Following this post because I am also planning to purchase one in the near future.

Maple end grain is at the top of the list. End grain is nice to your sharpened knifes since the blade goes between the fibers instead of cutting against them.

Edge grain is fine and usually much less expensive as it's easier to make.

Amazon, Wayfair and Bed, Bath & Beyond (coupon!) is where I'd start looking.

Mine is from Ikea, but I haven't seen them lately. It's 14x19 end grain and cost around $25-30. It's probably my most used kitchen item!

I have one from Overstock but I've also seen them at places like Home Goods. Mine was about $80 as I recall and end grain (16x18 or something similar) There's no lip and it's about 2 inches thick so it never leaves the counter. Keep in mind that if you're fastidious or have a countertop that needs maintenance this is not the best options as i find crumbs etc stuck around the board and it's hard to clean around it since it's so heavy to lift) However I don't care as much and use it multiple times a day. I do oil it with Boos oil once a month or so.
