Marmoleum choice update

First thanks to all for in put on the other thread. I did get larger samples and could see that the Donkey Island was too washed out and a couple others fought with the counters or were way too light or plain. The Smokey Quartz had absolutely perfect colors and was about as light as what I have now. But a teensy bit minty and as someone said old school, and "not in a good way". I could see it looking institutional and even dingy after a while.

I contemplated my Sweeby test (calm, serene, etc) and applied the spilled-cofee, dog-print, backyard-bits test. Truth, I realize I don't want to maintain another light colored floor if I have other options.

The clear winner at hiding everything is Shitake.

A lot going on there but it reads pretty neutral, like a wood floor would. And since it is darker and I love my light kitchen, I will lighten the walls with EK's Khaki (on the chip and the folder). You can see the current darker green gray color to the right in the first photo. The Khaki is more warm and tan than in the first photo - notice that the Corian is also grayer/cooler in foreground than it is to the right in that pix. Second pic color is closer.

I have been wanting to use the EK Khaki paint somewhere and love how it shifts color from tan to grey to khaki even to brown (and once before a snow storm briefly to a startling sky blue. Cool.) It is most often a soft khaki color, but sometimes it changes like in the pix below.

This house has lots of angles and great light - even the builder's ceiling white changes color. Some EK paints like Khaki are especially chamelean-like here.

Soooo, big changes going to a darker floor and lighter walls. Change is good though, hey?

You like? Anybody screaming "No! Don't do THAT."

Congratulations on your decision. I like and understand about the flooring looking in the same warmth and idea as wood. I was hoping for that when I chose our Marmoleum, but we were doing Click and there was nothing close. I happen to love your current wall color, so, for myself, wouldn't change it, believing your counters add a lot of light to your combination, but it's your kitchen, and if you love the Khaki, I love it for you. :-)

I'm with rhome on this. Great choice!

I think your new choice of floor and paint color look great with your cabs and countertop.

it looks somewhat like my sister's tile. hers doesn't seem to darken her room a lot.

my only concern would be if those color changes are also texture and stuff will get stuck in the lower parts of it.
if it's smooth, great! I'm being real careful to get a smooth flooring so i don't end up on my hands and knees with a scrub brush to clean out those areas.

this pic is off a bit in color. the walls look a bit blue -
they aren't. they're navajo white.

Awww, I was hoping you'd be brave and choose the Chinese Tiger or whatever the wild red one was called, lol. I think it is very pretty what you've chosen. Congrats. Feels great to make the just right final decision, doesn't it? Of course, post pics, but of course you will.

Lisa, I almost did go with Asian Tiger until someone here gave me a link to pictures of a kitchen installation. Just too orange in a field. Though there is a brand new 'designer' Marmleum series that have some colors that make Asian Tiger look like a tame kitty! Wow.

Rhome, I will contemplate the paint color more. I do like my current color a whole lot. But I also am surprised how much I am liking subtler lighter shades in my LR and DR. Guess I tend to have a heavy hand with color - sometimes less is better. I likely won't paint until after the floor is in so I'll see what the Marmo'd room is like with the current color. And if I still crave color shifting but want depth, EK's Edgewood Green is pretty close to what I have now, a little less milky and more brownish.

Floor first, paint later. Feels good to have the floor decided.

Desertsteph, Marmoleum is a flat sheet product. Like a vinyl but very sturdy and organic. No grid, no grout, no ridges, no problem.

I like the Marmoleum and Kakai with your dark cabinets and light countertops. It is going to be beautiful.

Congratulations!!! Great choice. It has a lot of the verve of the orange without being so one dimensional. I only have an objection to the name. That is not what shitake's look like!!!!!!!!! I am going to call it Shell in Sand. Much better than moldy fungus.

LOVE the color!! I haven't seen that before. It looks perfect!

And I LOVE the paint too! Go for it! I hope you'll do the ceiling too.

So glad it's all coming together.

Love your floor choice. Very warm, almost terra cotta look. Glad you stayed away from the dull old vinyl floor colors.

After the floor is down, be sure to test the paint to make sure it doesn't go too pink.

Thanks for sharing your choice with us.

glad to hear it is smooth! so much easier to clean.

RE: Marmoleum choice update

Marmoleum was almost our choice--we ended up with cork--but I love the look of this! It will be fun to read your future posts about how bullet-proof it is, and easy on the legs. The color is great with your other items. Way to go!

RE: Marmoleum choice update

Good job, celt. I think it will look great. Is it in yet? Show us some pics, pretty please.

I'm having trouble figuring out paint colors and backsplash, as I have a lot of neutral going on. Guess I need to start a new topic.

I was s-l-o-w-l-y scrolling down the page, hoping it was NOT the Asian Tiger thing!!!! LOL
Yea!! As for your choice, I think it is great. It is warm, but not boring. It is colorful but not scary (like the tiger!)
Can't wait to see it all put together with your new wall color!

I agree with plllog about the name.
Love the subtle change in the khaki color.

Did you get click or sheet? Installed yet? Seriously considering marmoleum, but worried about seams. Will prob make a decision Thanksgiving weekend when mom comes to town.

Little snag with DH having second thoughts about the bamboo, but he is now on board. Wasn't going to order the Shitake if I was back at square one.

Flooring guys want to install bamboo before Marmoleum and bamboo needs to acclimate in place before install. blah, blah, blah, I have 22 coming for Thanksgiving here, then going to see my family out east, then have to pack up and clear out my office for the bamboo install and set up temporary office in the basement (I work out of my home).

Long story upshot - install set now for Dec 7. I am painting kitchen now in the EK Khaki while I wait. Looks good!

Install will be sheet (3 seams - big space) and I am opting for the adhesive rather then the welded seams.
