabinets built 15" deep on that wall to accommodate the depth.
