kitchen island

I'm remodeling my kitchen due to a fire. I have a large island being put in. it's starts out 24" W x 60L" and then expands to a large island being 48" x 68" at the far end, kind of like a large rectangle at that end with the corners angled off. I'm going to have two bar stools on the long end, the 68" wide, and then one on each of the short ends which are 48". There will be no cabinets under the counter from the 60" to the 108" , the end of the island. So that's a 48" x 68" bar/island/eating area. How and what should support this large end of the island and still accommodate the benches and peoples legs?

Draw it out . But you'll probably need steel. Lots of custom steel.

I can't picture it from your description, but assuming that you're gonna need some steel, I'll share my experience. I knew that I needed steel reinforcement for my island, and I tried to pay someone to do it for me, but ended up doing it myself because I wasn't satisfied with my fabricator/installer's proposals and the other 4 or so folks that I engaged weren't interested in the job.

Do you have any friends that are mechanical or structural engineers? I ask because you do need to do some math using span tables and whatnot to get this right. Otherwise you're very likely to over or under design it.
