water filtration

we have horrible tasting water - it's hard and it just tastes gross

we've currently got a single filtered tap using a system through culligan. i will be honest and say i have no idea what type of system it is. they come and change the filter once a year.

during this remodel, we're adding additional sinks as well as a pot filler and i want filtered water accessible at least five locations.

i'm trying to figure out our best option in terms of space and cost efficiency. our plumber told us to look into ametek whole house system that apparently filters off the mainline. has anyone used this or something like this? according to him it also eliminates the need for a softener, which we also currently have.

i also have a call into culligan to see if they could give me some options.

my ideal scenario is not have tanks under each sink. i would like one central source that has enough filtered water to simply meet the needs of the five locations where I know i want filtered water. but i don't necessarily need my water filtered to do laundry, which i think is what the ametek would supposedly do - filter my whole house.

confused and would love any feedback here.

I would go with a whole house system including the laundry. With hard water your detergent doesn't clean as well as it should. You will notice a difference even with your laundry if you change it over to whole house filtration. I wish I could afford such a thing. Luckily we don't have hard water but even so.. in the future I want to have something like this installed.

Not sure of brands to use but I am sure if you do your research, you will find something that suits your needs.

My first question is do you really want the whole house filtered? We have very hard water and the whole house uses softened water. We use RO water for drinking and cooking purposes. If the water is softened, I am not sure what the need is for the laundry and shower water to be filtered. I could see maybe the kitchen sinks all using RO water.

I will say, having the whole house softened is essential to me. When we run out of water softener, I see the difference in my hair and my skin gets itchy. Our hardness runs about 25 grains in the winter and about 37 in the summer.
