Changing out cabinet doors and painting frames to match?

I would like to update the look of our cabinets. They're oak which I just really dislike. I also prefer a raised panel door style compared to the recess panel doors that we have.

We recently got a quote from someone who would refinish the cabinets to minimize the grainy look of the oak, and add picture frame molding to the center to give the cabinets a nicer look.

However, I was on a DIY cabinet refacing website and saw an option of replacing the doors and painting the frames to match. We're going with a medium to darker toned maple, so for cases like that the website recommended doing the full overlay style.

Has anyone done this with a color other than white? I wasn't sure how it would look. While the frames would not be noticeable when the doors are closed, they would lack the dimension of the maple doors we want. Not sure how it would look.

Anyone done this, and if so, can you post pics? Thanks!
