How about grey, celery, or a grey blue? You could do a light wash so you get the feel you want (white or cream).

Only speaking for myself, I feel embarrassed to keep posting my island over and over when this questions gets asked. I think that if you go to google and type in "island gardeweb" select images you will see hundreds pop up. Far faster to see LOTS of kitchens! CJC

Here is a pic of my island:

I have dark alder cabinets around the perimeter counters and also the front/side of my island. The back of the island that faces out towards the great room is tiled in white tumbled marble.

I have a mix of two paint and one stain in the kitchen and two counter top materials. Add another to paint and counter if you count the coffee station between kitchen/laundry. We've been in six years and the island is still my favorite thing about the kitchen/house.
