Any marble, limestone or travertine will etch. Most will stain, with the exception of maybe serpentines.

Thank you very much kevdp4! I figured the word 'marble' meant it wasn't going to be sturdy, but I just had to check.

And the etches all show white, which shows up MUCH worse on darker marbles.

I tested many marble samples last remodel and while they all etched, they were also pretty stain resistant. I ended up with a grey one (Bardiglio?) that didn't stain. (You can't be afraid to use cleaning products on it, though). It was honed so etching wasn't that obvious--and no, etching really isn't that white. :) However, the marble I got also had more bloppy patterning than yours which won't hide as much.

Get a sample of any material to test for staining and etching. Cuz that is sure pretty.

Thank you both very much! I took a picture of another one that I also liked. It is busier and might be more camouflage. It comes leathered, which I like. It wasn't my favorite of the day, but was one of my lower cost favorites.

And where do I get a sample? I was at a stone yard and I have to be honest, I have never been treated more rudely in my life. I can't imagine being able to get a sample from them. The fabricator that I think I have settled on doesn't keep much unusual stuff in stock.

Etches will always be lighter than the stone color, if it's darker it is a stain.
