(1) much more clean look.
(2) how many time people clean between the range and the cabinets? because no matter precise can be the countertop still have a space.
(3) if you brake 1 appliance you don't have to buy the cooktop or vice-versa.

If you want a gas cooktop and electric oven, you could just get a dual fuel range.

For me, the small benefits Giacomo mentioned are outweighed by the big negative I found when planning my new kitchen: an oven placed under counter is very low to the ground. They are even lower than the oven in any range I've used. I nixed this oven placement for that reason.

Breezy is right. The main advantage to splitting the components is two-fold.

One - You can have a larger/wider range (e.g. six burner vs. 4 burner) without losing under counter space to wide oven placement. Two different power types. Gas burners v. electric oven is a great combo. (There are mfrs. that make this combo in a single unit) Under a range top is a nice place to have a refrigerated drawer or cooking supplies (especially large pots, use large drawers, not cupboards.)

Two - It gives you the option of having the oven(s) in a different spot (near a baking work area) AND having it at a more convenient height.

All the above, plus both units sit within a standard counter depth, so great for tighter spaces. All the benefits mentioned of flexibility of size and possibility of separate placement, plus you don't have to stand in front of a hot oven to cook (I traded off that pleasure for cookpot and utensil storage).

Darn. There's another not mentioned that I can't think of. In lieu of that, I'll just underline--SO easy to keep clean.

I like the look of a proper range, and if you don't get the benefit of wall ovens at convenient height, then why not one of the beautiful ranges that are available?
