Recessed "wet area" on kitchen sink counter, is it a good idea?

Hi there,
In Brazil it is usual to have a recessed wet area for the kitchen sink, so that water from dish washing a food preparation don't go to the floor.

I never seem that used anywhere but here. I find that quite ugly (the lack of continuity of the counter and trouble of scrubing the inside corners to prevent dirt from collecting and mildew.

Every counter maker in Brazil seems to think that I'm crazy and my kitchen will be soaked wet if I don't have a wet area, how has the rest of the world lived with it? If you don't have that recessed area, do your kitchen floor get unusually wet?
