Question on Costa Esmeralda Granite?

Posted by pbear_2007 (My Page) on

For those of you who have Costa Esmeralda countertops, would you feel comfortable saying approximately what the cost was? I really love it, but I know it's an exotic and will be very expensive.

Before I get my heart set on it, just wondered what other GW'ers have paid for it.

Also, could you say where you are located as well?

Thanks,

Pbear

I'm in the Bay Area. We had originally decided on aslab that was $29.50/sq ft (without fabrication). But the fabricator actually had a large "remnant" that would work for us (althouh we did have to settle on one seam). That came out to something more like $15/sq ft!

Wow....skoo, that's fantastic! I would settle on a seam for that price too.

Thanks,

pbear, I looked through my notes, and the other yard that had Costa that we considered was $24/sq ft. Also in the Bay area. Hope that helps.

skoo,

That seems quite low, $24/sq. ft. I am on the east coast unfortunately. I thought that CE was considered an exotic stone and would be a lot more than that. How long ago did you buy your slab? Just curious. I was expecting something along the lines of $60-100/sq. ft. Maybe I have my units mixed up. It's usually priced by the sq. ft., right?

I had thought Costa Esmeralda was between $120 - $200 a sq. ft. Perhaps I'm way off base.

RE: Question on Costa Esmeralda Granite?

The prices skoo is giving you is just for the slab, without fabrication or installation. That seems to be the way we do it here on the west coast. I bought my slabs (you have to buy the whole slab) and they sent them to the fabricator. The fabrication/installation was separate, directly to the fabricator.

RE: Question on Costa Esmeralda Granite?

Yes, all those costs are for slab only, no fabrication. If I factor in fabrication, it's another ~$48/sq ft on top of the slab.

Thanks julie and skoo....that makes sense now.

We asked for estimates for 2 granites: Costa Esmeralda and Jade Green. The Costa Esmeralda was almost twice as expensive as the Jade Green. We decided to go with the Jade Green. The Costa Esmeralda is beautiful but a budget-buster!

Thanks westchestermom....I'm still waiting on a quote from my KD, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be out of my price range as well.

pbear_2007:

CS is not the least expensive Stone on the market - but it's not the most
expensive either - just remember that CS HAS FISSURES - LOTS of FISSURES -
they can open up - if they do - your fabricator will most likely glue them back
together and rod the piece - and resurface it IF the fissures open up enough.

Other stone that do not have fissure do not behave this way, and this is why CS
costs more to quarry, finish, ship, fabricate and install...... it's fine once it gets
installed in your home - but just getting it there takes a bit more effort than
other stones that do NOT have the fissure issues that we see in CS.....

BTW - as I understand it - most CS comes from Iran - if that matters to you
or not - just thought that I'd throw that out there just in case you wanted to inpress
someone at a cocktail party or whatever...... ;-)

Kevin,

Thanks for the information on CE. I did not realize that about the fissures. I wondered why it is so expensive. That explains a lot.

By the way, what do you mean by "rod the piece".?
